Would Sarah Palin's Family Be Covered Under McCain Care?

Personal Health

In Sarah Palin's rousing acceptance speech, the Alaska governor made a promise that was music to many Americans' ears:

To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters. I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.
This is a momentous oath -- and one that means Governor Palin cannot in good faith support the health care plan of her running mate, Senator McCain. Why not? Unfortunately Senator McCain's plan would allow most insurance companies in the individual market to continue their current practices of denying coverage, charging far higher premiums, and excluding crucial medical services based on peoples' pre-existing conditions. This kind of discrimination by health insurance companies is meant to keep people with expensive medical problems, like Downs Syndrome or Autism, from cutting into profit margins. The McCain health plan does not adequately protect families with special needs kids who may find themselves searching for health coverage in the individual market. In fact, other components of his plan may force more families out of their employer-based health plan and into this vulnerable position.

Hopefully Governor Palin will recognize these problems for consumers in Senator McCain's health reform proposal and make good on her promise to American families with special needs kids.
