Durst: Disney Boycott

The Southern Baptist Convention has called for a boycott of the Disney Corporation because of their treatment of gays. Are they protesting Disney's dismal record of prejudice in employing homosexuals? Noo. Are they making a progressive statement about equality? Nooo. Is it an election year cheap shot picking on a group of people the Convention is convinced they won't ever have to answer to? Yes. Their gripe is that Disney is providing health benefits to partners of gay employees. The chutzpah! What kind of fiendish despotic villains would stoop to treating gay employees as humans? Who knows where this morally outrageous depravity might lead? Christian co-existence is my guess. These Baptists have got to be the people who put the hole in Holier Than Thou. And of course they made this pious pronouncement from this year's convention headquarters in New Orleans, Louisiana; long known as the home of discretion and circumspection. And still they don't cancel their year 2000 Convention site in Orlando, Florida at Disney World. Of course the high hypocrisy hat has to go to the Reverend Wiley Drake of Southern California who has thrown his lot in with the Baptists even though he's vowed to keep his dozen family passes to Disneyland. "I'm not going to throw them away, they cost too much money." Nice to know good ol' American principles don't quite rate an E ticket. The Mouse wins again.
