Future Dem senators, where are you on Iraq?
Sheldon Whitehouse has to be agressive on Iraq to win the Rhode Island Senate seat from Lincoln Chafee because Chafee is the only Republican who voted against the Iraq resolution.
But considering that there's such cluelessness going on in national politics that some Dem Senate candidates are talking about stem cells at this point -- not Iraq -- it's a miracle that Whitehouse actually is pretty open on the matter.
And his position on Iraq is really good n' clear: "I support a rapid and responsible withdrawal of our troops from Iraq. To do that, we need to make it clear to the Iraqis and to other nations that we are in withdrawal mode. Iraqis must understand that very soon they will assume responsibility for the security, governance and administration of their country. We need to do this for our country and for our troops."
Compare that with Tennessee's Harold Ford Jr.:
No, that's not a typo. I just couldn't find an Iraq or even a foreign policy section for Harold Ford's Issues page. Iraq isn't an issue. I listened to a radio show segment of his "serious talk" on Iraq, in which he came out and said of politicians who want to pull out of Iraq, "I think they are wrong."
