DURST: The Debate Over the Debates
The big political news is the deep debate over the debate about the debates. Yes it seems Dole and Clinton have gotten so woundup, they can't even decide how to disagree. See, the deal is, back in 87, both parties agreed to form an independent commission that would organize the debates in order to remove responsibility from the slimy clutches of those synchronized sleazemeisters we have come to know as candidates. I guess it is often suspected that politicians tend to regard their own self interests over the public's. It is also generally thought that vultures don't give "cuts".So after consulting various communications experts, the commission settled on a format. But then Clinton decided he' wants to go long, with 3 debates of 2 hours with 3 moderators each, while Dole wants 4 debates 75 minutes long with only 1 moderator. The obvious compromise o 2 moderators conducting 2 1/2 debates of 97 1/2 minutes long is largely thought to be unworkable as half a debate is usually known as a speech and God knows we've heard enough of those. If these guys communicated any less, they could qualify as Wharf mimes. They better get together soon, or there won't be any debates at all, and then no one wins, except of course, we, the people.Humanitarian that he is, Will Durst says "may the best scam win."
