Red state workers to stay 'in the red'
June 02, 2005
"Given that we have a Republican-controlled Congress that will fight to the death against an increase in the federal minimum wage – didn't you slackers just get a raise eight years ago? -- many states are going their own way and hiking their wage rates to make up for the federal government's compassionate conservatism," writes Bob Geiger who points to "the startling similarity between states that tend to vote Democratic and those where people stand a better chance of making a living wage" at a time when: "It is estimated that the buying power of the minimum wage is at its lowest point in almost 60 years." Side note: Floridians voted for Bush but they actually voted to give themselves a pay raise.
