He may actually be one of the biggest boons to Bush and the GOP. Whenever a talking point needs pointing to or that bipartisan sheen needs buffing, Joe Lieberman has a tendency to be the one to do it.

But loathe to give up a "D" in their declining ranks -- especially a veteran one like Lieberman -- irritation has been mostly confined to chatter.

The chatter seems to be changing. As David Sirota points out: "Well, it seems like it is finally starting to happen -- Connecticut seems to now be moving into a boil over Sen. Joe Lieberman's (D) continued efforts to be a mouthpiece for the Bush administration's Iraq War policy."

He notes that:

  • Manchester's Democratic Town Committee is holding a meeting to decide whether to send a formal letter of rebuke.
  • Former Conn. Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. will challenge Lieberman in '06 if no challenger emerges
  • And MoveOn has announced that it would consider supporting a challenge to Lieberman

All this adds up to a message, if nothing else, for Joe to move away from the president or risk being laid off.

*Special note: The comments in David Sirota's original post have a disturbing tendency to focus on Lieberman's being Jewish. Unless it has anything to do with, well, anything but bigotry I'd love it if Peek readers would display just a bit more taste and integrity in the comments -- e.d. (Sirotablog)
