Video Highlights Famous Republicans Who Have Smoked Pot

The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), an advocacy group that seeks to legalize marijuana, released a new "yearbook" style video highlighting a series of high-profile Republicans who have smoked or otherwise used pot.

The Republican party historically takes an outspoken "war on drugs" stance against the use of marijuana.  Many of the conservative folks featured in the video started out as advocates of marijuana legalization. Most of them have since adopted a prohibitionist attituded against the herb's use, even for medical purposes.

At the end of the video, words appear across the screen to point out the fact that 100 million "successful Americans" have used marijuana, and "even more" thnk it should be legal.

The Grand Old Partiers featured in the film include:

  • Newt Gingritch, former speaker of the House
  • Rand Paul, U.S. Senator
  • George W. Bush, former U.S. president
  • Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska
  • Rush Limbaugh, radio show host
  • Rob Portman, U.S. senator
  • George Pataki, former governor or New York
  • Clarence Thomas, U.S. Supreme Court justice
  • Pete Domenici, former U.S. senator
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger, former governor of California
  • Susan Molinari, former U.S. representative
  • Rick Santorum, former U.S. senator
  • Glenn Beck, talk radio host
  • Gary Johnson, former governor of New Mexico

Mason Tvert, the director of communications for MPP, said the organization's goal is not to embarrass the prominent conservatives in the film.

"About half of the American population has used marijuana at some point during their lives, and clearly it is something that spans the political and ideological spectrums," he said. "Marijuana is an objectively less harmful substance than alcohol, and there is no reason for an adult who has chosen to use it responsibly to be embarrassed by their decision. It is a shame that being arrested for using marijuana can lead to life-altering consequences, but fortunately that was not the case for these highly successful individuals."
