Electronic voting goes open source in Wisconsin

Uranus Hz and Badger Blues report that Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle signed a bill Wednesday that mandates all touch screen voting machines in the state run on open source code and produce paper ballots.

Badger Blues elaborates the key open source provision:
Any electronic voting machines used in the state of Wisconsin are now required to be open source, and the code must be made available to anyone who wants to see it. It’s a necessary but probably not sufficient step towards insuring the reliability of any electronic voting system. The law requires that: "The coding for the software that is used to operate the system on election day and to tally the votes cast is publicly accessible and may be used to independently verify the accuracy and reliability of the operating and tallying procedures to be employed at any election."
