Tillman was a Chomsky fan

News & Politics

Pat Tillman, the pro-football star killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan, an ugly situation that was then covered up by the military, was inaccurately cast as a pro-war icon by the right-wing at the height of the election season, and hyped by Ann Coulter and George W. Bush. Now, Rob Collier in the San Francisco Chronicle shows a side of Pat Tillman not widely known -- a fiercely independent thinker who enlisted, fought and died in service to his country yet was critical of President Bush and opposed the war in Iraq, where he served a tour of duty. He was an avid reader whose interests ranged from history books on World War II and Winston Churchill to the works of leftist Noam Chomsky, a favorite author.

According to the Chron:

  • Tillman joined the Army specifically to fight Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, but was sent to participate in the invasion of Iraq against his wishes. He called the invasion, "so fucking illegal."
  • He was an avid reader and fan of Noam Chomsky. Tillman was scheduled to meet Chomsky upon his return from Afghanistan.
  • Tillman was an independent-minded, outspoken Bush critic who planned to vote for John Kerry.
