Liquid terror plot fizzles

Kevin Drum notes that the investigation into the so-called liquid terror conspiracy isn't turning up the kind of damning evidence you might expect from the threat that triggered the first ever red alert from Homeland Security.

The Associated Press has the latest on the unfolding inquiry: Many suspects are in custody and the British Home Secretary says there's "mounting evidence" that some people are guilty of some serious crimes.

Shouldn't we have more than "mounting evidence" after a year of surveillance?

Later in the same AP article:
Two top Pakistani intelligence agents said Wednesday that the would-be bombers wanted to carry out an al-Qaida-style attack to mark the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 strikes, but were too "inexperienced" to carry out the plot.

The two senior agents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that if the terror cell members arrested in Pakistan and Britain had appropriate weapons and explosives training, they could have emulated massive attacks like those five years ago in New York and Washington as well as the July 7, 2005, London bombings.
If they had been trained, they could have pulled it off. For this, a red alert?
