Catholic Priest Tells Fox News Their 'War on Christmas' Narrative is 'Silly'

Every holiday season, Fox News gins up outrage over a so-called “war on Christmas.” But this year, one of the news network’s guests has challenged the hysteria over the holiday season.

Catholic priest Jonathan Morris seems like a typical Fox News contributor. Deeply conservative, Morris has said that Islam is a “messed up” religion and that clergy should be willing to “die” fighting President Obama’s birth control coverage policies, as Think Progress noted. But yesterday, he dealt a blow to Fox’s “war on Christmas” narrative.

Questioned by a Fox host as to why he wasn’t feeling angry this holiday season over the “war on Christmas,” Morris replied by dismissing the usual right-wing narrative. “If our Christmas is going to be all about getting upset at people trying to take away Christmas, isn’t that silly too?” said Morris.

After Morris let some sense shine through on Fox, one of the Fox hosts interviewing him caught the sensible fever as well. The host noted that the majority of people in the U.S. say “Merry Christmas,” compared to a much smaller set of people who prefer “Happy Holidays.” This quip, too, undermines the narrative that Christmas is under attack.

At the end of the segment, Morris also remarks: “You guys look so angry about this war on Christmas!”
