HIGHTOWER: Where are the Democrats?

How about that Pat? Pat Buchanan I mean. He's stirring them up, isn't he?This Republican infidel is charging full-tilt at the Holy Walls of the Established Order, slinging some heavy stones at NAFTA, The Fed, Free-Trade and other brittle buttresses of our economic hierarchy. So here comes the establishment, firing back in The New York Times: "Wacky," "simplistic," "perverse," "anti-corporation" . . . whew! All this and more in a single editorial -- so many invectives, so little space. Now, I'm no fan of Pat Buchanan. He's a xenophobic, ego-maniacal, intolerant, right-wing Republican -- David Duke without the white sheets. But he also is right on target with his assault on Washington's trade scams and other economic policies that are fattening the moneyed elites at the expense of the middle class.. And this is why he's doing so well at the polls. The galling thing for me and other progressive Democrats is that this fight against the corporate establishment and for working families is the very one we should be making -- but where is our party?Hunkered down inside the Sheraton hotel in New York. This is where Bill Clinton and all the Democratic Party big shots were while Buchanan was going over the hill in New Hampshire with our populist issues. Our party's leaders were holding a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser last week in the Sheraton with the very same Wall Street fat cats who have saddled working folks with NAFTA, GATT and their entire agenda of global greed.Whose side are we on?It's time for the Democratic Party to take off its Guccis and Puccis, strap-on those old Sears Roebuck work boots again and begin fighting for working people. The question is not, "What will Buchanan do next?" The question is, "What will the Democratic Party do?"
