Mega-church smackdown

Jeff Sharlet, author of a recent Harper's article on the mega-churches that caused such a stir, debates Rob Brendle, Associate Pastor for Ted Haggard's ("Pastor Ted") New Life Church -- the largest and, some say, the most powerful mega-church in America.

Sharlet: "So: Since New Life has defended its right to hide knowledge from the public, even on matters of international importance to us all; and since New Life has demonstrated its willingness to pretend to be something other than it is: How are we to trust what you say in this forum?"

Brendle:"I have some exciting news for you: I just got word that CNN would like to spend an evening in your home filming a night in the life of the Sharlet family... Now please understand, the viewing public desires an authentic depiction of your home life, so there’s no need to put the dishes in the dishwasher or pick up the toys on the floor. You shouldn’t bother to remind your children to behave themselves..."
