Another AFL-CIO surprise

News & Politics

"The AFL-CIO -- under pressure by the split from the federation of the SEIU, the Teamsters, and other members of the Change to Win coalition of unions -- has adopted a major policy shift, as its convention in Chicago voted this afternoon for a resolution calling for a 'rapid' return of all U.S. troops currently in Iraq," writes Doug Ireland.

Sure, it isn't going to have antiwar folks dancing in the streets but it's a start and it's worlds better than the original wording "as quickly as possible"... also known as meaningless.

Ireland includes the words of one union district president and father of an Iraq soldier who exclaimed: "In my forty-five years in the labor movement, this is my proudest moment in being a union member, because it is the first time we had the courage to say 'enough is enough." (Direland)
