If New Orleans was in Florida ...

Remember Charley?

You know, Charley, last August's hurricane that hit Florida on August 14, 2004 and killed at least 26 people and left hundreds homeless. It was bad.

So bad in fact that, the next day, President Bush flew to Florida to tour the damage with his brother. The president approved a major disaster declaration for Florida the day Charley made landfall. Federal Emergency Management Aid (FEMA) was increased. Within 24 hours of the hurricane hitting, food, clean water, and first aid were on their way to the damaged region.

President Bush then told reporters the damage was one of the wost things he had ever seen.

He hasn't said the same thing about Katrina yet, but I guess that's because he didn't get around to visiting until today.

What else did he say about Charley? "The spirit of America really shines at times of catastrophe," he said. "You're beginning to see neighbour helping neighbour."

That's quite a different tenor than anyone's comments about Hurricane Katrina. I guess it really helps your spirit to shine if you get a little aid from friends in high places.
