Jon Stewart: We Have to Make Gun Violence Less Sexy -- Like Casting Woody Allen in the Next Bourne Movie
On Tuesday, Jon Stewart continued his (unarmed) rampage against the nation’s inability to enact gun reform in the wake of Sandy Hook and the mass shooting in Aurora.
“We can’t do anything about this?” he railed. “How about we make assault rifles only available at shooting ranges, make guns less sexy so they won’t be considered cool by young people, the next Jason Bourne movie stars Woody Allen? How about that?!”
Rejecting the stock, Second Amendment argument used by many pro-gun activists, he exclaimed, “You can have all the muskets you want! You can even have assault muskets!”
Finally, as he dug down to the root of the inability for the U.S.—a nation of reactionaries who went so far as to demand McDonald’s put a “hot!” warning on its coffee cups—he realized that much of this reluctance was being driven by a few hyper-vigilant gun enthusiasts who fear a fascist future.
But did this convince Stewart? Of course not.
“Their paranoid fear of a possible dystopic future prevents us from addressing its actual dystopic present,” he said solemnly. “We can’t even begin to address 30,000 gun deaths that are actually, in reality, happening in our country every year because a few of us must remain vigilant against the rise of an imaginary Hitler. ”
