80-Year-Old Man Survives Getting Thrown off Cliff by Bear He Head-butted.

Yusuf Alchagirov is lucky to be alive after a hungry bear attacked the octogenarian in the southern Russian region of Kabardino-Balkaria, The Guardian reported.

Alchagirov was herding sheep in a raspberry field when confronted with the irate, hungry bear. When the beast picked him off the ground, the agile 80-year-old made the decision to fight back and began kicking and head-butting the animal.  The enraged bear then dropped Alchagirov before sending him flying off a cliff, U.K. Metro reported.

Miraculously Alchagirov lived to tell the tale.  When he failed to return from sheep-herding, relatives and neighbors began to search for him.  He woke up in hospital seven hours later with bruises, bite wounds and four broken ribs.

The brave Russian is convinced that it was his decision to fight back, rather than flee, that ultimately ensured his survival:

"I got off easy. It would have killed me if I'd chickened out," Alchagirov said.

It seems Alchagirov made the right decision.  Russian experts say bears only attack humans when they are hungry or provoked and that if a bear attacks, it is recommended to fight back with anything that is available to you, Business Insider reported.

As for Alchagirov’s attacker, locals have refrained from tracking down the bear as they believe the mammal was only playing with Alchagirov.
