Iraq Vets: 'Racism Endemic; Comes from the Top of Command Chain' (VIDEO)

By Joshua Holland, AlterNet. Posted March 17, 2008.

Vets from Iraq and Afghanistan tell their stories. (With a guide to AlterNet's comprehensive Winter Soldier coverage.)

At its core, the "War on Terror" is inherently racist. Its central tenet is that all Muslims are interchangeable.

To a significant degree, the invasion of Iraq was sold on that premise. At the time of the invasion, a majority of Americans thought Saddam Hussein was behind the attacks of 9/11 (a third still believe that, as did 90 percent of soldiers deployed in Iraq in 2006, according to a Zogby poll). Only a populace that thinks all Arabs are the same could be convinced that it was possible to avenge Osama Bin Laden's attack -- carried out mostly by Saudis and Egyptians -- by invading Iraq.

There probably isn't a single American who would link an IRA bombing in Belfast with an abortion clinic bombing in Birmingham, despite the fact that both are the actions of Christian extremists who justify violence against civilians in the name of religious affinity. In the 1970s and 1980s, Europe had a dozen terrorist groups, all with vaguely similar grievances and with some minor contacts between them. Nobody ever suggested that those groups were parts of a cohesive entity that was waging a war on Western civilization.

But our response to the attacks of 9/11 was, and continues to be, built on the premise that disparate conflicts in predominantly Muslim countries are part and parcel of the same global struggle. Palestinian militants and fundamentalist tribesman in Pakistan's hinterlands and Abu Sayyaf rebels in the Philippines and Algeria's GIA are stripped of history and context and offered by Bush and his supporters as a collective justification for launching a global war in response to a single, if stunning, terror attack.

The reality is that they're conflating a series of independent conflicts, including many that have nothing to do with the United States. Dangerously, that plays right into Osama Bin Laden's preferred narrative of a grand Clash of Civilizations, as far-flung Islamic extremist groups have indeed found value in allying themselves with Bin Laden's "global jihad" since the launch of Bush's terror war.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, racism is operationalized -- it's endemic to the culture of occupation, and, worse still, it comes from the top of the chain of command and works its way down the line. It's used to devalue and dehumanize the populations of occupied lands, and to motivate soldiers to overcome their natural inhibitions against cruelty.

In the window to your right is a brief but powerful video of testimony given during the Winter Soldier Hearings in Washington, D.C., on March 15 by veterans of the Iraq conflict. The Winter Soldier hearings are a project of Iraq Veterans Against the War -- you can support IVAW's work here.

Obama should see this

Barack Obama needs to really HEAR these soldiers stories and perhaps he will think twice about leaving troops behind. These young men are the true heroes and for them to have to suffer life-long adverse effects is a travesty. We are letting this country slip away from us and I am not so sure any candidate will have the courage to do what needs to be done. I believe those candidates have already been passed over. It becomes harder and harder to justify why it is "great to be an American."

I have tears streaming down my face from watching this video; what we have done to our troops, what we have done to the Iraqi and Afganistani people. I am ashamed. And I thank God that my sons and my nieces and nephews are not old enough to even have a chance to have to witness what these courageous young men have had to witness and will see in their minds eyes for the rest of their lives. Thank you Alternet for providing coverage of Winter Soldier. Although I wanted to, I could not be there myself to show my support.

I appreciate all the work you are doing Josh, but we don't care about what is going on in Iraq or what happens to our soldiers.

Americans are against this war only because it hasn't gone well.

Most of us still believe that Vietnam war (crimes) was justified, and that "politician" lost that war.

Only a draft would change our attitude towards this and any upcoming wars.

KPFA Radio has collaborated with Iraq Veterans Against the War to archive all the testimonials of the veterans who spoke at the Winter Soldier gathering, on their website warcomeshome.org. It also features biographies of the veterans, photos of the event, and comments from veterans and the public, among other features. KPFA/Pacifica Radio was the only media outlet to cover the event in full.

Look at what

Heartless, merciless, cowardly criminals, "men" who NEVER faced an armed enemy, "men" who evaded military service or deserted from it, have done to our military forces, and for WHAT? More oil? More wealth? More power? Just for fun? We KNOW this criminal regime is guilty of multiple capital crimes, yet continue to enable them, either through inaction, indifference, or both. At what point will we rise up and say something like: "That's it; you're under arrest"? When the goons are goose-stepping down Main Street? When protesters begin disappearing? This is where it's all heading folks. Our continued inaction in the hope that somehow everything will magically turn out all right amounts to national suicide.

AlterNet continues to push the government myth of 9/11
Posted by: LeftWright on Mar 17, 2008 12:59 PM

Mr. Holland -

Why do you insist on asserting as fact something that has no evidence to support it?

After 6 1/2 years the government still has not provided any credible evidence to support its theory that Osama bin Laden and 19 Arab/Muslim hijackers conspired to commit the crimes of 9/11/01. Thus, the government story remains an unproven "conspiracy theory" which, when examined, has absolutely no basis in fact.

The government has yet to provide any credible evidence that there were even "hijackers" on the four planes. Planes which flew off course and undisturbed by NORAD for 100 minutes, I hasten to add.

The government has still not even shown how they identified the planes they claim were involved.

Before you continue to make such unfounded assertions, I would highly recommend reading Dr. David Ray Griffin's latest book: 9/11 Contradictions: An Open Letter to Congress and the Press. Even better, contact him and ask him to write an article based on this book for AlterNet, I'm certain he'd be delighted.

No, I'm not trying to hijack this thread. I think coverage of the Winter Soldier hearings is very important and that these hearings are way overdue and should be held in Congress.

I hope that you and yours are well.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

IRA are not religious extremists

I have to respond to the following statement:

‘There probably isn't a single American who would link an IRA bombing in Belfast with an abortion clinic bombing in Birmingham, despite the fact that both are Christian extremists, and both justify violence against civilians in the name of religious affinity’.

The IRA are not Christian extremists. The IRA bombing campaigns came in response to 800 years of British imperialism, and in particular the events of bloody Sunday 1972 when British troops killed 13 unarmed peaceful civil rights marchers.
Catholics have been discriminated against for hundreds of years, hence civil rights marches.
British troops went into Ireland to ‘protect’ Catholics from Protestant bigotry in 1969, but soon just backed the sectarian Northern Ireland State.
And it is interesting that this is posted alongside the winter soldier, because British soldiers used torture against those fighting British occupation.
One method used was to blindfold a suspect and tie their hands behind their back. Then they were taken up in a helicopter. They would be made to sit in the doorway. The suspect would not know how high they were, but with the copter hovering a few feet above the ground they would be pushed out.
But many of the torture methods used in Iraq were used in Ireland, including killing many nationalists.

The religious bigots who bomb clinics really are just that, whose aim is to terrorize doctors and healthcare workers into not doing their work.

that those who have never experienced war firsthand should never have the capability to send others into harm's way. Bush/Cheney, Wolfowitz, Feith, Rice - all are criminals of the first order and should be subject to international war crimes trials.
