Lieberman given Millions by Republicans?

News & Politics

A breathless article in the Washington Times' Insight Mag declares that: "The White House funneled millions of dollars through major Republican Party contributors to Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s primary campaign in a failed effort to ensure the support of the former Democrat for the Bush administration."

Interesting if true, but many smell a rat. The information comes via a "senior GOP source" to the ultra-conservative Moonie-owned, Republican-edited magazine. Insight is generally recognized as an echo chamber for the most conformist elements in the Republican Party. So the likelihood that a senior Republican met with a like-minded publication to leak a failed Republican effort to purchase a Democratic-esque senator is fairly low.

Early reports suggest that there hasn't even been an appreciable increase in GOP donations to Lieberman. What is going on is anybody's guess but where Rove lurks, reality wilts.
