WASHINGTON - The U.S. military recorded 2,688 cases of sexual assault involving its staff last year, 60 percent of which were allegations of rape, a Department of Defense report said Friday.

The majority of the cases -- 72 percent -- involved military victims, the report covering the period from October 2006 to September 2007 said.

Investigations resulted in 181 courts martial, while 201 cases resulted in non-judicial punishment and 218 cases led to administrative action or discharges.

Some 1,040 completed probes resulted in no action, either due to insufficient evidence or because those responsible were civilians, foreigners or unidentified.

A total of 112 reports of sexual assault were reported among forces serving in Iraq, and 19 cases among those serving in Afghanistan.

Among complaints by military staff, where the alleged victim agreed to an outside criminal investigation, 868 (57 percent) reported rape, 91 forcible sodomy -- defined as anal or oral sex -- and 551 indecent assault.

Of the 705 cases where victims asked to remain anonymous and for no further action to be taken, 489 (69 percent) involved rape, 39 alleged forcible sodomy and 125 indecent assault.

The report also recorded allegations by civilians against members of the military. Of a total of 574 cases reported last year, 391 involved rape, 33 forcible sodomy and 150 indecent assault.

Direct comparisons cannot be made with last year's figures because the department has since changed the reporting period from the calendar year to the fiscal year. However, the report notes the figures have remained broadly stable.

"The Department of Defense remains committed to eliminating sexual assault from military service," it said, citing a "robust" prevention and response policy, improved reporting procedures, better training and increased care provision.

A Department of Defense survey also released Friday revealed that 34 percent of women on active duty and six percent of men have experienced sexual harrassment, while 6.8 percent of women and 1.8 percent of men experienced unwanted sexual contact.

The problem was more widespread among women serving in the army, as was the problem of sexual discrimination, while unwanted sexual advances among men were more common in the navy, the 2006 gender relations survey reveals.

The majority of respondents who said they had had unwanted sexual contact did not report it, mainly because they felt uncomfortable doing so.

However, the vast majority were aware of complaint procedures and most expected reports of sexual harassment to be taken seriously. Some 93 percent also said they had received training on the subject in the past year.

Considering some stats suggest that 25% of women in the US will be victims of sexual assault, this number reported by the military seems VERY low.

I'll bet in the military it is even more underreported than normally.

When are we to grapple with the fact that Conquest, Invasion and Occupation of Others always carries that fundamental and un-controllable Wish: to Spread the Seed?

Bush II just says: "but look at our success! what is being born is this 'young democracy'"! Condie Rice, she just looks the other way...

In this assault on Iraq it exists in bold relief, just as in this country it exists in more attenuated and diluted forms.

That guy on Fox News a while ago blurted it out and it made up all of about two days of coverage: "go out and make more babies"!! I don't recall his name, but he was 'white' and was talking about immigration I believe....

Women, you have a lot of careful, serious work to do. But please, please, please, don't present me with the thinking of Phyllis Schlafly or Cheney's wife or the Clare Booth Luce think tanks!!

Forcible assaults are beyond disgust, whatever the context.

But for all my life and even now as I'm closer to the end of my life-cycle, I've been waiting for the birth of a 'young democracy' HERE. Let's not think that an accumulation of weaponry and technology and surplus doses of testosterone (natural and provided) guarantees the proposition that we are somehow more 'civilized' than others. When "Pride goeth before the Fall", what goeth after Arrogance, especially that Cheney-Bush variety?

Keep on keepin' on, women. The assaults on these women mentioned is but another sign that there's a long, long way to go in becoming human.

Sexual abuse is an inherent problem

Sexual/physical/mental abuse are endemic qualities of the dysfunctional, of which it would appear we have many member malcontents in any profession, especially in controlling positions. In the context of current military politics and it's ever lowering bar standard for entry, the original vanguard qualities that were desireable in our grunts especially with the current crop of wishy washy psych tests. Certain qualities in our operatives are shall we say more than desireable, as our trauma rate both physical and psychological is beyongd contempatble.
I would like to think that this issue would not be cuckolded by our well funded feminist brethren as an exclusive female only problem but that would be the leaning of the argument. (Sorry you silent guys out there fed and tax dollars only for females.)
Stuck in a fox hole with a ner do well who gets a hard on by whizzing bullets and loud bangs is not fun, especially when a self gratifying relief buzz is required. In the confines and limited social intercourse of army life, nature calls for our more progressive exploiters are ready available. What I do assure you is yes much is underreported, and it is by a majority the silent male. Sodomy without ever seeing your attackers, especially our nonchalent virgins can be quite interesting in the trauma results. It is a very good socializing power game for your less savoury characters.
