Marco Rubio Says Maybe Earth Created in 7 Days -- So Much for GOP Getting Smarter

The Republican Party has an image problem, and top GOP officials recognize that. But that problem is now being exacerbated by a leading Republican who is likely to become a presidential candidate in 2016: Marco Rubio (R-FL). Rubio, the junior senator from Florida, is coming under some fire for hinting that he may be sympathetic to creationism.

Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana had it exactly right when, in the aftermath of Mitt Romney blaming his election loss on the “gifts” President Obama gave to his supporters, he blasted Romney and his party for saying dumb things.

“We also don’t need to be saying stupid things,” said Jindal, who is also being talked about as a potential 2016 nominee.

Rubio, though, is throwing the GOP off message. In an interview with GQ Magazine, Rubio was asked how old he thought the earth was.

He responded by saying, “I'm not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that's a dispute amongst theologians.”

Rubio added that “whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I'm not sure we'll ever be able to answer that. It's one of the great mysteries.” It’s certainly not the type of rhetoric that will appeal to young people.

Raw Story also notes that in the same interview, Rubio said his best friend, with the exception of his wife, was Senator Demint (R-SC). Demint, a Tea Party standard-bearer, “has called for creationism to be taught in schools and has argued that God put Christians in charge of ‘this vineyard we call America,” Raw Story notes.
