Microsoft bans "democracy," "freedom," etc., in China
June 15, 2005
Microsoft recently deployed a new internet portal in China, but decided not to tickle the Chinese regime by allowing words like "democracy," "freedom" and "human rights." Rebecca MacKinnon sums up the essence of the problem nicely: "No outsiders, including Microsoft, can force China to change. But nobody's asking Microsoft to force China to do anything. The issue is whether Microsoft should be collaborating with the Chinese regime as it builds an increasingly sophisticated system of Internet censorship and control." (RConversation via InstaPundit)
