How low will Mike McCurry's org go?
The subject line of one of yesterday's emails read: "'Net Neutrality' Liberal Scam..."
I thought, man, what Liberal Scam have the Gun Owners of America, Brent Bozell, and Instapundit cooked up this time?
That's right, stalwart Conservatives like those above have joined the Savetheinternet coalition to preserve the First Amendment of the Internet but the Rightwing loony toons at William Greene's Rightmarch.com, who sent the above email, see the words MoveOn.org -- GAH! -- and they head for the hills. Or borders if there's some imm'grints what needs watchin'...
But whatever, I mean this is a Richard Viguerie acolyte, a card-carrying member of the Minutemen; border patrolers, who themselves are on the border of racist vigilantism.
What's truly sickening is that the aforementioned email announced a Rightmarch radio show featuring Mike McCurry's Handsofftheinternet co-Chairman, Christopher Wolf.
The Handsoff website, with its lovey-dovey hands in the air banner, announces that it is: "a nationwide coalition of Internet users united together in the belief that the Net's phenomenal growth over the past decade stems from the ability of entrepreneurs to expand consumer choices and opportunities without worrying about government regulation."
If by "Internet users" you mean telecommunications companies that stand to make a great deal of money controlling consumer choice of goods and information, then yes, good description.
A glance at Hands' Member Organizations page reveals scores of telcoms and starve-the-beasters side by side in the fight to end your internet freedom.
Mike McCurry is a paid lobbyist for these telcoms who, according to Jeff Chester, are currently spending a million dollars per week on a "PR Blitz" to convince Americans of exactly the opposite of what's going on: that net neutrality threatens them.
McCurry's co-chair Christopher Wolf appeared on Rightmarch's radio program today to push their corporate-funded agenda. That's Rightmarch of the Tom DeLay is "a man of true integrity and character"; Rightmarch of the drill the ANWR; Rightmarch of the War on Christmas!; Rightmarch who promotes the jingoistic bozos the Right Bros, a pair that sings Rove-crafted pseudo-country jingles littered with Republican talking points. Their big hit? Bush was Right.
I wonder if there's some way to start a contest where net neutrality opponents would earn a set of ashen neuticles for every lie, undisclosed backer or sleazy organization they associate themselves with. Any takers?
