More Center-Right Nation Drivel?
This column praising the "moderates" who are obstructing real health reform, by Steve and Cokie Roberts, hangs together on its face.
But if read while keeping in mind that a very large share of the public has no clue what "liberalism" or "conservatism" really means, it becomes clear what drivel their whole center-right nation narrative is.
Based on Americans' views on the substantive issues -- the economy, environment, corporate governance, trade policy, etc. -- I've been compelled to characterize the U.S. as a center-left country. But it's always been pretty to me at least that, as a polity, we lean just a bit to the right on many cultural issues -- issues over which the government has little sway -- and, like the citizens of every other liberal democracy, by and large expect the state to do just a small amount to balance out the inequities inherent in a modern capitalist system.
