Summer Camp Teaches U.S. Teens To Fight Israeli Style

By Chris Hedges, Truthdig. Posted October 17, 2007.

Jewish-American teenagers can sign up for an eight-week training course run by the Israel Defense Forces where they fire weapons, live in military barracks and saunter around in an Israeli military uniform.

If you are a young Muslim American and head off to the Middle East for a spell in a fundamentalist "madrassa," or religious school, Homeland Security will probably greet you at the airport when you return.  But if you are an American Jew and you join hundreds of teenagers from Europe and Mexico for an eight-week training course run by the Israel Defense Forces, you can post your picture wearing an Israeli army uniform and holding an automatic weapon on MySpace.

The Marva program, part summer camp part indoctrination, was launched in Israel in 1981. It allows participants, who must be Jewish and between the ages of 18 and 28, to fire weapons, live in military barracks in the Negev desert and saunter around in an Israeli military uniform saluting and taking long hikes with military packs. The Youth and Education Corps of the Israel Defense Forces run four 120-strong training sessions a year.

"Upon arrival, the participants experience an abrupt change into army life: wearing uniforms, accepting army discipline, and learning the programs and lessons integral to the program," the Let Israelis Show You Israel Web site reads. "The program includes military content such as: navigation, field training, weapons training, shooting ranges, marches and more, as well as educational content such as: Zionism, Jewish Identity, history and knowledge of the land of Israel.  All of this is taught in Hebrew in an intensive eight weeks."

"The participants finish the program after completing a short, intensive, exhilarating military experience that allows them to taste Israel in a way that they never could before -- as part of the Israel Defense Forces," the site reads. "They leave the program with a feeling of belonging and a strong connection to Israel, and many return to Israel to continue the connection that was created in the framework of the Marva course."

There are, of course, gushing testimonials about the program.

"I spent the first few days of Marva doubting my decision, wondering why I had come, wondering if there was any way out.  With all of the running, yelling orders, discipline and Hebrew, I felt horribly out of place, writes Canadian David Roth of his summer.  It was a completely different world from the one I was used to.  All that changed, though, by the end of the first week.  We had our first ‘Masa’ (Hike).  It was very hard, but at the end, we all knew, our M16s were waiting for us at the ‘tekes’ (Ceremony).  We got through the 8 kilometers and had our ‘tekes’ and got our guns.  It felt amazing, and from that point on Marva was incredible.

How have we reacted when we discovered that American Muslims were being taught in a foreign country to fire machine guns at paper figures and simulate military maneuvers?  And what about the summer schools in Gaza organized by Islamic Jihad designed to train young Palestinians in the basics of military life?  These Gaza camps, uncovered in 2001, were widely denounced by Israel as proof that the Palestinians were teaching their children to hate and kill.

The argument in favor of camps in Israel, as opposed to camps in Pakistan, is that these young men and women are not going to come back and use what they have learned to harm Americans.  They are not terrorists.  Muslims, however, have not cornered the market on terrorism and violence.  Radical Jews have also been involved in terrorist attacks in Israel and the United States.

I discovered an American in Israel in 1989 named Robert Manning.  A huge, burly man, Manning was living in the West Bank Jewish settlement of Kiyrat Arba.  When I found him he was carrying a pistol, a large knife strapped to his leg and an M-16 assault rifle.  He was part of a Jewish terrorist group called Committee for Protection and Safety of the Highways that set up ad hoc roadblocks and pulled Palestinians from cars to beat and often shoot them.  He was a follower of Meir Kahane, the leader of the Jewish Defense League, who was implicated in terrorist attacks in the United States and Israel.  Manning served as a reservist in the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank.

Manning was wanted in California for murder.  He had been charged in a 1980 mail-bomb killing as part of his involvement in the Jewish Defense League.  The bomb was intended for the owner of a local computer firm, but the package holding the device was opened by the firm’s secretary, Patricia Wilkerson, who was killed instantly by the blast.

Manning, full of bluster and a bitter racism toward Arabs, used as his pseudonym the name of the FBI agent in charge of his case, a bit of humor that backfired on him by confirming my suspicion of his identify.  I obtained the picture from his California driver’s license and showed it to his neighbors at Kiyrat Arba.  They identified him from the photo.  I wrote an article affirming that Manning, heavily armed and an active member of the Israeli army, was living in a Jewish settlement.  The Israeli government, until that moment, said it had no information about his location.  He was extradited in 1993 and sentenced the next year to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 30 years.  He is in a maximum-security prison in Florence, Colo.

Those who go through the Marva summer program are indoctrinated as thoroughly as Muslims who go overseas and are told they are part of a greater jihad for Islam.  The results, given Israel’s close alliance with the United States, may not be negative for those in power in the United States, but it may be very negative for those Americans defined as the enemy, especially Muslims, should we suffer another 9/11.  The program inculcates hatred and a belief in the efficacy of violence to solve the problems in the Middle East.  It identifies Israel with militarism.  It feeds the idea that a Jew born in Brooklyn has a birthright to settle in Israel that is denied to an American of Palestinian descent.

Jerusalem, aside from being one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is one of the most literate, creative and intellectual.  Do these young men and women really know the best of Israel by spending eight weeks playing soldier and glorifying the military?  Is the cause of Israel advanced by mirroring the twisted militarism of Islamic fundamentalists?

Terrorists arise in all cultures, all nations and all religions.  We have produced more than our share.  Ask the people of Vietnam or Iraq.  The danger of a military program such as these is that it solidifies a mind-set of us and them.  It romanticizes violence.  It widens the divide that leads to conflict.  It makes dialogue impossible.  There are great Israeli institutions, from the newspaper Haaretz to the courageous Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem to Peace Now.  A summer working for them, rather than wearing an army uniform, unleashing bursts of automatic fire in the desert and singing Israeli patriotic songs, might actually help.

A fanatic is a fanatic regardless of the label.
It does not matter whether they draw their 'inspiration' from Mein Kampf, the Torah, the Bible, the Koran or the communist manifesto.
What is believed is not significant but what is significant the fact that they believe. Belief is always the blind acceptance of any nonsense which enables one to avoid responsibility for one's own life and one's decisions. Very popular because one does not have to grow up when one is a believer.
Last week there was someone justifying Che Guavara's murderous actions because he as revolutionary claimed to be motivated by the love of humanity.
The life of a single person is worth immeasurably more than all of the silly belief systems combined including those about that abstraction, humanity.
Just look at history. Many belief systems have disappeared, many civilisations and cultures have gone.
What remains is the individual person who is in his or her own life is facing the perennial questions which will still be there long after the current fancies and beliefs have passed out of existence.
The fanatics try to prevent this passing by corrupting the youth of each generation. The jews are doing this, the muslims are doing this , the christians are doing this. It is said to be a noble pursuit this attempt to pass on the tradition. Mostly it is not.
It is simply an attempt to prevent the 'tide of history' (cliche but useful!) from washing all of the current idiotic notions into the sea.
Interestingly the high art of the culture will survive but that is because is genuinely springs from the inner lives of the artists and nourishes individuals rather than depleting them as do the various vacuous millenial ideologies.

Compulsory Service?

This Israeli Defense Forces link describes compulsory service at "...age 18, women for two years and men for three, followed by service in the reserves, men up to age 51 and single women to age 24."

Participants in the Marva program described in the article are only for Jewish 18- to 28-year olds, but it made me think of the movie, “Jesus Camp”, where adults think of children in the camp as “soldiers for Christ,” and feel if the enemy is training their young to fight/kill, Christians should be doing it too.

The IDF site goes on to say: “Orthodox women may be exempted, although many choose to perform 1¬2 years national service in the civilian sector. Most ultra¬Orthodox men are granted deferments while pursuing Torah studies, and those who serve in the IDF mainly fulfill religious functions.”

Do we have a complimentary exemption in America during times of draft for those willing to pursue Bible studies? How easy is it to be a Conscientious Objector (especially one without religious beliefs) and avoid the draft? And if anyone thinks joining the military allows you a choice between the civilian sector and combat, think again, so there are few choices in this country, unless you're rich, connnected or both.

For the rest of us, how many have heard some courts in America sentence people with two choices: prison or military service, and although regulations prevent serving in the military in lieu of serving a criminal sentence, it does happen (my cousin’s son, who had a football scholarship, accidentally injured someone while drunk and shooting at road signs; he was given the same choice and is now in the army—first he was told he was going to Nepal, but now is headed for Iraq).

A few years ago, a coworker who wore around his waist something similar to the prayer shawl, and a yamika, showed me (in the workplace mind you) the gun he hid behind this piece of apparel around his waist. He said it was to protect himself from anyone that would harm him or his family and of course because of what he wore, he made himself and his family easier targets. Was he saying his religion was more important than his family because he chose to wear these religious articles of clothing?

Religion and acts of violence, or precepts to acts of violence, with one act used to justify another (like gang symbols, signs and colors displayed knowing it can incite rival gangs to kill each other) leads me to wonder why people would do everything described here and in the main article if they didn’t fully intend to use their weapon, or religion, or weapon because of religion/belief system and so on.

Even if all the Israelis try to create peace, the Iranians and the lot of middle east regimes will sabotage any peace. The insurgency of hamas and hezbollah are terrorizing till the bitter end while Iran and the rest of the middle east regimes continue to create their slave labor for your COMMON DREAMS VIEWERS READY TO MOVE TO DUBAI SO YOU CAN EXPLOIT SEX SLAVERY. YOUR OIL remains intact to exploit and deflect YOUR own tyranny onto Israel. This never ending cycle of deflection is the history that has taken place and will continue , for I see these piss poor common dreams comments and this tells me your intellectual society is ready to keep on festering away because you cant see outside your little box of imperialism.
THE DAY Liberal Blogs ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT THAT ISRAEL AND PA HAVE BEEN USED TO KEEP MIDDLE EAST REGIMES EXPLOITING, IS THE DAY WE CAN MAKE PEACE. UNTIL THEN YOU’RE ALL JUST WELL, WRONG!!!!!!

FURTHER MORE, The people who are working to truly make peace are the permaculture institutions in the Arava desert. The PA’s and Israelis working together to restore and accelerate earths processes are feeling the political deflection as well. I documented this experiment and its in my film. I cant stomach the deflections.
How will there be any change in the shift back to sustainable living when Liberals scapegoat their imperial fear onto Israel and the neo cons getting ready for rapture fight for Israel for all the wrong reasons? This is why you have sided with tyranny in the middle east. TO bad really. Friends like these who needs enemies.

Here I witness and present peace movements through the sustainable permaculture revolution and you still cant hear. Your hate for Israel is more than a red neck who hates blacks. There is no room for removing your selective hearing is there? I want peace alternet wants Israel removed. Can you hear it? I can.
Permaculture revolution is happening whether your imperialness acknowledge it or not. People you must know that your either going to pick up out of the machine of consolidation and be a part of the turning point or by 2012 you will be a part of the tipping point. I dont care who turns. I have turned and in 2 years I will be completely eco nested. I pitty you all and wish you would stop this deflection.
The Permaculture revolution is happening whether you imperial liberal scapegoaters acknowledge it or not. I dont care who turns. I have turned and in 2 years I will be completely eco nested. I pitty you all and wish you would stop this deflection.

“Sustainable Human culture” is part of permaculture. Meanwhile, Atlanta is the first city to run out of water, I cant believe it, my home town. Florida is consuming all the water. Out sourcing is not a sustainable human culture. Do you know how festering you are in AMerica?

I was press at the Peak Oil conference at Boston University, to documenting energy designs that can empower villages. So when I see the timeline of what the fossil fuel era constructed on earth (DUBAI), and how that resource diminished will affect humanity in its oneness dealing with natures natural patterns. You dont want to go there. None of you do, so what do you do, you deflect with selective hearing and call on Israeli misdeeds as genocidal insults. Your systems of slavery make you imperialists. 10 cents an hour global slave wage. 60 minutes last night supporting Dubai when those emirish snobs who spit on everyones rights. I really want to know when the rest of you are going to get on my train and start focusing on a local food web system. You are either on this sIte for knowledge which leads to wisdom or you just get spoon fed a course of information that leads to WAKING UP ONE DAY ASKING WHY THERE IS NO ENERGY AROUND. I want direction! I want purpose, planning, development. And Alternet posting this article is their own form of system of slavery to perpetuate imperialsm. I dont care if they know it or not, you’re still guilty. Its like a bank robber asks his friend to stop and let him out and wait and drive away, the driver is guilty even though he was unaware of the situation. This goes the same with your unaware ability to foresee what planet earth will be in 2012 the date of peak oil. Foolish people to me you all are. I need a migration to eco nesting and have a burningman culture. Thats me, I dare you to make the shift.
Why can’t you see the connection between the Palestinian creation and the history of Middle East regime tyranny and their global energy piracy within the middle east? Islamic jihad has tried everything (terror) to keep the modern world out. And here you are supporting the uncivilized. Funny really.

If you want a Palestinian state tell Jordan, Egypt and Syria to give up land as well for the creation. Why should Israel be the only one. We all know that the Palestinians are from Egypt , Jordan, and Syria.
What really urks me? these self loathing liberals have to demand sacrifices from outside of their own world, when very soon you wil be asked to make the most sacrifice in the history of humanity. When Peak oil comes and you have to get out onto the earth and do the permaculture work, the swales, gabions. and water harvesting , energy integrated systems for local living, food harvesting, ect. I cant wait to see you spoiled deflectors out on the fields picking the superweeds you have created through your GM mutated crops. Or dealing with all the pests from no longer able to manage a toxic soil that has been sprayed with toxic nitrates for generations. Do you realize how fucked you are? I do! thats a heavy burden to carry realizing the situation to its most detailed timeline. Katrina was a blessing for us ecologists. We have that as a perfect tool to show ones ready to shift how not to react during shock. Im through with fear. The solutions are so beautiful and I loved seeing the individuals in Israel , both Jews and arabs living together in the Arava desert , training in permaculture. This is the pathway to peace. So go on and spin your wheels about injustice to Palestine. blah blah blah blah blah!!!!!!!! You are fooling yourselves. Does it make you feel powerful? Does it make you feel POWERFUL to deflect all your unsustainable festering life styles onto Israel? Huh?!!!!!

Yes there is a horrible force of walls and fear to go around. The timeline has created a system of slavery for us all, whether its PA Gaza conditions or the looting of the US treasury and its mortgage system.
I have an eco dome that can live in the desert with no AC in cool comfort, cost less than 5 grand.
I am in love with the idea of a state of jewish people. I love the networking of it. The technology is an earth saver, Algae bio diesel, solar thermal, bio gas, ect.

In a RIGGED capitalism, profits come first before principle and there really is nothing to choose from. Anything that's pro-peace is rendered useless and even punishable whereas anything that is violent is "rewarded". By the way, notice that in Israel, Jordon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and all the human rights violating nations that receive massive amounts of foreign and military bribes from the US, there is NO MIDDLE CLASS. Then again, there really is no middle class in the US either.

Even yesterday Hamas, I mean Iran, rejects Rice and Abbas attempt for a PA state!!!!!!
These imperial liberal scapegoaters have selective hearing. I really am frustrated with the common dream -/ Alternet direction._I bet anyone of these jerk offs, if we get rid of the oil we get peace in Israel.
Americas piracy of oil dictates our foreign policy, and if using the Israeli landscape as a means to deflect the piracy of world resources so that, Darfur can remain oppressive because the Gava Tree supplies 90% of the world gum for paper, or that the Iranians build nuclear reactors when they are an oil rich nation, or that, hmm I can come up with more, wait... Oh ya, instead of owning up to your on food, water and energy, America has to accept the consolidated oneness that has infected your culture. So of course your going to look onto something else besides the unsustainable tipping point your so now in.

shame on you Alternet, looking at some AIPAC lobby as the main source of energy for the horrible direction humanity is in. Kabooom Post, I wonder how the reaaders of Alternet feel right now?

PS, those Army Camps for Jews around the world are not some brainwashing suicidal camps, they are normal healthy civilized beautiful networking experiences and to compare them to Hamas militias is so disgusting. That is the last straw and has me exposing myself to festering unsustainable jerks.

The author makes this idiotic comment “Is the cause of Israel advanced by mirroring the twisted militarism of Islamic fundamentalists?” As if Muslims invented militarism and it is so novel a notion that Jews could be as militant. Apparently the notion that Muslims are not the only militants on the planet today is news to some.

Some muslim guys can go to jail for going around with paint ball guns in the brush and the justice department gets a conviction for them that they are preparing a jihad, and nothing is happening to the organizers of this little outfit?

Blackwater can train american cops in paramilitary light infantry close quarter combat, and no one bats an eye!

Fanatics are fanatics are fanatics. They're all the same; brainwashed, as are some of these commentators, by ridiculous medieval religions which have no place in modern society. Want peace and a life of purpose? Dump religion. It was only created and propogated by the ancient powers in order to keep an ignorant and unlettered population in check.
Their reward for earthly suffering was in the afterlife. What utter nonsense.

...for now with comments that relate to Israel. Instead I'll watch as yellow, zionist, eretzyisrael (and whatever new Israeli apologist shows up) spew their tiresome, outdated and regularly disproven propaganda, call everyone who disagrees anti-semites, morons, rednecks, idiots, terrorists, etc. (which for SOME reason ol' Josh has no problem with) and let them hang themselves with their own arrogance, amorality, inhumanity and utterly disgusting narcissism.

I will let a growing chorus of informed AlterNet readers shoot down their illogic, burn their strawmen and expose them as the supremacists (albeit hiding in "victims" clothing) they truly are.

It is encouraging to watch Zionism self-destruct on a daily basis. This would not happen without the herculean efforts of yellow and his fellow travelers, who constantly reveal the black bankruptcy of their souls and their cause everytime they respond.

Please keep it up.

The REAL objective of Zionism
Posted by: non-onymous on Oct 18, 2007 8:44 AM

Maybe there is some clue as to why Israel might want these young Jews to have military training in this quotatation from Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the founder of the first militaristic Zionist youth movement, called Betar: "Betar signifies a generation that dedicates its life to the sole idea of a Jewish State, without recognizing any other ideals... Our aim is to make Betar such a world organism which, at a sign from the center, will be able simultaneously to move tens of thousands of hands in the cities of all countries... to make Eretz Yisrael the leading state of the civilized world, a country the customs and laws of which are to be followed BY THE WHOLE UNIVERSE." [Emphasis mine.]

I don't think that many liberals are aware that Zionistic Judaism is not an ideology of interest and concern only to Jews in their pursuance of a national homeland and to those who are its immediate victims. It is, rather, quite literally, as Jabotinsky makes clear, fundamentally universal in its scope and ambition. The Jews are awaiting the coming of their own messiah (Mashiach), and, unlike the Christian Messiah, his kingdom will not be a spiritual one, but very much of and on this earth. The Jewish messianic age will, like the prophesised Christian one, begin with a period of global warfare that will culminate in the triumph of the Mashiach and the rule of the Jews extending over the whole of the earth from their capital in Jerusalem. Those of us who are to be so ruled will just have to hope that the attitudes of our rulers will not be typified by those of the late former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin who said: "Our race is the Master Race. We are divine gods on this planet. We are as different from the inferior races as they are from insects. In fact, compared to our race, other races are beasts and animals, cattle at best. Other races are considered as human excrement. Our destiny is to rule over the inferior races. Our earthly kingdom will be ruled by our leader with a rod of iron. The masses will lick our feet and serve us as our slaves."

Anyone who reads my posts know that there is a vast difference between myself and zionist fanatics like eretzyisrael and others who defend Israel's illegal occupation and its brutal attack on Lebanon. The point is that OPELUBOY and others of his ilk who have been justly banned ARE NOTHING BUT LIARS!! They don't fear zionists and Likudniks because they are in a symbiotic relationship with them. Progressive Jews like myself, Josh Holland, Norm Solomon and, even Noam Chomsky, whom they've maligned as "zionist", are a much bigger threat to them than any west bank settler or Israeli PM Ehud Olmert. Why?? Because we want to bring justice and peace to the Middle East and create a viable two state solution which will hopefully, one day, meld into a single democratic secular state of all its citizenry. This would end the murderous conflict and make their ethnic hate and fanaticism unappealing. Their fanatical politics would lose its force and they would become irrelevant.

The more I protest that I want a progressive solution to the problem of Israel/Palestine the more they smear me with taunts and epithets of Likudnik, Zionazi, Israeli apologist and Jewish Supremicist!! This is because they simply want to create the impression that all Jews are "Zionazi" fanatics so as to whip up such opprobrium against Jews that violence results. Make no mistake!! The end game of these ignorant fanatics is a major pogrom against innocent Jews!! This is why they relentlessly paint all Jews as spies, traitors, enemies of the US and conspiritors. And that is why they most fear progressive Jews who are increasingly becoming the majority.

Why did they have to carve up Palestine and split it in two?
The palestinians gladly sold land to Jews, and permitted them to live there within there country. And they did so for many years in peace. The death and suffering came after they formed Israel and broke up the country.

That would be like Christians carving up the US into two countries, one for Christians, and one for everyone else.

The whole idea of Israel is racist and exclusionistic.
They even put up a huge wall to keep the 'non-jews' out.
And the fact that only Jews can go train in Israel.

I don't think the Jews would like it if Christians became exclusive, and kicked them out of traditional Christian countries like the US and Canada.

Leave out any and all religious bullshittery,

To send your child to train with the IDF is to send your child to a terrorist camp that is approved by the Bush administration and any other corrupt politician that has been bought by AIPAC.

IDF practices every single last one of the NAZI styles of occupation including concentration camps, collective punishment, walling off neighborhoods, and disappearing peaceful protesters in the night. They even use palestinian children as bullet shields when they are attacking palestinians that might have guns.

Only the most ignorant of the ignorant, blinded by some sort of republican-fueled hate propaganda could send their kid to such a disgusting place.

Instead of making camps to promote the arab holocaust that is well under way at the hands of the IDF- america should hold them accountable for their war crimes and also hold bush accountable for his war crimes.

NEVER AGAIN!!! unless it's arabs right? it's ok to kill them like dogs and do the holocaust all over again like we didn't learn from the last time this happened in Nazi Germany. Compare the tactics of Israel's invasion of palestine to the tactics of Nazis invading France. They are identical- just replace the word jew with arab and replace the word Nazi with IDF.

I went to undergraduate and graduate school at two different institutions with very large Jewish populations, but I never heard of this program. When I mentioned it to my wife (Mexican), she looked surprised and said, "Of course! My high school Jewish friends all went to this! One of them even met a South African that she wanted to marry."

My wife and I went to high school in the early and middle 60's, so apparently this program has a long history.

Only Israel benefits from these endless Middle East wars. Iraq is the beginning. As we commit war-crimes in Baghdad, the US gov't commits treason at home by opening mail, eliminating habeas corpus, using the judiciary to steal private lands, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon and Wikipedia, conducting warrantless wiretaps and engaging in illegal wars on behalf of AIPAC's 'money-men'. Soon, another US false-flag operation will occur (sinking of an Aircraft Carrier by Mossad) and the US will invade Iran.. Then we'll invade Syria, then Saudi Arabia, then Lebanon (again) then ....
