Withdrawal gaining momentum

Juan Cole touched off the latest round of questions in the liberal blogosphere by surprising more than a few readers with an argument against immediate US withdrawal from Iraq as it "neglects to consider the full range of possible disasters that could ensue."

He goes on to argue that a situation akin to the genocide in Darfur could erupt in Iraq:
"People often allege that the US military isn't doing any good in Iraq and there is already a civil war. These people have never actually seen a civil war and do not appreciate the lid the US military is keeping on what could be a volcano."
But the post is titled "Ten Things Congress Could Demand from Bush on Iraq," so it's not as though he's at a loss for ideas, indignation or criticism.

Meanwhile Arianna Huffington summarizes three op-eds, in three of the nation's most influential papers, urging a conversation about withdrawal. (Informed Comment)
