'Erratic and Startling': Aide to George Romney Blasts Mitt's Campaign Tactics

A former campaign strategist to George Romney blasted the GOP candidate in a letter distributed to journalists yesterday.

Walter De Vries was close to the senior Romney, and served during George Romney's terms as Michigan governor. De Vries’ salvo draws a sharp contrast between Mitt Romney and his father, calling the Republican candidate’s conduct during the election campaign “erratic and startling.”

In an interview with the New York Times, De Vries explained that he was motivated to write the essay as a result of Mitt Romney’s actions, like the “47 percent” comments and his courting of Donald Trump. “George would never have been seen with the likes of Sheldon Adelson or Donald Trump,” De Vries told the Times, adding that he would vote for President Obama in the 2012 election.

The Times quotes De Vries as being annoyed “by Mr. Romney’s repeated references recently to his father as inspiration and influence on him.” "“I just don’t see it,” he told the Times' Michael Barbaro. "Where is it? Is it on issues, no? On the way he campaigns? No.”

The letter’s content is stinging, attacking Mitt Romney for his willingness to “say and do anything to close a deal--or an election.” George Romney’s strength, on the other hand, came from “his ability and determination to develop and hold consistent policy positions over his whole life,” writes De Vries.

De Vries concludes by quoting George Romney saying, “as you campaign, so shall you govern.” In Mitt Romney’s case, De Vries writes, “that lesson...seems to be lost in the win-at-any-cost fog of politics in the 21st century.”
