DeLay game

News & Politics

The more I turn it over in my head, the more disturbed I am by Tom DeLay's argument.

His contention that the twin indictments of money laundering and campaign finance violations are groundless politically motivated attacks by Ronnie Earle (a conspiracy with the Democratic Party), is offensive and elitist.

Here's why: A Grand Jury is called when a prosecutor believes there is enough evidence to to hold a trial.

Comprised of ordinary Americans with no ponies in the race, the Grand Jury's whole raison d'etre is to function as a check against politically motivated prosecutors: "grand juries are part of the system of checks and balances, preventing a case from going to trial on a prosecutor's bare word."

So when the foreman of a group of impartial Americans says things like: "I am very much convinced that he had [knowledge of the transaction]," it's a powerful statement. It's also the sound of the American justice system working.

So next time you hear DeLay's protestations like "Ronnie Earle has stooped to a new low with his brand of prosecutorial abuse," or "Ronnie Earle may truly be the Elmer Fudd of politics," try this out:

Trade: "An impartial group of ordinary Americans"

For: "Ronnie Earle."

Here's what you come up with:

"An impartial group of ordinary Americans have stooped to a new low with [t]his brand of prosecutorial abuse."

"An impartial group of ordinary Americans may truly be the Elmer Fudd of politics."

Not the same is it?
