Definition of independence

"On July Fourth, 2005... Bush will stand before the world and boldly declare independence for the United States of America. This time, President Bush declaring the United States independent of the world when it comes to the environment [at the G-8 Summit]," writes Jeffrey Feldman. "'Independence' in the eyes of our founders was not about acting alone. It was not the act of one man standing up and talking back to a world that would have him do its bidding. 'Independence' in the great American sense of the word is not about one person or one nation acting against the will of the many...On this July Fourth, therefore, while our President is busy declaring independence, perhaps we should all take a moment to remember how we as Americans celebrate this holiday.

Americans do not sit quietly by ourselves on independence day.

Americans do not step aside for quiet reflection on independence day.

Independence day for Americans is about gathering together... (Frameshop)
