Senator Craig Thomas, a Wyoming Republican who was re-elected to this third term in the US Senate in November 2006, has died, according to breaking news reports.

The Associated Press confirmed that Thomas had passed away on Monday evening, according to a statement issued by his family.

Earlier in the day, various news reports indicated that Thomas was in critical condition and receiving treatment at Bethesda Naval Medical Center in Maryland for complications related to leukemia. Unfortunately, the treatments were rejected by his body. He had initially checked into the hospital on May 24.

Thomas is the third Member of Congress to pass away during the 110th Congress. Rep. Charles Norwood (R-GA) passed away in February, and Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA) died in April.

According to Congressional Quarterly, the Wyoming Republican Party will put forward one of three options for Thomas's successor.

"If Thomas should die or resign, Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, would name a replacement who would serve until a successor can be chosen in a November 2008 special election," the news service noted in an afternoon report. "But under Wyoming law, he would have to choose from a list of three candidates put forward by the Republican State Central Committee, because Thomas is a Republican."
