What a McCain Victory Could Mean: No Money for Health Care and the End of Our Volunteer Army

By Robert Parry, Consortium News. Posted August 28, 2008.

The price tag for John McCain's war lust would mean virtually every other national priority would be short-changed or neglected.

In judging the shape of a future John McCain presidency, there are already plenty of dots that are easy to connect. They reveal an image of a war-like Empire so full of hubris that it could take the world into a cascade of crises, while extinguishing what is left of the noble American Republic.

McCain has made clear he would continue and even escalate George W. Bush's open-ended global war on Islamic radicals. McCain buys into the neoconservative vision of expending U.S. treasure and troops to kill as many Muslim militants as possible.

McCain's tough talk -- for instance, his joking about "bomb, bomb Iran" and his vow to pursue Osama bin Laden "to the gates of hell" -- is indistinguishable from Bush's "bring 'em on," "smoke 'em out," "dead or alive" rhetoric.

Beyond the words, McCain's global war strategy is as hawkish, if not more so, than Bush's. In late 2001 and early 2002, McCain took the lead in pushing the neocon plan of a rapid pivot from the invasion of Afghanistan toward the prospective invasion of Iraq.

Even before the Taliban had been thoroughly defeated -- and as the Bush administration was failing to chase bin Laden to the gates of Tora Bora or to the gates of northwest Pakistan -- McCain was advocating a diversion of U.S. intelligence and military assets toward Iraq's Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with 9/11.

That premature pivot from Afghanistan to Iraq may go down as one of the worst national security blunders in the history of the United States. It has bogged the U.S. military down in two indefinite wars while fueling anti-Americanism around the world and especially among the billion-plus Muslims.

Yet, McCain and his neocon allies have never acknowledged this serious error of judgment, nor has the mainstream U.S. news media demanded that McCain accept responsibility for this catastrophic mistake.

McCain instead gets away with boasting about the supposed success of the recent U.S. troop "surge" in Iraq. (Meanwhile, Big Media stars -- many of whom backed the Iraq invasion in 2003 -- hammer Barack Obama for refusing to accept the conventional wisdom about the "successful surge," as Obama tries to offer a more nuanced analysis.)

So, as the U.S. press corps again gives cover to the Iraq War, the larger failure of U.S. policy goes substantially unaddressed.

Not only did the McCain/Bush/neocon strategy allow bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders to survive and reestablish themselves along the Pakistani-Afghan border, the policy let the Taliban exploit instability in Afghanistan to rebuild its forces and begin going on the offensive against hard-pressed U.S. and NATO troops.

Potentially even worse, the Bush-McCain-neocon neglect of Afghanistan has contributed to worsening instability in nuclear-armed Pakistan, where the Taliban and al-Qaeda are expanding safe havens and increasing influence.

In other words, while Bush and McCain rushed off to war against Iraq over the distant possibility that Iraq might some day have the capacity to build a nuclear bomb, they allowed disorder to spread in Pakistan, a country that already possesses nuclear weapons.

Future Draft?

Another casualty of McCain's endless Middle East wars, which soon could include Iran, would almost surely be America's volunteer army. Though McCain officially opposes a restoration of the draft, it is nearly impossible to envision how his multiple wars could be waged without one.

And McCain also had made clear that he favors a neo-Cold War confrontation with Moscow over another part of the neocon agenda -- the encircling of Russia with pro-U.S. regimes and the placement of strategic missile systems near Russia's borders.

The fencing in of Russia fits with the goals of the neocon Project for the New American Century that envisions an endless era of U.S. military dominance that tolerates no potential rivals, whether an emerging China or a resurgent Russia. The recent Russian-Georgian conflict underscores the risks from this neocon concept.

Containing Russia in this way ultimately would require dangerous brinkmanship. And the McCain/neocon belligerence -- like McCain's melodramatic declaration "we are all Georgians" -- would guarantee that one of these swaggering showdowns eventually would push the world to the brink of a nuclear confrontation.

From the perspective of U.S. taxpayers, the neocon strategy of permanent global dominance means funding the military-industrial complex at levels never before seen, especially when one factors in the simultaneous costs of the "war on terror," the Iraq War, the Afghan War and a possible Iran War.

The combined price tag for McCain's military adventures, at a time when the federal government is already running about half a trillion dollars in debt, would mean that virtually every other national priority would have to be short-changed or neglected.

There will be little money left to address the energy crisis, global warming, retooling the auto industry, health care, Social Security, education, infrastructure repairs, etc., etc.

Plus, as the United States solidifies itself under President McCain as a militaristic Empire, the remnants of the old Republic would inevitably be swept away.

Already, McCain has vowed to appoint more U.S. Supreme Court justices in the style of Samuel Alito and John Roberts, open advocates of an imperial presidency.

Currently, the Supreme Court has a slim 5-4 majority in favor of maintaining some limits on the President's power. But one more vacancy from the moderate majority -- to be filled by President McCain -- would mean that a right-wing Supreme Court would begin reinterpreting the U.S. Constitution to grant the President unlimited powers in wartime.

And since wartime would never end, the Founders' vision of a Republic -- with "checks and balances" and all people possessing "unalienable rights" -- would be negated by an all-powerful President who could do whatever he wished to anyone who got in the way.

In many ways, a McCain presidency would represent the logical culmination of America's failure to heed President Dwight Eisenhower's parting warning about the growing power of "the military-industrial complex."

The American people also would show that they had turned their back on another warning from another aging leader, Benjamin Franklin, who cautioned at the end of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 that the Founders had created a Republic, "if you can keep it."

Not since 1932 has the dire need to go in a new direction been as painfully obvious as it is in this politcal year. And yet (AND YET???) the two candidates (McCain and Obama - just in case it has slipped your mind) are in a virtual dead heat.

What the hell is wrong with this picture?

What we have here dear people is a textbook example of the jaw-dropping stupidity of the American people.

Think about it for a minute or two. How the hell is it going to look to the rest of the world if we reject a brilliant, vigorous statesman who has gained the respect and admiration of the entire planet over a senil old bobblehead. Seriously, we're gonna look like a nation chock full o' nuts, facists and racists, don'cha think?

As was the case three quarters of a century ago when the people wisely send a disabled son of privilage named Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the White House, Barack Obama promises to be a VERY different and refreshing kind of president.

John MaCain is not the type of leader the times demand. Barck Obama is. Can it be more painfully obvious than that?

Wake up America....Then again, I'm kind of preachin' to the choir here on AlerNet, aren't I?

Cheers!

John McCain Needs To Answer One Question

The Republican party of 2000 picked Bush over YOU for the general election. Assuming 20/20 hindsight does not apply, why does this prove the competence of the majority of Republicans NOW? The majority of Republicans are 8 years older, how are they 8 years wiser? The majority of voters, one might say a SUPERMAJORITY, agree that George W. Bush is the worst president they've ever known, possibly for all time. Why should we trust an egregiously incompetent Republican party to pick a good man, since their recent outings have consistently reaffirmed their inability to identify a DEFINITION of "a good man". Pick any one of these questions. Get Cindy to help you. Have a beer. Hire another foreign lobbyist.

PS: For new AlterNet visitors, Scotty was banned from Alternet on Saturday by Joshua Holland for calling him a "condescending a--hole."

Wow, I didn't know that! Can't say I'm suprised though. The Alternet cop hasn't been getting his way lately on the immigration debate here, so he was probably looking for someone to smite.

Although I did find "scotty" a bit annoying for pushing his blog all the time, I do think he's right about McCain. I'm awfully curious what McCain will say at his little convention thing...what can that guy possibly SAY? "I promise not to suck quite as much as Bush even though I don't know much about economics?" I mean REALLY. WHY is McCain in a tie race with Obama? Are Americans really that whacked? Can we stand another 4 years of mayhem? Is America going to vote in favor of another 4 years worth of murder, terrorism, oil-stealing, and economic decay?

When all the "hardworking, white, blue-collar collar workers in places like Pennsylvania and Ohio vote for MCain and against their own best interests because of racism (carefully coded by using the words "lack of experience") and there is "... little money left to address the energy crisis, global warming, retooling the auto industry, health care, Social Security, education, infrastructure repairs, etc., etc." I suggest that when there is no money to feed their hungry children, they pass around a bowl of self-defeating racial hatred and see how fast tummies fill up on that diet. When they go to fill their tanks with enough gas to get to work or to the doctor's office, I suggest they fill that tank with good old "McCain experience" and see how many miles they can get on that fuel.

Nothing like being forced to eat your own vote, which is what the average Joe Republicans have had to do for the last 8 years. Unfortunately they seem too stupid to see it and are willing to make the same mistake again over something as minor as the color of a person's skin.

Disclaimer: The following is a comment I left after finding a "Semper-Fi-Tom" comment following a different Alternet article.

It appears we're in for more saturation marketing by/for "scotty" to promote his web site. I have an impression he's in it for his own self gratification (gotta get those “hit” numbers up!); mccain is just the vehicle... which is unfortunate, since I hate to think what this nation will become if mccain even gets his foot in the door of the white house long enough for four more years of republican rule.

As far as someone new duplicating “scotty’s” tactics, I have a few suspicions (especially considering the similarity in writing style). As far as I can tell, Alternet has a loophole whereby ANYONE could have multiple sign-ins – all you need are multiple email addresses (I made certain of this, I just created a new one for myself – which I have no intention of using or abusing.

For anyone who thinks to call me on this - I forgot which persona I was signed in on, and used the new one by mistake.

McCain should be toast by now and isn't!

This clown prince is joined at the hip with the most craven criminal in U.S. history and will perpetuate 4 more years of Bush crimes without recourse. That is a given to all but the feckless Dipocrits and the two most incompetent "leaders" in their history, i.e. Pelosi and Reid. Had Bush been assailed and impeached following the November, '06 elections there would be no Bush, no Cheney, no Rice, no Mukasy, no Rove, no Corsi and damned sure no McCain!. But no.....all of that is off the table and that sordid array is running even with or ahead of Obamarama/Biden in the polls. Will someone tell me what the hell is going on? This should be a slam dunk with any suggestion of McCain evoking only the AFLAC duck's arghhhh. Wake up America and make some demands for accountability, purpose and hope. It begins with storming the campaign offices of all Dipocrits seeking election in November and promising to kick their collective asses if they do not restore governance of, by and for the people. There has never been a good Republican and there never will be one. If the Dipocrits can't get that through their noggins then it is time to look in the direction of Cynthia McKinney and others. Sad but true dear friends!

Free Universal Health Care is Completely Affordable
Posted by: opmoc on Aug 28, 2008 5:04 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
World War II completely devastated the UK economy. After it was over we were almost completely bankrupt and many of our towns and cities had been bombed to hell.

Yet in 1948, the National Health Service was started by the Labour Government which provided totally free health care for all. It worked exceptionally well. When I was a child the standard of health care was far superior to what it is now.

The arguments against Free Healthcare are completely obscene in a rich developed society.

The massive financial bureaucracies profitting on people's illnesses - simply have to be dismantled - or rather bypassed.

A US National Health Service would simply make them redundant.

Why pay when you can get better care for free?

The former employees made redundant from their desk bound office jobs could be retrained to do something useful - like rebuilding crumbling infrastructure. The exercise would do them good, make them feel better about themselves, and they would probably lead much longer and happier lives.

for a generation of young people. Think about it: a whole cohort of young men and women will go through the fitness and character-building routines of the military, something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Ex-military guys always have that extra-special bearing: people can tell they know how to carry themselves. A draft will do more than any of the trillions that would be thrown at the health system and crime fighting measures. Keep em fit, keep em busy: that's how you raise a generation of young people.

I would recommend if you have a young son or daughter to get them to start working towards 10 mile a day runs, and alternate weight days.

McCain is using this rhetoric because that's all he has as his base. He is a War President like Dubha-Yah Bush. So I am of course naturally suspicious as anyone else should be of him. However, I am not going to give unwavering support to the Democrat Obama just because he is the opposite party, both are owned by the same people. However, the Libertarian Party is the way to Go!

Nothing much is going to change if either Obama or Mccain is president. Bush is already crashing the country into the brick wall at 90 mph. Mccain will do it again at 95 mph, Obama at 85 mph. Nader, on the other hand, will actually change direction and avoid that wall. Any questions?

After everything that the Neocon led Whitehouse has done over the last 7 plus years, we still have a nation divided nearly 50/50 over who will be our next President. This is beyond stupid. I don't have the words to express my frustration and bewilderment over how ANYONE can still believe these guys. I'm being polite when I say "guys". The only other thought I have for the American people that comes to mind, is a quote from the Bible that the Neocons don't read, and it is, "When the blind lead the blind, they both fall into the ditch". So, IF America chooses McCain, America will deserve EVERYTHING that happens to it.
P.S. To everyone who reads Alternet.org, prepare for the worst, because the worst is probably what America will choose, since they have done so consistently for the last 7 plus years.

Mac being a Vindictive Hero?

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Granted Mac's 'public service' history has been questionable, but his temper is a known quanitity.
Seems Mac can't goosestep his way out of shit.
He's dragged out & flaunted Phil, Lindsay et al.
He has played the POW card so often other military personnel are scremaing 'Foul!'
He has no concern about saying outrageous things (100 yrs in Iraq) or showing his confusion (Sunnis,Shia, insurgents...Czech republic)
he clearly stated his desire to be Pres was motivated by pure ambition-not duty or vision.
So has admitted his ego steers his decisions.Think being kneecapped by Cheneycorp in '00 might have pissed him off, Might have invoked his Vindictive side, his desire for revenge?
think about it, if Mac intentionally throws the election to Obama, Who'd be screwed? Cheneycorp.
Maybe John is working on rebuilding his image as a National hero by jumping on the garnade. His image and legacy are far more important to him then a title.
God knows he has been willing to drag out every scum bag affiliated with this admin and Corp Corruption, even their sociopathic 'Religious leaders'.
If Mac's goal is to lose this election, he's doing a great job!If he 'wins' it will be a clear signal the election was rigged.the masses will be hitting the streets, thus also facilitating a Change from an Uprising.
Maybe John is truely putting 'country first' by screwing CheneyCorp, and reaping the satisfaction of serving His dish of Revenge cold. His Ego may be serving the Nations (and Worlds) common good- intentionally or unintentionally.
Now all he has to do is name some lameass VP pick, and suddenly fall 'ill' in Oct.And will have Served this Country with Honor & distinction!
Now that would be a hero worth admiring

Those old stand-bys just won't go away. They will be faithful to their 'party' and vote for McCain. No doubt about it. I just hope there aren't too many of them. I've know these people and they don't cave in. They listen to their gas bags on the radio and do what they're told. It's a cult mentality and tough to crack. Maybe they'll drift across the aisle a few at a time. Here's hoping. ANNA

Those people that come to this website already know and have known since 2000, that the current MAFIA thugs in charge are a lying, incompetent, greedy, imperial driven bunch of pretenders. John McCain would have us to continue down that same path because he doesn't have the vision or the heart not to. If the nomination of someone to the highest office in this country is supposed to represent the not just the values, but the spirit of this country, then what does it really say about the repugnicans during these last 8 years, and the prospect of another 4 of McSame.

At this time in history where this country is faced with unprecedented issues: healthcare crises, mortgage meltdowns, a run amok financial sector, stagnant wages, environmental crises, etc. I would venture to say that those people voting for McSame are traitors! Because you can not tell me that when there are all of these issues that need to be confronted, what we really NEED in office is some doddering geezer, that doesn't have a clue and his only cause is a military solution to "LEAD" this country into another direction (Iran)!

This isn't just about what the rest of the "world" thinks about us, this is about how we think of ourselves! The elephant in the room is how important is it that the country has to be run by a bad tempered, decrepit, militaristic white guy before you will put a man of vision and intelligence because he is an articulant African-American male! If your deep seated fear is that this man would do more for other African-Americans, then you should have listened when he said a rising tide lifts ALL boats! And the current white men in charge haven't done anything for the bottom 90% of white people so why not take a chance for a change!

... one hell of a lot more death. It will mean more death in the literal sense and more death of the human spirit, as well.

McCain's triumph will mean right wing religion and right wing business will gain ever more control over the USA. The Scalias of this country along with the O'Reillys and the Hannitys will spread their invective and their hatred of ALL things, of ALL thoughts and ideas.

Reality and human values and life will further diminish, not only here in America, but throughout the world. This kind of hatred spreads. It is highly contagious, like a virulent disease.

As Scahill the writer says, this whole thing is going to be outsourced to the private sector anyway. Already most of the people in theatre are working for private contractors. That's what cowards who don't want the draft get: they get their wars outsourced. Nice and clean and swept under the carpet, a giant can of Grade A air freshener to spray away the smell of cordite and death. The kids stay fat and disconnected, the lawyers are kept happy. You do get a choice however: the future can be orange-cinnamon-sunrise or mint-memories-passionfield-folly.

The "all volunteer" army should be done away with

First, let's face the fact: the "all volunteer" military is nothing more than a poverty draft. Pitting a teenager brainwashed by US public schools against a professional military recruiter/salesman is no match.

Sorry, I hate to say it, but I'm with Charles Rangel on this one; the logic is so strong it screams.

* If we had a draft we would not be fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan -- those wars would have already ended.

Would the sons of the wealthy and politically-connected get out of fighting wars? Just ask George Bush -- of course they would.

But fighting a war with a conscript army would consistently put millions of people in the street protesting unpopular wars.

Conscripts would also tend to reject militarism more -- the "volunteer" GIs are constantly told that they volunteered for the military and this effective argument shuts them up.

Don't like the idea of you or your friends/relatives being forced into the military? Good -- but I bet one result would be better conditions in the military.

If we think that the military is so important to our "national security", then this burden should be shared by all citizens.

If we do not think the military is that important, then a draft would push us towards a smaller standing army or -- hey, I can dream -- eliminating the standing army altogether.

The Republicans will just run us into the ground faster, that's all. Neither Party does what they say they will. So I guess we're stuck choosing between a turd sandwich and a giant douche...again.
Each Party serves the same master....The Wealthy. I don't mean the poor schmucks that make one or two million a year. I'm talking about the jokers whose asses they kiss to get ahead.
This government helps the people that don't need it,while stomping on the very people that do need the help. Until we start making them do their job right,it won't matter who's in the oval office,we'll keep getting trickled on
and the poor will keep getting blamed for uncontrolled greed and them not being able to get that new $10,000 nightstand.

HERE''S SOME FACTS FOR YOU

First - the americans people should stop living by 30 second sound bites these things are designed specifically to sell you something. The MSM is not the same as freedom of the press,so they should'nt believe everthing they see on television; POLLS for example.

Second - John McCain don't need to answer the question as why we should trust the republican party to pick a "GOOD MAN" ,its the american people that should answer the question as to why they would vote for anyone that would call themselves a republician . Just the thought that Carl Rove could be envolved with the McCain campaign makes it hard for me keep anything in my stomach. The damage that this man has cause our government there no doubt that he should be in jail. This mutant with just a high school diploma is considered a politicial genius and GWB brain should be enough for any thinking person to say NO more republicians.

Third - It a shame that half of this country would rather vote for John McCain and the republicians before they would vote for Black man.

Fourth- Mr Obama is a educated wise young man that will serve this country well. Come November we will know if america is to survivd or to be a witness her destruction; it is just that simple.

Both parties should be thrown into the dustbin of history

* Obama’s first major move was the appointment of Jason Furman, a Wall Street insider known for his pro-market views, as economic policy director.

* This was followed by his denunciation of the Supreme Court decision outlawing the execution of people convicted of child rape, and his nod to the pro-gun lobby regarding the court’s decision to strike down Washington, DC’s gun control law.

* In late June and July he embarked on a “Patriotism Tour” to identify his campaign with US militarism, while continuing to back away from his primary campaign pledge to withdraw US combat forces from Iraq based on a definite timetable.

* This was followed by a pledge to substantially expand the Bush administration’s program providing federal funding to so-called “faith-based” service organizations.

* On July 10, Obama voted in the Senate to expand warrantless wiretapping and provide immunity to telecommunications companies that facilitated the White House’s illegal domestic spying operation.

* During his tour of Iraq, Afghanistan and Europe, Obama made clear that his call for withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq was linked to his proposal to dispatch as many as 10,000 troops to Afghanistan to escalate the war and even expand it into Pakistan. At the same time, he praised the results of Bush’s “surge” and made clear that he would leave sufficient US troops in Iraq to maintain a long-term occupation of the country.

* Most recently, Obama joined with Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain in threatening Russia and calling for retribution for its intervention against the US client regime in Georgia. He has supported Bush’s military provocations, including the establishment of a permanent US military presence in Poland.

From here:

Here's a quote from Paul Street that we should heed:

Our current corporate-totalitarian system and political culture doesn't work. It is a grave threat to human survival and peace and justice at home and abroad. Dr. King was right forty years ago about the pressing need for "radical reconstruction" and the "radical distribution of political and economic power." The path of that reconstruction is long and leads well past my own time on this planet, but it is at least clear to me that millions of people in the world's most powerful nation are being dangerously hypnotized and repressively de-sublimated yet again by the false hopes and colored lights of the narrow-spectrum corporate-crafted election extravaganza.

If Obama loses, and he may, it will be important for progressively inclined citizens and activists to understand that it was corporate-imperial centrism, not the left and not the People, that got defeated. If he wins, those citizens and activists need to understand the severe limits of what triumphed and be prepared to fight and organize on a daily basis beneath and beyond presidential elections.

would be much worse than obama regarding the Russian issue, after listening to Biden speak last night. Twice in his speech he stressed the need to stand against what he called Russian aggression (I can't remember the exact words) and stand up for, and support the young democracy, Georgia. He spoke as though (just like the MSM) Russia just attacked them out of the blue.

Now I find this extremely disturbing. I already know, from reading articles on informationclearinghouse.com (an EXCELLENT site), that the press has totally lied to us on this one, framing the story as though Russia just attacked poor innocent li'l 'ol Georgia for no reason other than imperialism. Now Biden is doing the same as the press, and in my view is setting us up for possibility military aggression towards Russia.

For those that don't know, Russia has been acting as peace-keepers in South Ossetia to protect them from Georgia, who wants them annexed. Well, Georgia's neo-conservative government brutally attacked the South Ossetians, killing Russian soldiers along the way and of course Russia responded. Biden knows exactly what happened over there as he is the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, but he's deceiving the public on this one.

So now we have a vice presidential candidate who is spreading lies to fulfill some hidden, dishonest agenda. Yes, mccain is scary as hell, much more than Obama/Biden, but the truth is neither party stands for peace.

And people wonder why so many of us are wanting to go third party...

Why? Because women have demonstrated that they can serve in all branches and as all ranks of the military. A new conscripted army would be 50% female or every civil rights law since 1964 would be overturned. You pays your money and makes your choice.

The new puppet will do what ever it is told. How many trillions of dollars have we spent on the war dept and to the fasci-corp death contractors? When I mean spent, I mean the amount of our personal labor that we expend everyday that is taken from us (without a peep of course) to engorge this pyscho-pathic cystem we are enslaved in. Only the rich have rights, slaves have none. The saddest part of this is that most folks don't even know they are slaves. nuero-lingusitic programming-modern sigilistic sorcery starts at our birth and accelerates once we enter the compulsory indoctrination camps(schools-the true parents of our children). Why do you think its mandatory for all children to go to school and follow the cystems curriculm, to be obedient worker slaves for the corp-fasci government oligarchs. the point appears to be made. definition of government- (govern-to control), (ment-mind). TO CONTROL OUR MINDS.

Too bad we didn't keep the draft when we had it. Bush would have never gotten this far with his carnage if college-age students and their parents had had a personal involvement in this murderous lunacy.

Will the Republican's convention have that same elan as the Democrats next week? Probably not. It's hard for the R's to rally 'round their "maverick", because he really wasn't their man for the moment.
His coronation might be greeted with muted voices. The R's know he's not a glamour guy; rather he looks old, worn down and seemingly void of zest that his opponent has.
But nevertheless the U.S.A. cannot afford to remain on the disastrous course the R's have led us on the past 20 years. If any Yank out there in Red, White and Blue land thinks otherwise, we're living in a fantasy world of our own.
Let's face it; the only way he can win is to scare the crap out of us by saying "more terrorists threats to come", or "we must stand up to (insert emeny name here)", but these pretenses are hollow and are as old as the Sphinx. Fear can only take you so far.
Lastly, Americans need to do something about its schools, its judicial system (of meting out punishment for crimes), its crumbling infrastructure, its bloated military budget; and finally, to have a society like in Scandinavia or New Zealand. Our current way of living isn't working anymore.
Too many of us are unemployed; and we can't eat war materiel for breakfast. Think about it.

Posted by: Garvagh on Aug 28, 2008 3:07 PM

McCain's chief adviser on foreign policy, Randy Scheunemann, advocates an imperial America able to intimidate or defeat any "enemy" - - meaning any country seriously challenging the Israeli-centric foreign policy of the neocons. Ironically, this "strategy" puts Israels own security at risk, needlessly.

Achieving stability in Afghanistan can be accomplished only through economic development that must of necessity include Iran. McCain talks about attacking Iran! Why? Because Iran insists that Israel provide minimum justice for the Palestinians.

What four more years of war will cost:
Posted by: PaulK on Aug 28, 2008 3:38 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
We've already had six years of war, estimated in total costs (we haven't taken care of the vets yet, for example) at 4.2 trillion dollars. Four more years of war might be another 3 trillion.

That divided by 75 million U.S. families comes out to a $40k additional mortgage on one of your seven or eight houses.

You might say, I don't have a house to put a mortgage on, nyahh nyahh. The government doesn't work that way. You could pay by foregoing one additional college education. Or you could kiss off your social security check. Or your life savings could shrink to nothing through inflation. Or you could need a life-saving operation but the operation costs too much. How about paying a price of one job, yours. Or you could be a draftee. Furthermore, you could always pay double for some other family's share. America works that way sometimes. Would all this float your boat?

"And McCain also had made clear that he favors a neo-Cold War confrontation with Moscow over another part of the neocon agenda -- the encircling of Russia with pro-U.S. regimes and the placement of strategic missile systems near Russia's borders."

The cold war never ended, Russia merely withdrew and regrouped. Now it's back to game on and we're about to be neck deep in it all over again.

Why shouldn't the U.S. encircle its greatest geopolitical and cultural enemy with pro-U.S. states?
