Cheney Vs. Clinton
That's Bob Woodward's prediction for the 2008 presidential elections -- in other words, a rerun of 2004. Uninspiring Democratic candidate terrified of being called a liberal takes on uber-conservative Republican who wears his politics on his sleeve. Some lefty bloggers think a Cheney run is a dream come true -- sure, until the rightwing machine turns Hillary into a flip-flopping, power-hungry closet lesbian. At which time, Dick would have completed his media reincarnation as the wise, old man of American politics (If that sounds crazy, check the coverage of his debate with Edwards.)
Quite apart from the GOP-inflicted damage, a Hillary candidacy would be a greater disaster than anyone the Republicans might pick in 2008. Why? Because her towering book sales aside, the reality is that Clinton polarizes both men and women -- and not always because she's a feminist. Worse, people who hate her more do so more intensely than those who love her. She's the kind of person who can inspire respect but rarely affection, i.e. she's just not likable -- and yes, that does matter, a lot. [LINK]
