I spoke with executive editor Jessica Valenti last week; the idea for the project came from frustration that men's magazines choose hot women based solely on their appearance... when I thought about it, even People's Most Eligible Bachelors talk plenty about the bachelor's life accomplishments (nevermind the fact that some of them leave a lot to be desired in the appearance department).
So, next year, The REAL Hot 100 will be published to coincide with Maxim's Hot 100 issue. Got a special lady in mind? Nominate her today!
The editors of one of my favorite sources for feminist news, Feministing, have launched a contest to find the hottest 100 young women in the scene today. This ain't your mother's beauty contest, of course -- check out The REAL Hot 100:
We're tired of the media telling young women how to be "hot"! The REAL hot 100 shows that young women are "hot" for reasons beyond their ability to pose provocatively in a magazine. REALLY hot women are smart. REALLY hot women work for change. REALLY hot women aren't afraid to speak their minds. And while some REALLY hot women might look awesome in a bikini, they know that's not all they have to offer.
