Media Mash: Back by Popular Demand

Before the blog was even a figment of anyone's imagination, there was Media Mash -- a potpourri of news, gossip, insight and web links all connected to the world of communications, be it print, internet, film, music, TV or simply word-of-mouth (called viral these days). So with the advent of bloggermania, especially of the obnoxious conservative variety, the Masher feels it's time to jump back into the fray and try to provide some balance to the bloggers of the right and center.

Michael Moore Trifecta: Next Stop, Broadway?

Stupid White MenYou may know that Michael Moore's documentary, "Bowling for Columbine," has been voted the best documentary of all time in a poll taken of 2,000 documentary filmmakers around the U.S. and the world by the International Documentary Association. The film has doubled the record for the amount of money earned by a documentary. And you may even be aware that Moore's book, "Stupid White Men," is in its 40th printing and has been on the New York Times bestseller list for 39 weeks.

But did you know that Moore has sold out 37 straight shows in his one-person show in London in December, while leading the box office gross? The Masher is plainly flabbergasted.

In the starry-eyed words of one critic: "5 Stars! I left this odd display of social, personal and political commentary feeling, in equal parts, ashamed, challenged and inspired -- but above all, alive" (Terri Paddock, "What's On Stage").

If Moore can actually transform people to feeling ALIVE, the Masher wonders: Can his Broadway opening be far behind?

Boycott Rush Limbaugh Sponsors

Bloviating Rush is still at it, and he is escalating his rhetoric to match the bellicose brayings from Bush, Powell, Wolfowitz and Co.

According to media maven Mark Crispin Miller, Rush Limbaugh now refers to anti-war activists as "fascists and anti-American. Rush is a daily stream of strong narcotic, stupefying millions who believe he speaks on their behalf when all he's trying to do is help this government screw all of us. His rantings are not just divisive, but inflammatory, as he demonizes everyone who disagrees with his paymasters. So we should fight back in the only democratic way at hand, which is to make his corporate sponsors nervous about backing him."

The Masher is happy to offer any support to harass the master harasser. Go to Take Back the Media and get the details on the companies that pay Rush's way ... and stick it to 'em.

Jaime Kibben Memorial

In the world of talkers and listeners, Jaime Kibben was definitely a talker. With his death in a car crash in Israel while making a film about the hopes for peace in these dark times, our world lost a great storyteller, a committed progressive, and one of those simply good guys about which nobody had anything bad to say.

Jaime's warmth and his unerring capacity to simply stick to doing what is necessary to get the job done made him hundreds of friends across the globe. For Jaime, work, politics, love and family all blended together in the magical mystery of life -- and more than most people, he lived life the way he wanted to.

On Jaime's memorial site you can read some wonderful testimonials from people who knew him well. Also there you'll find details about his memorial service--which will be held at the Cowell Theater at San Francisco's Fort Mason on Feb. 24; gathering is at 6pm; service at 7pm -- and ways to contribute to the memorial fund to help his family.

ACLU By ACLUSponsored

Imagine you've forgotten once again the difference between a gorilla and a chimpanzee, so you do a quick Google image search of “gorilla." But instead of finding images of adorable animals, photos of a Black couple pop up.

Is this just a glitch in the algorithm? Or, is Google an ad company, not an information company, that's replicating the discrimination of the world it operates in? How can this discrimination be addressed and who is accountable for it?

“These platforms are encoded with racism," says UCLA professor and best-selling author of Algorithms of Oppression, Dr. Safiya Noble. “The logic is racist and sexist because it would allow for these kinds of false, misleading, kinds of results to come to the fore…There are unfortunately thousands of examples now of harm that comes from algorithmic discrimination."

On At Liberty this week, Dr. Noble joined us to discuss what she calls “algorithmic oppression," and what needs to be done to end this kind of bias and dismantle systemic racism in software, predictive analytics, search platforms, surveillance systems, and other technologies.
