God fixed the poor

News & Politics
From Susanhu (who has extensive notes on Baker's less-than-philanthropic history): "Rep. Richard Baker of Baton Rouge is overheard telling lobbyists:
"'We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did.' Baker explains later he didn't intend flippancy but has long wanted to improve low-income housing." (Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire, Sept. 9, 2005)"
Gimme a break.

Ignore the backpeddling and reality-rigging due any minute now -- this is exactly what Baker meant, this is exactly what many Republican pols believe. They "improve" by destruction (see: War, Iraq). Got a problem? Are there brown people involved? Trash it.

To them, God is invoked to shirk responsibility, to avoid culpability. It's amazing these people don't spontaneously combust. (Booman Tribune)
