Criminal stupidity and Iran.

As Evan pointed out in Peek, Seymour Hersh's latest has the Whitehouse gearing up for a bombing campaign against Iran, perhaps using nukes.

Of course, the administration's thinking -- if we can call it that -- starts with a Hitler comparison. Because everyone from Ho Chi Minh to Maurice Bishop to Saddam Hussein was The Next Hitlerâ„¢ in his day -- Next Hitlers are as common as "number three" men in al Qaeda.

There is a growing conviction among members of the United States military, and in the international community, that President Bush's ultimate goal in the nuclear confrontation with Iran is regime change. Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has challenged the reality of the Holocaust and said that Israel must be "wiped off the map." Bush and others in the White House view him as a potential Adolf Hitler, a former senior intelligence official said. "That's the name they're using. They say, 'Will Iran get a strategic weapon and threaten another world war?'"
If Iran gets a nuclear weapon, it'll be able to defend itself from a ground invasion. That's the real danger.

The irony is that it would probably be good for the stability of the region. An Iranian nuke precludes the U.S. from launching its next ill-conceived War For Energy Supply Stability. And it might create the kind of terrifying-but-stable nuclear stalemate with Israel that kept the Cold War cold for fifty years. Remember that Iran has not universally -- or even widely -- been regarded as a rogue state in recent years. The idea that they're building nukes in order to launch them is based on nothing but paranoia. Everyone but the Bush administration understands the deadly seriousness of nuclear war-fighting.
