Bush-Cheney Really Are Planning to Attack Iran!

By Jim Hightower, Hightower Lowdown. Posted November 17, 2007.

Bush & Buckshot are riding their little stick horses, demonizing another Muslim nation -- and the Dems are supporting it. We've got to shut them down.

Look out -- here they come again! Bush & Buckshot are riding their little stick horses, waving the bloody flag of 9/11, demonizing another Muslim nation, shouting warnings about weapons of mass destruction, bellowing for regime change, and generally trying to whoop up a new war. Having done so well in Iraq, George W and Cheney are pushing feverishly to hype up a national-security threat and commit our nation, our bedraggled military, our depleted treasury, and our country's already-tarnished name to another of their fantasyland, neocon, preemptive invasions of a sovereign people who are doing no harm to us. Their target this time: Iran.

You might be thinking, oh, come on, Hightower, surely not. You're paranoid -- even the Bushites aren't that crazy. I wish.

The drums of war

For such leading neocon zealots as Norman Podhoretz, bombing and even invading Iran are about protecting "our" Mideastern oil, strengthening Israel's regional power, and continuing Western control of the restive Muslim majority in the Middle East. Podhoretz and other true believers assert that there's an urgent need for Israel and the West to crush Iran's Muslim government now, frantically wailing that it intends to destroy America and control the world. Even though Iran has made no threats to the U.S., the neocons see regime change there as the key to winning "World War IV" (they insist that the Cold War was World War III) against what they have dubbed "Islamofacism."

How nutty are they? Podhoretz concedes that by attacking such an influential Islamic nation, Bush would "unleash a wave of anti-Americanism all over the world that will make the anti-Americanism we've experienced so far look like a lovefest." Yet this Dr. Strangelove maniacally declares, "I pray with all my heart that he will." Now there's a prayer to a truly fiendish god!

George W, who is so besotted by Podhoretz that he has bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on him, has bought into this guy's insanity. Adopting Podhoretz's inflamed doomsday stance, Bush recently accused Iran of preparing for global war (though W only ranks it as WW III), and Bush's bombastic sidekick, Cheney, has now threatened that Tehran will suffer "serious consequences" if it doesn't do what Washington wants. Just as they did in the run-up to their 2003 Iraq attack, the Bushites are now pounding out a drumbeat of propaganda to soften up the public, enlist the compliant media, and cow soft-spined Democratic leaders. You'll recognize some familiar themes (a.k.a. lies) in BushCheney's rationale for a "preventive" war of aggression against Iran:

Claim: Iran is in cahoots with al Qaeda, the demons who crashbombed America on 9/11. Actually, no. Iran is a Shiite nation that has long been in opposition to the Sunni-exclusive Islam preached by al Qaeda. Indeed, even before al Qaeda's attacks on America, Iran's leaders vehemently opposed the terrorist group's presence in neighboring Afghanistan, and Iran was one of the first Muslim countries to condemn the 9/11 assault. Iran also has willingly turned over al Qaeda suspects to the U.S.

Claim: WMDs! Iran is on the brink of making a nuclear bomb, thus posing an imminent threat to America and to our national interests. Not so. Iran has no nuclear weapons and is nowhere near having the ability to build one. As a signer of the Nuclear NonProliferation Treaty, Iran has the right to enrich uranium to make electrical power (something our own country does every day). The Iranian government regularly allows inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency access to its nuclear facilities, and this UN agency (which is the one that turned out to be right about the lack of WMDs in Iraq) has found no evidence that Iran is trying to make a bomb. Even if it were, it would be years away from having one. There certainly is no imminent threat of an Iranian nuclear assault on any country, including our own, which is 7,000 miles away. Plus, Bush's own former top commander in Iraq, Gen. John Abizaid, points out that the U.S. lived with a nuclear Soviet Union throughout the Cold War and now lives with a number of nuclear nations, including China and Pakistan, so "there are ways to live with a nuclear Iran." It's simply a lie that the Bushites must rush to war to keep us from being nuked.

Claim: Those dastardly Iranians are meddling in our war in Iraq by supplying weapons to our enemies and by sending intelligence agents to undermine Iraq's government. Not likely. While some Iranianmade weapons have turned up in Iraq, there've been no findings of a large or regular influx and no evidence that the Iranian government itself is even tacitly behind it. Remember that Iran's leaders are Shiites who do not like al Qaeda and do not support the Sunni insurgency, so the only Iraqi force that Tehran would want to help is the Shiite majority that Bush himself has put in charge. As for Iranian "operatives" in Iraq, the two countries share long familial and cultural relationships, so there are a lot of Iranians in Iraq all the time. In fact, Iraq's Shiite-led government is pro-Iranian and has many economic and even military agreements with Tehran. Indeed, when U.S. troops "captured" a group of Iranians in a Baghdad hotel this summer, they turned out to be energy experts invited to Iraq by Prime Minister Maliki, who had them released.

On the warpath

Not that Iran's military/political/ theocratic leaders are a bunch of sweethearts, by any means. That country's loudmouth, Holocaust-denying president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, makes himself an easy target for Bushite demonization, and all peace-seeking governments must be vigilant toward Iran's potential for belligerence. This requires steady engagement, smart diplomacy, military subtlety, and careful consideration of the complexities embodied within Iran's rich, proud, 6,000-year-old culture.

Unfortunately, BushCheney doesn't do engagement, diplomacy, subtlety, or complexity. If there's an international need to shell a pecan, the Bushites go at it with a sledgehammer, blissfully ignorant of their own ignorance. Do you think, for example, that George W is even aware that President Ahmadinejad can rant and rave all he wants, but he is not in charge of his country's foreign policy, which is in the firm grip of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei?

But realities did not deter Bush and the neocons from miring our country in Iraq, and now they are aggressively putting us on a path to war with Iran.

  • In August, Bush announced, "I have authorized our military commanders in Iraq to confront Teheran's murderous activities."

  • Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh revealed last month that Cheney has instructed the Joint Chiefs of Staff to draw up plans for attacking Iran.

  • Hersh added that the bombing would be accompanied by selected "incursions" into Iran by U.S. Special Forces units.

  • The London Telegraph reported in September that the Pentagon has developed a list of some 2,000 bombing targets in Iran.

  • There are plans for both a limited "surgical" bombing of the Iranian military's training sites and a broad bombing that would include nuclear-power facilities and other targets.

  • Two aircraft carriers, a flotilla of U.S. Navy warships, and numerous cruise missiles have been put in place at the Strait of Hormuz, on Iran's southern shore. In fact, half of our navy's warships now sit within striking distance of Iran.

  • The Pentagon has suddenly started building a new U.S. military base near the Iraqi town of Badrah, right up against Iran's border.

  • In September, Israel launched a preemptive raid in Syria to destroy a construction site that Israelis claim might have been the beginning of a nuclear reactor -- even though Syria has no nuclear-weapons program and could legally build a reactor for electric power. Cheney gave U.S. approval for Israel's strike only after leaders there refused his pleas that they bomb Iran's nuclear-power plant instead.

Yes, the U.S. Air Force and Navy have the razzle-dazzle firepower to destroy 2,000 Iranian targets in short order (not to mention thousands of Iranian civilians, for many of the targets are in populated places). But what happens the next day? Remember those neocon promises, just before the bombing of Iraq in 2003, that our troops would be showered with rose petals by a grateful public? Here we go again. Still intoxicated with the same ideological delusions, the neocons offer nothing but vague assurances that the Iranian masses will greet our forces as liberators and spontaneously overthrow the Tehran regime. In fact, opposition leaders inside Iran say that even the talk of a U.S. military attack is disastrous for their movement, for such reports strengthen hardliners in Iran and weaken those who want to reach out to the West. Iranians are Iranians first, and when a foreign power threatens to bomb or invade their country, they unite.

On Day Two (as well as on Days Three, Four, and so on), Iran most certainly will respond, and the results could be truly hellish for America. That furious wave of anti-Americanism that Podhoretz gleefully predicts would have explosive results in Iraq (further endangering our besieged troops), in such neighboring countries as Saudi Arabia, in the cities of Europe, and right here in the States, where our own citizens could become retaliatory targets.

Then there's oil. Iran and its allies could block the narrow Strait of Hormuz, which connects all of the oil-producing Persian Gulf states to their foreign markets. Up to twenty-five percent of the world's oil must pass through this strategic waterway, and shutting it down would cause prices to zoom astronomically, creating havoc for our oil-soaked economy.

What to do?

You might hope that cooler heads will prevail. Republican political operatives, for example, are aghast at the possible '08 fallout ("Every Republican is going to be defeated," cried one). Also, the generals don't want this -- they know that they don't have the manpower for a real war with Iran. Nor will Bush have a "coalition of the willing" this time -- even the doggishly loyal British government thinks attacking Iran is madness. Then there's Putin of Russia, who pointedly traveled to Iran last month to declare that no one should "even think of making use of force in this region."

However, as a former Bush official told Hersh, "Cheney doesn't give a rat's ass" about any of that, "and neither does the president." The chickenhawks are screeching for war, and they are immune to sanity.

Well, surely, you say, the Democrats will finally stand up to these knuckleheads. After all, Congress has all the power it needs to say no [see last month's Lowdown], and the time for saying it is now, before the shooting starts, before the Bushites start hiding behind the rhetorical cloak of "support the troops."

But the Democrats' congressional leadership is already waffling, and some of their presidential candidates are joining Bush in rattling our sabers at Iran, hoping to appear commander-in-chiefish. Astonishingly, the Senate passed a resolution on September 26 by a 76-22 vote that endorses Bush's confrontation with Tehran! The Kyl-Lieberman amendment buys into the Bushite myths about Iran, calls for the entire Iranian military to be designated "Global Terrorists" under a Bush executive order, and states that it should be U.S. policy to use all instruments of our national power (specifically including "military instruments") to confront the "destabilizing influence" of Iran.

Democrats -- especially Sen. Hillary Clinton -- are now trying to deny that their vote for this resolution gave Bush a free pass to go after Iran, claiming that the resolution was only meant to apply to Iranian interference in Iraq. Intentions are nice, but Bush is not. The amendment's language plainly allows plenty of wiggle room, and the Bushites have shown that they will interpret even an errant sneeze as permission to do whatever they want. Besides, why the hell would Democrats pass anything involving the expansion of this horrible war? Voters put them in charge of Congress to go the opposite way, not to buck up Bush with a new piece of warmongering that Sen. Jim Webb has called "Cheney's fondest pipe dream."

We the People have to be the leaders. More than ever, we have to get noisy. We can't just wring our hands -- there are things we can do:

  • First, connect with our allies in Congress, including the 22 senators who voted against the Kyl-Lieberman surrender to Bush (list available here). Let antiwar lawmakers know you're behind them, ask them to get still noisier on this, and ask that they develop an inside-outside strategy to rally and focus our national outrage against expanding Bush's Iraq disaster into Iran.

  • Second, demand that your Congress critters (whatever their stripe) use all their congressional powers (to control spending, launch investigations, declare war, etc.) to say that the president can take no preemptive military action against Iran without a full, constitutionally mandated declaration of war by Congress.

  • Third, connect with any and all of the savvy grassroots groups in this issue's "Do Something" box. Use their information, sign all of their petitions, spread their materials, and join their actions.

  • Fourth, talk, talk, talk, and talk some more -- in church, at school, with your neighbors and coworkers, at town hall meetings, in family phone calls or visits, on talk radio, at candidate forums, in supermarket check-out lines... wherever you can find an ear. The vast majority of Americans have not heard what Bush is up to, and they won't like it. The most effective way to reach them and activate them is by personal contact -- i.e., you. Talk to someone about it every day.

  • Fifth, don't let Democrats waffle. Iraq was Bush's war (and his political debacle), but Iran would be a product of a Democratic-controlled Congress, and they will be responsible either for allowing it...or for stopping it.

  • Sixth, come up with your own action idea, and let the rest of us know how we can support and spread it.

Be brave. Be loud. Your country needs you.

Either DeadEye Dick "Buckshot" Cheney and shrub jr the boy emperor are 1) completely insane, B) Armegeddonists, Three) corporate lapdogs that serve their masters regardless of the consequences to the world, IV) have I said "batshit crazy" yet?, or e) EVIL!!!! (You may choose at least three of the above, or go off the board. Hightower's articles (especially this one) should be on the editorial page of every paper in America.
These guys are determined to bomb Iran, and if not stopped by our invertebrate Congress, we will soon be looking at only $3/gallon gas as the good old days. The plan is simple....destabilize the Middle East as much as humanly possible, keep oil prices high, and eventually trump up a pretext for an invasion/bombing of Persia so martial law can be invoked, activating all those signing statements/executive orders, canceling elections and then we can all live happily ever after. These guys are the tools of Beelzebub himself, or maybe just tools period.

I'm starting to think that maybe electing Bush and Cheney was a bad idea.

How's that for understatement?

On December 11, 2005, I made a call-in appearance on C-CSPAN's Washington Journal. Here is what I said that morning:

"On Election Day 2000, when this country stupidly send a corrupt, hideous, half-witted frat boy by the name of George W. Bush to the oval office - to the White House - we effecitvely pointed the proverbial loaded pistol at our own, collective head. On Election Day 2004 - make no mistake about it - we pulled the trigger."

I have no doubt that these homicidal bastards now plan on attacking Iran. I've always been against the death penalty as I am in the case of Bush and Cheney. However I must also emphasize the undeniable fact that I wouldn't shead a tear nor would I lose a moment's sleep were they to both be hanged as war criminals.

There. I feel better already!

Dump The Dems

The democrats have done absolutely nothing to earn my support. They have given Bush everything he could ever want. The are the very best, most loyal Republicans ever!

I will not support Democrats in any way. I have donated to and will vote third party exclusively from now on. When the Dems have put Bush and Cheney where they belong, behind bars, then they can look for my support.

Wake up America, the two party "system" is extremely broken. The is no opposition to Bush in any way. Dump Repubs, Dump Dems, and find another path. Otherwise there is no future.

Support the founding of the Social Democratic Party of the USA

It's time: dump the Dems, no more "is it Hillary or is it Obama?" That's a soap opera and not serious politics.

There needs to be an ending to the micing calculation of compromise that destroys change and just causes cynicism and apathy.

A Social Democractic Party of USA would stand for the following:

1) Follow the well laid path set by European social democratic parties
2) Establish a council on design which would begin the process of turning the US back into a country that makes things people want and that has taste and liveable communities
3) Establish minimum social guarantees for all and make sure they are funded (no more huge deficits in social security)
4) End any welfare payments: all must work, study or contribute. No more spending years rotting on benefit. It's a two-way street.

Bush and Cheney, Iraq and Iran

The White House’s propaganda campaign laying the groundwork for military action against Iran dates back almost six years—to Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address in which he designated Iran as a founding member of the “axis of evil.” Since then, this drumbeat has waxed and waned as other concerns—primarily the disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq—have often commanded center stage. Now, with the Bush administration approaching its final year in office, a renewed push and a shorter fuse are increasingly evident. My 3-minute YouTube video entitled “Forewarned Is Forearmed: Bush On Iran” is available HERE. It offers a very brief but deeply troubling chronicle of the president’s public warmongering and demonization of Iran.

Such manipulation of public sentiment has been a key part of the White House’s entire Iraq war enterprise, so we should not be surprised to see it play a similar role in any military attack on Iran. For those interested in a psychological analysis of this warmongering, I have also recently completed a 10-minute online video entitled “Resisting the Drums of War.” It examines how the Bush administration’s messaging targets five core concerns that often govern our lives--concerns about vulnerability, injustice, distrust, superiority, and helplessness. The video describes these warmongering appeals and offers suggestions for how to counter them. It’s available for viewing HERE.

First some of the claims mentioned here -
“Iran is in cahoots with al Qaeda, the demons who crash bombed America on 9/11”. – I never read that so not sure where this is coming from.

“Iran is on the brink of making a nuclear bomb, thus posing an imminent threat to America and to our national interests.” – this claim is from Iran itself. .so while Bush may be prone to fabrication, this isn’t one of those cases.

“Those dastardly Iranians are meddling in our war in Iraq by supplying weapons to our enemies and by sending intelligence agents to undermine Iraq's government” – from the boots on the ground this seems very likely and why would anyone deny it. If we were Iran we’d do the same thing..- Shia, Shite, doesn’t make that much difference when you compare it to the defeat of US policy in the region. We did the same to the Russians in Afghanistan

“”That country's loudmouth, Holocaust-denying president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, makes himself an easy target for Bushite demonization, and all peace-seeking governments must be vigilant toward Iran's potential for belligerence. This requires steady engagement, smart diplomacy, military subtlety, and careful consideration of the complexities embodied within Iran's rich, proud, 6,000-year-old culture.””

Well, then we’d better get a new President fast!

What would you think of a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:

* 29 have been accused of spousal abuse

* 7 have been arrested for fraud

* 19 have been accused of writing bad checks

* 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses

* 3 have done time for assault

* 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

* 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

* 8 have been arrested for shoplifting

* 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits

* 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year...

Can you guess which organization this is?

It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.

(Anybody care to do the research on Bush-Cheney and their appointees?)

The dollar is on the brink of collapse. Iran and Venzuala are trying to trade oil in Euros. Iran already is trading some oil in Euros and hold no U.S. Dollars in there banks.

If oil is not traded in dollars then the dollar collapses. If we do not militarily secure the last energy rich locations on earth then we are militarily weakened.

That is one side of the coin, and no matter how much you disagree with it, deep down you know that this is America's reality.

Of Course the other side of the coin is to go renewable, conserve and start an electron economy, but that just wouldn't be American now would it.

Good Luck, Google Peak Oil and The Money Changers. and here is what the saudi's had to say about the dollar and oil recently:

Boys Who Cried Wolf

"The Iranian government regularly allows inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency access to its nuclear facilities, and this UN agency (which is the one that turned out to be right about the lack of WMDs in Iraq) has found no evidence that Iran is trying to make a bomb."

Just before Bush kicked the weapons inspectors out of Iraq he had delayed the hundreds of thousands of ALREADY staged troops for our invasion of Iraq.

Remember that? Those two facts are history.

Then Bush told us that SADDAM kicked the weapons inspectors out of Iraq. He lied to you and me about this.

Then, he got flak from neocons about our troops, who were staged and ready to go but hadn't been ordered to attack. They told him, and you and me heard all about it - that those troops weren't going to just sit idly by and do nothing. So, they told Bush to get the f*ck in and attack. Remember that? That is also part of history.

All of it was a pack of lies. At that point, BushCo hadn't totally taken over the media and all that information was readily available.

Remember! Remember. The boys who cried wolf. Yet you and me had all the facts.

Well, look at the quote at the beginning of this post again. It is from the article. Iran is regularly inspected by a team who knows already that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iran nor do they have a nuclear program. Just like Iraq.

You and me are being LIED to once again. It is an abject lie. We are being drawn once again into a war of Bush's choosing. There is no sense to this unless you choose to believe that Bush is trying, like the madman he has proven himself to be, to usher in Armageddon.

Your elected officials have no backbone to stop Bush. You and me have no power to stop him either.

It is clear and evident: it is too late for the US. The experiment is totally over. G. Washington would turn in his grave. If we're lucky we'll look back (if we're still alive) and see that the BushCo presidency was the pivotal moment in US history. It will be the pivotal point were we fell to defeat as a nation.

Our votes are stolen: electronic voting is a failure. Thus, we have no way to remove these people from office. We have no control over our media, which won't report these issues. Republicans - hypocrites all - won't stand up for truth and real values. They are the most complicit in the lie.

I'm beginning to believe, too, that our blind support for Israel is at the root of this. Why that country must be some sort of shining example for the world is anyone's guess. But I can only assume it's because American fundamentalist Christians think that their god reveres the Levant more than their own country.

Wake up poeple! There is a way to save this country!

Impeach Cheney NOW

Defense of the Constitution Knows No Party

The Bush administration has illegally seized and imprisoned Americans without benefit of their trial by jury, has spied on Americans without warrant in violation of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution, has lied America into a disastrous war, and has betrayed an American intelligence officer, who was working on weapons of mass destruction networks, to our enemies (Valerie Plame.)

Impeachment hearings against Vice President Dick Cheney are now a distinct possibility, thanks to a recent outpouring of public support for impeachment by Americans across the political spectrum. Your calls and faxes to House Judiciary Committee members are needed to keep up the pressure.

Leave a message for your Congressman, to demand he obey his oath to "defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Act now to restore your rights and the rule of law bequeathed to us by our Founding Fathers, which brave men have died defending throughout our history.

CALL the House Judiciary Committee

202-225-3951 and tell them you want Impeachment hearings NOW!

*What Happened to Make This All Possible?

On November 6, 2007, Rep. Dennis Kucinich brought H.Res.333, for the impeachment of Cheney, to the House Floor for debate. It was broadcast on CSPAN. A sudden outpouring of public support for impeachment forced lawmakers to keep the resolution alive. Democrats, most of whom currently resist demands for impeachment, were unwilling to kill the bill with the public watching. Republicans and some Democrats, mindful of impeachment sentiment, voted to debate the bill, but failed. At the end of the day, Americans of both parties had made it clear whose "table" this is, and that they want to see impeachment on it.

Yes, Podheretz is a wingnut. Yes, Bush gave him a medal. No, that doesn't mean we will attack Iran.

I can only suppose that Hightower wants to be able to take credit for preventing his fantasied attack? How dramatic.

My greatest fear...

Every morning I live in horror that I am going to wake up and hear that during the night, that maniac and his thugs have invaded Iran. Thanks to Congress with their no holds bar military appropriations bill, he has the money to do whatever he wants without supplemental funding until February. By then we could find ourselves so enmeshed in Iran that the funding will be necessary to actually defend ourselves in a world war.

When that happens, I know that martial law is not far behind; that people like those who post here (and myself) will be running for our freedom into hiding; and the American people will become the enemies of every nation on this planet. It will not be just the beginning of WWIII, it will be the end of this nation as we knew it. Our only hope will be a swift, violent overthrow of our own government and a very public trial of BushCo and all its supporters in Congress for the world to see.

I live with that fear every morning as I watch the sun rise. It is what makes me keep writing and thinking and trying to find solutions that can help to rebuild this nation in the future. I also wonder if our children will have the will to take back their country from this insanity when the time comes, and I hope that their parents will lead the way for them.

That is the only fear I have after 9/11. And it is a fear of our own elected government. That is why Bin Laden won on 9/11 - we let BushCo intimidate us into being afraid, but for me at least, it is not Al Qaida I fear, it is George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Condelezza Rice, Robert Gates, and the Congress. I pray that our military will stop following orders from this madman, and find the courage not to face a non-existent enemy, but the real enemy here in DC.

When the military becomes the last line of defense in a country against those elected to govern, we no longer have a democracy. De Tocqueville once wrote that if he had to choose between liberty and equity, he would choose liberty because without it equity was not possible. It is time for us, with the assistance of honorable service men and women, to take back our government and restore our liberty. We no longer have the option of time.

I just heard this on the msm Friday. Isn't this "new evidence" just fuel for the furnace? Has anyone mentioned this yet? What is your take on this? I've heard it would be 5 years before Iran would have nuclear bomb capability, but this report changes the timetable.

"An official close to the IAEA said the watchdog's inspectors had been able to confirm for the first time Iran's claim that it had 3,000 centrifuges enriching uranium.

That is the number scientists believe is sufficient, in ideal conditions, to produce enough enriched uranium in one year to make a single nuclear bomb.

In the report sent to its 35-member board on Thursday, the IAEA found that Iran had taken important strides in revealing the extent of its nuclear programme.

But it was still defying UN demands that it suspend uranium enrichment and had also refused to sign the so-called Additional Protocol, a key document allowing unrestricted inspections.

That made it difficult for IAEA inspectors to be certain there were no undeclared nuclear activities in Iran, the report complained."

There is always a false-flag op used as pretext to start a war. Gulf of Tonkin. Northwoods. Babies in incubators. And, the grandest of history's false-flag ops, 9/11.

Unless Israel starts the war on Iran by attacking first, and then we come to Israel's aid, I assume that we would need an even grander 9/11 to convince the public and congress to go along with Cheney's desires to invade Iran.

I envision a false-flag op against our navy in the Hormuz straights, similar to the Gulf of Tonkin.

Good article in that it neatly ties a bunch together. (And Hightower is always an enjoyable read.)

I will not deny that Bush and Cheney are capable of ANYTHING. Yes, the US will attack Iran. Why? Simply because war is fun -- this would be enough of a provocation for those in charge.
Add to that the Neocons' hubris and the Religious Right's lust for the Apocalypse, never mind the "good vs evil" world-view of the Bushies (Guess which side the US is really on). And war will come, even if Congress gave a damn about saving America -- and it obviously does not.

And with war, people will die, many many innocent people (on all sides of the conflict, including ours). But that won't matter to those that pushed for war.

Bush and Cheney have been emboldened to attack Iran, not only because of the passing of the Kill/Liar-man amendment, but because Congress has done nothing serious to shut down the Iraq war or to hold Bush Admn officials accountable for their war-crimes.
Bush is a spoiled rotten kid, and if he doesn't get to blow something up, he will get real mad.

There are no words to describe Dick Cheney and George Bush. These men are not villians in a fiction novel or a movie, but are the leaders of this country. The only way that we the people can hold these men accountable for their crimes against this country appears to be impeachment. Must we complete the ruin of our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our White House, our Congress, our Supreme Court, our military, our budget, our environment, our future, our children's future? We have a voice as the people of this country and we must use it. We must be persistant in demanding impeachment from our Senators and Representatives. We must be persistant in demanding that impeachment be discussed in the media. There doesn't appear to be anyone or anything out there that can save us but we ourselves. I have never been so frightened or so angry as I am at this point in time. Dennis Kucinich is leading the way and he needs support from us and from his fellow Congressmen and women. The time is now. Enough is enough.

Expected Attack 2 Years Ago

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Only trouble with this scenario is the Bush-Cheney hyperbole about Iran was even louder two years ago. I expected the attack then and if I recall, Scott Ritter had predicted the war would start in July. It didn't happen then. Not sure why just as I still can't understand why the Damnocrats are standing still for this with that "impeachment is off the table" bullshit. If Bush-Cheney do go to war with Iran, I think that we should try the whole bunch, not just Bush-Cheney, but Reid, Pelosi, Hillary, Conyers and the rest for treason not only to the nation, but the world and human race. A few like Kucinich, Barbara Lee and one or two others will be exonerated, but the rest of them should spend the rest of their days in dank, cold, brutal prison cells in the general population, not in special, cushy, low-security cells.

As for the suggestion to send Bush a copy of the Constitution, what good would that do? Bush can't read and the only thing he would do is defecate on it then burn it in the bonfire of the White House copy as well as the original from Philadelphia and the laws of the nation on the White House lawn.

And even if Bush-Cheney fail to start the war with Iran, they should be tried and convicted of treason. It's just that the Congressional Damnocrats will be allowed to skate, but not for lack of trying to be traitors and enemies to this nation and the human race. In any event, we need to replace the whole bunch with Democrats who are loyal to the nation and the people of this nation, who are representing the voters, and not their self-serving selves.

Oil at $100 per barrel will seem cheap compared to the cost after an attack on Iran. Oil from Iran will stop coming to us and Chavez has made it clear that he will cut off the US from any oil exports from his country if we attack Iran. Other countries may also adopt sanctions against the US by interrupting oil and gas supplies. GW always takes care of his own. $200+ per barrel oil will further endear him and old Buckshot to their well oiled base.

Isreal already bombed Syria a month or so ago.But the media made light of it. SO watch Israel they will be Bush's excuse to engage in the alleged want to bomb Iran.

You have to really WONDER THOUGH a nuclear bomb with no viably affective deliver systems is meaningless. Our "homeland" is not treatened by any nuclear bomb if it was a reality. And Israel, well, don't confuse jewdism with Israeli fanatics and there zionist mind sets. As bigots themselves they have no concern with democracy. Which is self evident by their empire building of their own. WWII has nothing to do with their reasoning. They are as guilty as the natzies in their ways of treating Palastinians.

Hell, Israel and Pakistan and India have the bomb. Iran woundn't have a snow balls chance in hell to with stand any nuclear event.
So it doesn't even make any sense what so ever to use Stopping Iran form any alleged nuclear efforts.

OIL is the prize, but to nuke would completely undermine oil extraction efforts any way. So I just can't see any logic to the Nuke Ideal. But of course, remember that "sabber rattling" before the Iraq invasion where as the media presented to MOAB (Mother Of All Bombs. What a rediculous Propaganda presentation, as if no one could see through the BS)?

The only way to put the stop on these "Ice holes" is to impeach Cheney, then Bush AND Pelosi !

Pelosi, I heard yesterday said she'd "put Impeachment back on the table if she got 10,000 hand writen Impeachment support letters.
START WRITTING THEM EVERYONE!

BUT,
I say RECALL Pelosi and Feinstein for their supporting the Bush regime, not fulfilling their commitments as to why they were voted in. The people have been betrayed by these two in oh so many ways.

Though I have concerns that if Bush and Cheney where impeached, next in line for the "roll" of President is the Speaker of the House.
here is the linch pin of the whole problem.

So I ask all you why is Pelosi not on your list of Bushites to be removed from their office? She has put this whole effort off to a last resort. Where I believe going to War is suppose to be the last resort.

The nation can not begin to return to a democracy until the the Contitution is revalidated by enacting the peoples demand to impeach the ones responsible for the complete disruption of national and international disharmony around the world. Especially being that 911 was an inside job.

Yet if it wasn't way not reveal the truth?

this is really sensationalism and a bit of rorschach tossed in for good measure.

the US gave up the doctrine of a 3 front war during the Clinton years. this was replaced with a neo-blitzkrieg style approach to military operations. hit hard, fast, with minimal troops and maximum support. secure with allies within the UN, then turn over to the multinational effort.

of course, the batch of chickenhawks in the oval office scoff at the UN and allies (well except for 11 troops form nicarauga and the like)tried to revive on the fly the old 3 front doctrine of the US capable of sustaining 3 fronts in assaults and hasty defences. which of course, hasn't worked worth a damn considering we're in a 3 front campaign--afghanistan, iraq, and north korea and all 3 going miserably, though i suppose NK in detente rates a passable score; yes, i realise NK doesn't have the sex appeal with embedded reporters and the like, but make no mistake, it is a front line.

there's no way in HELL we could open a 4th front in iran. we're not talking that piddly republican guard held in check by fear and lashings from the top officer corps. we're talking a dedicated, modern, and battle tested force with actual PLANs for attack and counterattack.

now, if i'm wrong and that idiot and his puppetmaster completely ignore even the most lipservice paying toadie general who knows we can't open a 4th front and tells them so, i'll berloody well...hell, i don't know what i'll do.

wait, i do know. emmigrate to whatever country will take me as political refugee; i understand they need tech support in lagos nigeria...

Far too many comments here are concerned with what something like this will do to the bloody price of gasoline! GASOLINE? We will be adding millions more people to the horrors and suffering of war, turning the bereaved survivors into haters of anything American for generations to come and our main concern is how it will effect our comfort? There is a moral disconnect in this country that kind of deserves the stupid "leaders" we now have and most likely will elect again... ever listened to Hilary or Barack? These are no peacemakers, let me tell you that and they are by far the leading candidates. I feel that at heart, most people here really believe that we somehow deserve to live better than anyone else on the planet and that all the suffering in the "third" world has nothing whatsoever to do with our demand for affordable kush.

There are enormous disasters coming, ecological and humanitarian that we can avoid if we get up off our fat asses and ACT and but I doubt we will because we might miss the latest episode of our favorite TV series or "the GAME" or some such crap.

When people can read of or see an ecodisaster like the one that just happened in the Black Sea or San Francisco Bay and act like that has nothing to do with them, then those people are on the road to extinction because they no longer recognize that they are living beings, a part of everything else alive and dependent on that diversity remaining intact to go on as a viable species.

We are tearing great holes in the fabric of life that has brought us forth... we are allowing so called "leaders, "like "Shotgun Dick" and the bozo, to make us collectively responsible for THEIR actions... we could stop using oil for fuel tommorrow if we would find the will and the balls to tough it out while we build a new ifrastructure, but we won't. We lack the character.Plus, there is always some credentialed hack out there who for the right amount of pay will challenge scientific evidence and keep alive the idea that "no one really knows"... Well, when our grand children walk on a planet 50 years from now that is so alien and devoid of the splendid diversity of living things that we have and take for granted now, and see film of what was, barely a generation back, what will they think of us?

But I know,.. It's way easier to think that Armedenajad (sp?) is somehow the problem and not our gluttonous, slothful normal. We have it in us to be a great people but we choose instead to follow leaders over cliffs and knee jerkedly demonize whoever they ask us to... rather than look in the mirror.

This is the Empire of Fools.

What we can do to head this off is as outlined by Jim Hightower. Sound off. Contact Congress. Talk to people about it. It may feel gauche to bring up the subject with people, but think about what's at stake. Somehow we need to penetrate the denser members of the Senate and House, convince them that, No, they won't get whacked if they vote against this new war. They'll get whacked if they allow it to go forward. Simple message. Also, perhaps a mass migration out of the Democrat Party -- one that would make news.

Between them, Britain and America have at least 10,000 Nuclear Weapons (America - 9,938 and Britain - 200). Many are 'active' (ready to go) and can be delivered to just about any part of the planet. Iran has... none that we know of, and it is estimated they are between 2-10 years from developing one.

So why would The American Government even talk about Iran as a threat to World Peace or a threat to America itself? And why would other Nuclear countries like France, Germany (yes Germany has nukes, in American bases) and Britain show varying amounts of support for this apparent American aggression?

My theory is that the answer lies with Israel. Israel has been allowed to develop and stockpile Nuclear weapons without any form of control and now possesses an undisclosed arsenal that is estimated as between 100 and 400 weapons. It is also widely believed Israel possesses chemical and biological warfare capabilities too. This gives Israel total supremacy in the region. Should this balance of power change and Israel feel threatened it is entirely possible She would make preemptive attacks as She has done in the past.

One bomb in 10 years that probably can't be delivered is no threat is it? Yes it is, other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt may feel threatened and start to build Nuclear arsenals. Syria may even join the race if She hasn't already done so. Eventually Israel would find Herself surrounded by Nuclear armed states. At that point a war would be almost inevitable and the destruction of Middle East oil producing countries could lead to a global war as economies collapse.

If the US can take control of Iran through the usual channels, insurgency, sanctions, human rights etc and replace the Government with one more agreeable, war may be avoided. But this is very unlikely and it will probably take a war, or at least massive bombing to achieve the afore mentioned result.

There are a lot of 'ifs' and 'maybes' in this theory but it explains a lot of the US Governments actions and Bush's references to WWIII.

They are in bondage. Once they sign up they are not let out-- like captured animals. And then we see these right-wing fascist private armies being built up by the Bush regime. Their mercenaries are paid 5, 10, 20 times what our soldiers are paid. This is intolerable. Bush is stealing from the Army to pay his fascist friends. And do not forget he has almost wiped out the National Guard by sending unprepared and under armed men to die in Iraq. This is hideous! Bush isn't a fascist? Can you count to three?-- Joe

Another "they're really going to attack Iran article ... I mean *really* this time ... " article, right about on schedule by my calendar. War in Iran is many years away, if it occurs at all. For now, there's too much homogenization and oil-extraction work to be done in Iraq alone. Oil prices are way up, and the money is really starting to roll in for the cartel now. Mission accomplished. The type of talk in this article only dilutes real anti-war discussion, and only works to condition readers to the reality that the US military presence in the ME will extend onward for many decades.

Basra attacks down 90% since British troops left

A spokesman for the British Army said violence in Basra has fallen dramatically after the British forces withdrew from the southern Iraqi city early this year. By next month, British will end its combat role in Iraq.
In early September, 500 British soldiers left one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces in the heart of the city in early September and they also stopped conducting regular foot patrols. Since then, the overall level of violence is down 90% according to the British Army spokesman.

The spokesman said, the violence is still there, the Iraqi security still come under attack from the militants in Basra, but has declined by more than 90%.

British forces will fully relinquish control of Basra province to Iraq officials next month and will officially end Britain’s combat role in Iraq. Will US army be the next?

Supporters of war had said if army forces leave the violence will rise, but in Basra, the opposite is being seen. The US army can leave and until normalcy is restored an UN International Peacekeeping force with Arab countries participation to mollify the locals can remain in Iraq. Al-Qaeda or the separatists will have no excuse then to cause violence in Iraq.

Also google "Basra attacks down 90% since British troops left" this just isnt this article.

We need a new, peoples' party and a peoples' lobby. The next president will be worse than Bush, as will the Congress.

Time to put your cards on the table.

Jim,

I love you man, loved you since the days when you were Railroad Commissioner. There was a time when I hoped to see you run for president some day. You represent the best of America, and when you speak, I listen. But what counts most is not who leads the American people, gets heard, becomes our voice; it is that someone does. Right now, in this presidential race, that someone is Dennis Kucinich. It's time for you to come out for him, support him on impeachment, and support him for president.

Kucinich has grown. He is completely fearless, completely authentic and completely committed to the interests of the working people. He is not a great coalition builder, I fear. He is not and never will be the humorist that you are, but give him a platform and he can connect. He represents the views on the issues of a solid majority of the people, including Republicans. If his campaign were to cross the threshold to where people were taking it seriously the result would be a political earthquake as millions of people began to dare to hope, to shed their despair and cynicism and to make themselves heard.

Supporting Kucinich would cost you. No doubt there are editors, politicians, labor leaders who give you a platform from which to speak or write, but who see their responsibility as including "keeping a lid on things", and who would pull back from you in fear or disgust if you came out for Kucinich. But it is the right thing to do. If we can get Dennis over the threshold, the "potential barrier", into legitimacy, it would have a huge effect on the political conversation in this country.

You've built up a lot aof political capital in some quarters. The hour is late, the times are urgent, and we may be at a "tipping point" where your capital could make a difference. It's time to push your chips in to the middle and put your cards on the table.

Let's Get Real

These are oil wars. The only way to stop them is to stop consuming so much oil. Unless Americans are willing to stop driving, or at least drive a LOT less, our leaders, who are just doing what our actions show we want, will continue to fight for the oil we consume. Politicians pay far more attention to what people actually do than to letters, emails, phone calls, or protests. In other words, it's far more important what people do than what they say. Americans drive far more than anyone else on the planet, and also buy SUVs and other needlessly large vehicles. By buying those things and consuming so much oil, Americans are voting for these wars, despite the much less meaningful votes they cast at the polls, in communications with their representatives, or in protests.

Yes, the Bushes are oil people and make a lot of money from this stuff, but oil people wouldn't even be electable if we didn't consume the stuff. If even most leftists and so-called environmentalists are not willing to give up their car cultures, what hope is there that everyone else will?

For High Crimes and misdemeanors against the Constitution of the United States, Creucifixion would be appropriate, and leave their bodies there for the scavengers to dispose of. The Romans knew the usefullness of leaving the bodies as a deterrent to others. One cannot think of a more fitting end to Bush/Chenney and any other corrupt polititians.

The USA DOES NOT Have a Viable Military Option to Attack Iran

War with Iran won't happen despite the saber-rattling. It is logistically too difficult and would cause such an economic calamity that the economies of the West would be devastated for years. Mostly, this saber-rattling is just an attempt by Bush to compel submission by Iran and not much more. Now, I am not ruling out a military strike with bombs or missles by the USA or Israel, that is possible. But, I think this might also not happen because it is dubious it would even be successful. USA and Israel would have to attack "known" hardened sites (with dubious payoff) and the consequences would still be a counter-strike by Iranian forces on Western targets (using clandestine forces) that could be devastating. The collapse of the Western economy would come, by the way, with oil prices scooting over $300 a barrel or more. As for the Army of America, it is tied down indefinetly in Iraq and of no use as a ground invasion force against Iran.

Great Game Redux

It saddens me to see that the executive branch of the US government has usurped much of the authority of the government. The paradigm of a federal republic established by the Founding Fathers has been transmogrified into an oligarchical empire ruled by the monied elite. The Anglo-American confederacy seems to be engaged in a new instantiation of the "Great Game" rivalry of the 19th century. In his 1997 work, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic
Imperatives, Zbigniew Brzezinski presciently invoked the theories of Sir Halford John Mackinder.

"Who rules East Europe commands the Heartland; who rules the Heartland commands the World-Island; who rules the World-Island controls the world."

The 109th Congress, 2d Session passed the Silk Road Strategy Act of 2006 (http://www.theorator.com/bills109/s2749.html) back in May of 2006. It seems to me that the
Anglo-American foreign policy regime is clearly set on encircling Russia and her near abroad as well doing the same to China. By having preponderant influence in Central Asia, the Anglo-American coalition also inherits the logical peripheries of the Middle East and Africa.

With this said, an outright invasion of Iran isn't on the agenda. The Anglo-American axis will look to secure a new front in Pakistan now that the Caspian see nations have reached consensus not to allow their territory to be used as bases for attack (of Iran or any other member).

...is flat out bull... How about being a bit more objective, and non bius. Your headline is definitely not the way to achieve this.
Flat out, imo (and thats all that matters to me, so don't try to convince me otherwise, cuz I won't be rechecking/trolling this review again) Its not going to happen.
This whole article sounded like the "there maybe, perhaps another imminent attack on US soil, kinda, possibly, in the next week, I think.." bush spews out of his mouth.
The OP of this article gets a 100% "poopoo" from this reader.

Poor navy

I doubt there will be any attack on iran as long as your navy is present in the persian gulf.
Iran has enough antiship missiles to sink anything in the gulf, and close the hormutz strait.
Unless an attack and subsequent sunk navy can be construed as a new pearl harbour.
(Those bombing runs were just, the response is a completely unprovoked crime)

Wonder when the dollar colapses.

Do you think it would be completely irrational to bomb certain sites
Posted by: wsx on Nov 22, 2007 6:41 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
My concerns about iran are three:

1. if the have the bomb, every nation over there will want one, and that cant be good

2. I think mahmoud just might be crazy enough to use a nuke, let me know if we have evidence to the contrary

3 iran is a state sponsor of terrorism and we wont be able threaten them with our fancy aircraft and munitions if they have a bomb to back them up if they do something material against the us

I think putting a large hole where their nuclear enrichment facilites are located may not be the worst idea. Not interested in regime change or a broader war.

People far more powerful than I and they put together will definitely see to that result.

Suicide is a mild term for what they actually will be committing; it might not just be the last official act of their misbegotten Presidency, but of their very lives.

Sometimes God gives idiots enough rope to hang themselves, but others end up doing the actual hanging. Mussolini comes to mind.

And Mussolini should be coming to their minds every time Bush and Cheney's bloody fingers get anywhere near that button. Mussolini and his buddy Adolf, and their parallel fates...

Amerika may indeed be FUBAR, but it does not long tolerate Nazis.

Ditto the World.
