Updated! Bombs in London

British blogger Robin Grant is "live-blogging" the situation.

Blasts claimed by Al Qaeda in Europe (though many experts claim that a. there is no single entity called Al Qaeda and b. that there is a "peacock" phenomenon wherein many groups claim responsibility to raise their stature in Jihadist circles.)

Tony Blair's statement here.

"A series of coordinated bomb blasts have hit central London today, at the height of the morning rush hour. At least 41 people have been killed, and there may be more than 1,000 injured," writes Neil McIntosh of the Guardian UK's blog (most bloggers are relying on the papers at this point...).

"We seem to be under terrorist attack at the moment here in London, with explosions on both the Underground and on London buses. Authorities originally explained the disruptions as a cascading technical problem but once the buses went off that explanation obviously didn't work," writes Avedon from London.

Eyewitness accounts here.

From Oliver Willis: "The mayor of London is totally kickass. To the terrorists: 'Whatever you do, however many you kill, you will fail.' Ken Livingstone, mayor of London:

"This is not an attack against the rich and powerful. It is not an attack on the politicians, but on the common working people of London"

"We have seen that you are not afraid to take your own lives but what you did is just mass murder."

"I can tell you now that you will fail in your long-term objectives to destroy our free society."

"In the days that follow, look at our airports and seaports, and even after your cowardly attacks, you will still see people from around the world coming to London to achieve their dreams."

From Justin Logan: "Just flipped on Fox News here at work for their take on the London bombings. Within two seconds of changing the channel to Fox, the anchor provided this comentary (paraphrasing from memory):
I think this just demonstrates that the terrorists know we're at war. And some people, in some parts of this country, recognize we're at war. I think it's time we all get our act together and recognize we're at war.
They could at least have let the Brits finish counting the dead before spinning the thing for political purposes.

Really disgusting."
