Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld Diagnosed as 'Waraholics'

By Rick Gell, AlterNet. Posted September 12, 2006.

With the Democrats and the mainstream media enabling them, administration leaders are five years into a major war binge. They won't stop until they've hit bottom.

waraholic (war-a-hol-ic) adj. 1. of, pertaining to, or caused by war 2. a person addicted to armed conflict 3. a person suffering from a diseased condition caused by an excessive use of war

On Sept. 12, 2001, the waraholics fell off the wagon and Democrats became the great enablers.

For waraholics, the world is simple -- good and bad, friend or foe, patriot or traitor. God is always on their side.

For waraholics, there are no bad wars, only wars badly fought. Vietnam wasn't a failure, but a missed opportunity.

For waraholics, problems are solved with more troops, more bombing, more strategy, more tactics, and, of course, more wars.

Gulf War I wasn't a success, but a failure to finish the job.

For waraholics, negotiation, diplomacy and international aid are for wimps. And the U.N. just gets in the way.

And while a "just war" makes sense to just about everyone, for a waraholic it is the answer to almost every worldwide problem.

And like all addicts, waraholic will invariably binge, hit bottom and leave a trail of broken lives, debt and sorrow.

The waraholics' latest binge, after a long quiet period following a major bender in Vietnam, started five years ago -- on Sept. 11, 2001. Using a tragic event as an excuse to fall off the wagon is classic addict.

So a horrific attack, designed and executed by a band of crazies who had been rejected by their own families, all major Islamic leaders and most governments were elevated to a new status. Instead of classifying them as the fringe, cultish wackos they were, the waraholics declared war. But since this was not a state-sponsored attack, it had to be a "war on," not a "war with." And as any fool should know, "war-ons" are for morons.

For the leading waraholics -- Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney -- this was not their first "war on." In their first jobs together, they ran the "War on Poverty" for Richard Nixon. That war was won in New Orleans last September. Another popular "war on," the "War on Drugs" was also won in the mid '80s, when Steve Rubbel surrendered to Dick Bennett in a signing ceremony on the floor of Studio 54.

Like the gambleraholic, when the waraholics won a hand in Afghanistan, instead of holding pat, focusing on their winnings and building one nation at a time -- they thought they could "beat the mosque" in Iraq. Counting cards -- Hussein-Cards this time, they played down each loss and promised bigger wins just around the corner.

Like the alcoholic, they see everyone else as a teetotaler, or worse -- someone who can't drink like a man. Utter the words "I've had enough" and it becomes "cut and run." Loose of tongue, they lash out at anyone who suggests "moderation and restraint" and see every alternative as that most dreaded concept for addicts -- "therapy."

Like the sexaholic, there is always a good reason to keep the ones they love in the dark. Secrecy is part of the allure and a necessary evil. To protect everyone they care about from being hurt, of course. Danger is ignored. Raising the ante becomes the only way to sustain the rush as they become increasingly careless. The countless victims are just collateral damage. Until it is too late.

And like any addict, the question is never whether they achieve their aims of personal pleasure or riches -- an addict can often plow forward for years and years, sometimes even win the jackpot, score with the hot babe or be the "life of the party." The waraholic might even lead to democracy somewhere -- someday -- but at what unfathomable cost? And to whom?

And then there are the Enablers.

And in this case the Democrats and press have been more than eager to oblige. Intelligence and law enforcement were the right answers to terrorism. Afghanistan was more than we could handle in the nation-building and democracy department. The Democrats didn't "recoil" and "curl up in a little ball," as Tom DeLay recently claimed, to the terrorists -- they recoiled and curled up to Tom DeLay and the war-hungry neocons. Democrats ignored their better international instincts and gave the workaholics an open bar.

And like all enablers, Dems have been abused and smeared in the harshest terms imaginable -- without a strong and forceful response. Karl Rove can accuse liberals of seeing Nazi concentration camps and Soviet gulags when they "see the United States" and not get punched in the face. And while I don't classify Hillary as a waraholic, she was in Washington during their last joy ride and knew the history of this terrible gang. And she still handed them the keys to the car. Like all enablers, she should have known better. And then some.

And now, five years later, it is looking like the waraholics may be approaching bottom. Afghanistan is unraveling. The Taliban is rocking, Islamic fundamentalism is winning in the countryside and the drugs are flowing at record levels. I don't need to tell you about Iraq. The waraholics' speeches are increasingly slurred -- with Hitler and Communism and, yes, even the laughable domino theory back in play. You know things are bad.

Have they reached bottom? Or will they not stop until we are in Iran? We may get to find out -- since the press and the Dems are still enabling more than it may seem.

Take this pathetic exchange with Tim Russert by Democratic senatorial candidate Bob Casey and you will understand everything you need to know about why Rove and company are still in charge. When Russert asks Bob the standard "knowing what you know today" Iraq question, sinking Kerrey and Clark, here was Casey's response:

Tim, on the war in Iraq, if, if, if a lot of Americans knew now -- if they knew then what they know now, they would, they would have thought that this war was the war that shouldn't have been fought based upon the misleading of this administration. Here's what I think has to happen in Iraq today.

Russert: So you would not vote for it today.

Casey: Based upon the information that we have now, I think that, that a lot of Americans would have serious doubts. I'm not sure there would have even been a vote on Iraq that early in the ...

Russert: But in '05 you said you'd vote for it. Would you today in '06 vote for it?

Casey: Based upon the evidence that was presented then, yes, which I think has been -- was misleading, and I think it was faulty. The intelligence was faulty.

Russert: But today, today is no. Today you would vote no.

Casey: Today -- if we knew then what we know now, sure. I think there wouldn't have been a vote, and I think people would have changed.
And if you have any lingering doubts whether we are captive of waraholics -- check out these common indicator questions -- three "yes" answers and you are supposed to seek immediate counseling. How would Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld fare?

Do you think about the activity with high frequency?
Are you using [war] to solve problems and feel better about yourself? Is it going on longer than you planned?

Are you selling everything to finance your habit?
Have you ever considered an illegal act to finance or support your habit?
Are you being dishonest about the time and commitment necessary to support your addiction?
Do you deny the negative consequences to others as a result of your addiction?
Do you participate in high-risk or normally unacceptable behavior?
Have you ever had a complete loss of memory?
Do you lash out at others who try and stop your behavior?

Dr. James Fearing of the National Counseling Center in Minneapolis lists these signs:

No limits.
Lying.
Harmful results.
Improper behavior.
Misplaced priorities.
Rapture.
Fixation and preoccupation.
Escapism.
Excessive spending.
Despair.

Downright scary, isn't it?

Despair may be the only item on the list these waraholics don't feel yet -- despair is left for all of us.

Anyone who still believes that the Iraq war should have been started by the Bushies is a waraholic drunk, on denial of numerous truth factors spread widely through various media. The only way we can save America as a free society is to end the war asap, bring the troops home asap and have a decent presidency asap.

The Bush administration SHOULD take the 12 step program, but ask any drunk/drug addict what the first step is and they will tell you it is "ADMITTING YOU HAVE A PROBLEM"!!! Don't hold your breath waiting for THAT to happen.

Another step (don't know which one it is) is "TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS" and "MAKING AMENDS FOR SAID ACTIONS"!!! If you haven't suffocated from waiting for them to take the first step, you will definitely die holding your breath when waiting for these other steps to happen. ;)

What will you call the new president?

So our current president is a war-aholic because he is combating muslim terrorist. I do not fully agree with the way the war in Iraq has been handled, but we do not live in a perfect world, run by me (or you).

So we have now had 5 presidents that have been called "the great satan" by muslim extermist. Dem and Rep. Countless terror attacks on our people by muslim extermist in the past 5 administrations. It should be clear to you by now, we are at war, reguardless of who is sitting in the white house. If we continue to side step the problem, it will only get bigger.

Perhaps your anger would better benifit all of us if you directed it at the people who wish to harm you (and me) most, the muslim extermist. Not your own government that was elected by your fellow country men.

Again, I know your not happy about who is sitting in the white house and when his term is up, he will be gone. The muslim terrorist will still be here and we do need to focus on the problem together, no matter who sits in office. I'm not asking anyone to be a boot licker. Before passing judgment on who ever makes it into office next, please take into consideration all the attacks we have suffered at the hands of muslim extemist and the real need to confront it, so our childeren do not have to worry about being blown up on the way to work.

Zbigniew Brzezinski revealed a hidden Fact that on July 3, 1979, unknown to the public and American Congress that President Jimmy Carter secretly authorized $500 million to create an international terrorist movement that would spread Islamic fundamentalism in Central Asia and "de-stabilize" the Soviet Union...
The CIA called this Operation Cyclone and in the following years poured $4 billion into setting up Islamic training schools in Pakistan (Taliban means "student").

These people were sent to the CIA's spy training camp in Virginia, where future members of al-Qaeda were taught "sabotage skills" - terrorism.
Others were recruited at an Islamic school in Brooklyn, New York, In Pakistan; they were directed by British MI6 officers and trained by the SAS.

"Bottoming Out" -- Wrong paradigm
Posted by: AdamSelene40 on Sep 12, 2006 8:12 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
War mongers are thought to have 'bottomed out' until they've gotten their country beaten, conquered invaded and occupied. That's not really likely for the United States .. and anything less is just a 'temporary setback,' for which Defeatists and Traitors can be blamed.

Thinking of political bad guys as 'sick' is very comfortable and self-reassuring because it implies they're weak, defective, pitiable, pathetic, contemptable, and inferior -- rather than immediately dangerous.

Sigmund Freud created a perfectly valid, and very entertaining analysis of Naziism as a neurotic disorder with psychotic and delusional elements. Only problem: about 1/3 of Europe and America was more or less pro-Nazi and clearly, 50 million Germans couldn't ALL be 'crazy' -- certainly not on the say-so of sex obsessed Jewish fad doctor.

So "focus, people."

The Rethuglicans do what they do because it brings them rewards they want. Neither they nor their families will suffer any 'hangovers' from their killing binges. "Others" will pay, and pay happily.

So 'cuteness' and 'disire to be published' aside ...

The Rethuglicans need to be DEFEATED ... not whimsically denigrated.

Cheney and Rumsfeld are signers of the PNAC 1997 declaration of intent letter - WAR and MORE WAR. The "Decider" is the alcoholic, none too bright, egoist jerk "hand-maiden" of the Dominionists (PNAC, et al) and is a warmonger by association.

Google PNAC and start reading.

Who are Cheney and Rumsfeld?
Posted by: thoughtcriminal on Sep 12, 2006 12:19 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The Rumsfeld-Cheney axis is worth looking at because it a classic case of 'public-private partnerships", the military-industrial complex, and personal greed. Their secretive operations have been described by Bush insiders (Powell Aide Blasts Rice, Cheney- Rumsfeld 'Cabal' by Jim Lobe). What it looks like is a state-within-a-state - a secret government within the larger government whose members are united by a shared criminal knowledge.

Cheney went from politics to business and back, following in the footsteps of the Reagan-era players like George Schultz and Casper Weinberger (both of href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechtel">Bechtel Engineering). After the reign of Bush I, Cheney became the CEO of Halliburton. See Halliburton Agenda: Intersections of Oil and Politics (DN). The take home point is that Cheney represents oil and energy sectors.

Rumsfeld, on the other hand, serves the pharmaceutical and defense industries. He left the public sector in 1977 and has served on numerous corporate boards - Searle Pharmaceuticals, Gilead, etc. Rumsfeld avoids direct dealings with defense companies but has holdings in them through third party relationships - stock owned by holding companies and so on.

See this story that appeared when Rumsfeld was tapped for Defense Secretary: Rumsfeld: Star Warrior Returns by Michael Klare. It was clear that he was going to try and create his own private high-tech military.

A Pentagon group called "The Defense Science Board" has played a central role in Rumsfeld's military power grab. These are the people who were suggesting 'provoking terrorists to attack the US':

The Pentagon Plan to Provoke Terrorist Attacks by Chris Floyd -
"According to a classified document prepared for Rumsfeld by his Defense Science Board, the new organization--the "Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG)"--will carry out secret missions designed to "stimulate reactions" among terrorist groups, provoking them into committing violent acts which would then expose them to "counterattack" by U.S. forces."

William Schneider, Jr. is the chairman of this group, whose members all seem to be at the intellectual head of the military-industrial complex: Defense Science Board members

Rumsfeld and his cronies view this whole arrangement as a route to personal wealth and power. Their goal is to funnel large amounts of tax dollars to private military contractors, and the role of the Board is to provide intellectual justification for Star Wars ballistic anti-missle programs, offensive use of nuclear weapons, and so on. This is just like to what Rumsfeld did with 'avian flu' - give billions to his old company Gilead (holder of the Tamiflu patent), which will not help with flu!

Rumsfeld has also exerted control over the military via his henchman, Stephen A. Cambone. This individual is more powerful than Condi Rice, much less-known, and is at the heart of the torture scandal: The Secret World of Stephen Cambone, Rumsfeld's Enforcer: By J. St. Claire.

Rumsfeld and Cheney seem bent on keeping the US military actively engaged all over the world, all while using government contracts to (i) enrich themselves and their cronies and (ii) maintain a firm grip on political power.

I’m wondering about the enablers. I’ve read here before that the liberal Democratic base consists of a fairly large number of people. But, rather than using those numbers to work for the changes we would like to see, we keep enabling the enablers.

Don't confuse a "diagnosis" with an epithet
Posted by: Sojourner on Sep 12, 2006 2:53 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
!2 Steps does no 'diagnosing.' To quote, "No one can decide for another whether he/she is an alcoholic."

A familiar form of attack is to label an opponent as a 'this' or a 'that.' Ad hominem arguments manage to stray from street fights into the most psuedo-sophisticated circles. But it's still just a curse.

Psychobabble is defined as the attribution of symptomology without an accompanying treatment program. Legitimate diagnosis does not call other people names. The purpose of diagnosis is to determine which treatment program is appropriate. So diagnosis, when used honestly, never stands alone.

The use of diagnostic terminology in an argument says more about the user than the usee: Why do you have a need to call someone a name?

In its history, the 12 Step movement has been perverted periodically by its misuse. Please try to avoid repeating that.

Be clear: Bush/Cheney are shitheads.

Hit bottom I think not. The bottom I want them to hit is a few feet under their feet, which they fail to reach hanging at the end of a rope around their criminal necks. The way to restore our countries credibility around the world is to try these war criminals for their crimes and hang them in public. I volunteer to pull the lever. I am not usually in favor of capitol punishment but this exception would be w/o error. God save America.

"Terrorism" Doesn't Exist
Posted by: sofla100 on Sep 12, 2006 7:12 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This entire "terrorism" thing is a Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld fabrication that does not even exist. The most you could say is that it was a criminal event when the WTC was hit. Now, Osama and some cohorts had some axes to grind over the USA basing troops in Saudi Arabia. So, they organized and carried out the WTC attack. Basically, a gang of at most a few hundred holed up in backwoods Afghanistan did this. That is all there was to it, until Bush attacked Iraq. Sadaam, back then, already was after Osama and actually wanted him captured or killed. But, when the USA took out Sadaam, Al Quaeda of course grew exponentially. The USA after all had attacked, without provocation, a soverign Muslim state. This then is the irony and the reality of it. We are all ten thousand times more likely, even today, to die in a plan wreck or certainly in a car accident then any real "terrorist attack." As for GW's "war on terrorism" he is no nearer yet to capturing Osama. This entire gang of Bush and company has fooled millions of Americans with a trumped up war and an enemy they themselves have now created.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and co. are doing exactly what Osama bin Laden wanted them to:enraging even more Muslims by raiding their homes even more, which prompts them to join Al-Qaida or some other terrorist group. You can't get rid of an angry bull by pissing off bulls nearby that previously weren't. Waging war on their lands, justified or not, makes them feel that they have to join a terrorist group or else allow their land and friends to be destroyed. Of course, unjustified war antagonizes a lot more Muslims than justified war would. IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11. There is no rational, morally acceptable reason to attack it at all, let alone continue attacking it.
I'm the only U.S. citizen I know of that never supported invading Iraq; I didn't believe the claims that a secular government was in league with Muslim extremists. I think Cheney (he's the de facto president as far as I'm concerned) and all his lackeys are doing all this madness while full aware of its counter-productiveness with only one agenda:making more and more and more money. They're not just waraholics; they're oiloholics. The United States's government is run by its businesses, which could not care less about anything besides their precious money.
If only the American population could wake up out of its mental hibernation and join the rest of the world in its extreme opposition to the Bush Administration, because it is destroying everything in every way they can; the Middle East, foreign relations, the environment, the U.S. itself, and the entire planet, all for just money money money money money. Then again, the greedy rich monsters of the United States will never give up their greed... How did this happen to what was once a great country looked up to as a land of the free? Oh yeah, the enablers. I wish someone in power here had all three of a brain, a conscience, and a backbone.
