Horrifying …

News & Politics

I caught a horrific glimpse into the terrified mind of the modern conservative today, courtesy of Mark Steyn. For my money, you can keep your Fred Barnses and your Daniel Henningers - Steyn is the wingnuttiest guy to have a broad readership. (I concede it might be a tie between Steyn and David Gelerntner.)

Anyway, here's his shtick from today's OpinionJournal:

Most people reading this have strong stomachs, so let me lay it out as baldly as I can: Much of what we loosely call the Western world will not survive this century, and much of it will effectively disappear within our lifetimes, including many if not most Western European countries. There'll probably still be a geographical area on the map marked as Italy or the Netherlands--probably--just as in Istanbul there's still a building called St. Sophia's Cathedral. But it's not a cathedral; it's merely a designation for a piece of real estate. Likewise, Italy and the Netherlands will merely be designations for real estate.
I wonder who first decided that the West was on its last legs and fighting for its very existence. We have all the nukes, all the money, all the military power. We dominate the global culture, its legal systems and its politics.

The idea, on its face, is as silly as the War on Christmas, yet it seems to be a pervasive belief among the right. Is it that they read too much Sam Huntington?

And aren't you glad that you're not similarly terrified?

Steyn moves on to the heart of the problem: progressive policies and not enough dern baby-making:
