Speaking freely

Washington Post: "Rep. David Dreier (Calif.) appeared to be the initial choice of House Republican leaders to temporarily replace DeLay, but pressure from conservatives led Hastert to throw his support behind Blunt. Two high-level Republican sources said Blunt told the speaker it would look bad if he, the No. 3 leader, were passed over in favor of Dreier. Some members of the GOP leadership were unaware the switch had been made even as they entered the Republican conference meeting to announce the move, said one informed leadership aide, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely about the sensitive matter." [emphasis mine]

Well gosh, if the aide were speaking freely, he might have said that Dreier didn't get the job because he's gay. Or maybe he did and it didn't fit in the column space as they were going to press.
