Bush NSA bars homos from security clearance

It'd be a shame to ignore the irony of having Stephen Hadley, Bush's National Security Advisor, be the guy to "tighten" the regulations governing security clearance.

Like having a failed businessman as a CEO president and industry insiders regulating their own industries, I guess.

Hadley* was fingered as the guy who leaked undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame's name to Bob Woodward. In other words, a man who endangered Plame, her coworkers, anyone involved in their missions and the security of the nation, is now rewriting the rules. Nice.

One of those rules, as Pam Spaulding points out, is that gays can now be barred from security clearance for being gay. Via Raw Story:

Whereas the 1997 revision declared that sexual orientation "may not be used" as a basis for disqualifying applicants, Hadley’s revisions declare that clearances cannot be denied "solely on the basis of the sexual orientation of the individual."
Of course, if you haven't been gay "recently" you're okay, according to the revisions.

Spaulding does agree, however, that closeted gays wouldn't make the best secret-keepers as "The sickness of the closet opens them up to blackmail and places them at risk for some of the legitimate reasons listed for the NSA to reject someone according to the guidelines, such as questionable judgment, untrustworthiness, unreliability, and lack of candor."

John Byrne and Larisa Alexandrovna also point out that while the regulations once stipulated that you could be barred for "act[ing] in such a way as to indicate preference for a foreign country over the United States," the revision specifies that "the vocalization of allegiance to another country is grounds for denial." In other words, even if you prefer the U.S., no more jokes about moving to Canada or you go to that level of hell known as the Redacted Room...

*Hadley was also a part of the WHIG, "the marketing arm of the Republican Party whose purpose was to sell the 2003 invasion of Iraq to the public." He submitted his resignation after leaving the Bush lie about Saddam's attempt to purchase Yellowcake for WMD in the president's state of the union speech (writing that he "failed in that responsibility"). The resignation was refused and he was given a promotion instead, taking Condi's job when she took Colin Powel's. (RawStory, Pam's House Blend)
