Unconscionable numbers

Here are the numbers from Robert Fisk's visit to the Baghdad morgue:

July was the bloodiest month in Baghdad's modern history - in all, 1,100 bodies were brought to the city's mortuary; executed for the most part, eviscerated, stabbed, bludgeoned, tortured to death. The figure is secret. ...
Of the dead, 963 were men - many with their hands bound, their eyes taped and bullets in their heads - and 137 women. The statistics are as shameful as they are horrifying. For these are the men and women we supposedly came to "liberate" - and about whose fate we do not care.
And this number is just for Badhdad, which is supposedly safer and more controlled than the countryside. I put this number next to the other numbers swirling in my head today: the 90 percent of Ethiopian women who are beaten and sexually abused; the more than 23,000 dead in Pakistan.

Here is today's Nobel Prize in Literature winner Harold Pinter, on war, from his poem "God Bless America":
“The gutters are clogged with the dead
The ones who couldn't join in
The others refusing to sing
The ones who are losing their voice
The ones who've forgotten the tune.
...
And all the dead air is alive
With the smell of America's God."
