Fox sued for sexual harassment and discrimination

News & Politics

On the heels of Bill O'Reilly's sexual harassment troubles last year (who can forget Bill's fascination with loofah sponges?) comes a full-blown federal suit against the network. It's not much of a surprise that sexual harassment and discrimination happens around the Good Ol' Boys' Network, but fantastic that women are standing up and saying something... in court. From The Broadsheet:

On Tuesday, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit in federal district court in Manhattan against the Fox News network, claiming that the cable channel has discriminated against female employees.

Many of the suit's charges center on Fox vice president Joe Chillemi, who is accused of using "gross obscenities and vulgarities when describing women or their body parts," cursing at and denigrating women at work, proclaiming that "of course" he'd pick a man over a woman for a given position because the woman might get pregnant and leave her job, and telling female employees to "be a man."
Naturally, Fox's lawyers are blowing it off, saying none of the comments constitute discrimination or harassment. Looking at all of the documentation thus far, though -- Media Matters has two posts here and here about various hosts' behavior on and off Fox's sets -- it'll be hard for any judge not to look at this and see what the culture of Fox is about when it comes to women.

Of course, now we'll all have Brit Hume's boot fetish in our heads, right up there with O'Reilly's loofah.

UPDATE: A commenter shares the experience of working at Fox Sports... more of the same:
An overall attitude that no woman can do anything right, and certainly not without help. Of all the places I have worked, this is one of the worst.
