UPDATE: A (NEW) fresh blow for Lieberman

(Scroll down for UPDATE) Truth be told there wasn't much Joementum to begin with. After years of undermining Democratic unity and voting with the GOP on everything from the Iraq War to right wing judges to Alberto "torture memo" Gonzales (to the infamous kiss pictured here), the blogs took it upon themselves to show Lieberman that there's more to being a Democrat than the "D."

After all the hard work of the blogs and the courage (and cash) of Ned Lamont, Lieberman's challenger for the Democratic nomination, the Connecticut incumbent's been forced to take the challenge seriously... though it may be too late.

The latest blow came today, what ctblogger calls "very really big news": "AFT Connecticut, the state’s second largest AFL-CIO union representing more than 26,000 professionals" gave its endorsement to Ned Lamont.

Joe, meanwhile, is busy running attack ads (a MAJOR sign of distress for an incumbent in primary race) calling the anti-war Lamont "a republican" and refusing to rule out a switch to "independent."

That is, although Lamont vows to support Lieberman 100% as the Democratic candidate should he win the primary, Lieberman won't do the same.

UPDATE: The latest Rasmussen poll shows Lieberman's numbers slipping even further. From a 51-31 lead just six weeks ago to a 46-40 margin this week. Again, for an incumbent this is VERY BAD NEWS. Whether he wins or not, whether he goes independent or not, this is a forceful statement a.) for the netroots and b.) against kowtowing to the president and the Republican party.

A blogger for the Hartford Courant writes:

In the battle between the Underdog and the Lapdog, the evidence mounts that the Joe Lieberman camp has not only lost touch with the senator's home state but with reality, too. Those folks have been in George W. Bush's pocket so long they're even talking like him now.
...
"The only public record this guy [Lamont] has, he voted time and again like a Republican," [Lieberman spokesman, Sean] Smith said. "Why would we support that?"

...
[W]hen you lie down with Republicans you get up with GOP fleas. It is a hallmark of the Bush Compassion to eye-gouge and kidney-punch a foe to his knees and the truth or logic doesn't count. If Lamont once voted like a Republican you could imagine that the Republicans' favorite "Democratic" senator would clap him on the back in admiration. Instead, they try to make a charge out of something the senator himself has been doing again and again.
