Pulling A Nixon On Us?

By Stephen Pizzo, News for Real. Posted November 18, 2005.

It took 36 years to confirm that Nixon lied. Do we have to wait another 36 years to find out whether the Bush administration lied to us too?

When did this happen?

WASHINGTON - White House advisers convene secret sessions about the political dangers of revelations that American troops committed atrocities in the war zone ….. in the face of an increasingly unpopular war, they wonder at the impact on support at home. The best way out of the war, they agree, is to prop up a new government that they hope can unite the fractured foreign land… The President, meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told them to pull out all the stops. "don't worry, we're taking the political heat. "Publicly, we say one thing," he told aides. "Actually, we do another."

You are forgiven for assuming that was from George Bush and Dick Cheney's talking points the other day. Actually, it's straight out of newly-released Nixon administration documents from 1969.

Back then Nixon was trying to worm out of blow-back from the Mai Lai massacre and his illegal bombing of neutral Cambodia. (Full Story)

The reason I bring this up is because on Wednesday our current President and Vice President were busy furiously denying that they lied to get us into another war.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 - Vice President Dick Cheney joined the White House attack on critics of the Iraq war Wednesday night when he told a conservative group that senators who had suggested that the Bush administration manipulated prewar intelligence were making "one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city." (Full Story)

It took 36 years to confirm that Nixon lied. So, do we now have to wait another 36 years to find out whether or not this administration's lied to us too?  Should we have to? After all, democracy is just a sham if citizens are forced to vote in the dark.

The President and VP say they did not lie ("I'm not a crook"). Instead, they accuse those who say they did of being the liars. Okay -- so let's find out who's lying. The Senate should get on with its Phase 2 investigation.

But considering the Senate is under control of the ruling party, a Senate investigation is not enough. Things have gone too far now. Instead, Congress should impanel an independent commission, a la the 9/11 Commission -- and considering that the war in Iraq is an ongoing conflict, time is of the essence. This commission's mandate should be narrowed to the question at hand: Did the administration make an honest mistake -- or exaggerate, manipulate, misrepresent or flat-out lie in their stated reasons for attacking Iraq? And get that answer to us; not 36 years or 36 months from now, but within 4 months.

It can be done just that quickly, too. We learned, with the release of the Nixon documents, that the answers are already right there on paper over at the White House. They were there 36 years ago, and they are there today. Go get them. If they contain real secrets, keep the parts that deserve secrecy, secret. But expose the lies. Lies are not secrets. They are simply lies -- who knows, they might even be evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Has this administration pulled a Nixon on us? ("Publicly, we say one thing. Actually, we do another.")

Don't you think we should find out -- and much sooner rather than too late?

But I would not hold your breath, if you think that is going to happen anytime before 2006 elections. Bush fixed it so his father's papers, Clinton's papers and His papers are sealed for 40? years. One of his presidential edicts. I want these two empeached more than I have want many things for years. I do not think we can survive three more years.

Do you mean to tell me that Richard Nixon was a liar? I'm shocked. Shocked. Bad as he was, he looks like George Washington compared to the hideous fool we have today. Say what you want to about the Trickster, he was a pretty smart guy; At times even brilliant. Of the 20th century presidents only Woodrow Wilson was smarter. Whereas George W. Bush....Well, let's face it: George is dumber than dogshit. As for VP comparisons, Dick Cheney actually makes me nostalgic for Spiro Agnew. This may sound like a cruel thing to say but, for the good of the country, that fatal heart attack we've all been expecting for the last five years has got to come any day now. I can't believe it's come to this.

Throw Out Business As Usual Vote For The Right Person Not The Party

America has always had it's "check/balances" in place thanks to our brilliant forefathers who wrote our Constitution. They gave us an opportunity to create a "better Nation" and give us the right to pick/choose the right person to "oversee" our government and follow the laws. To protect our citizens from those who wish us harm, to give us the right to control the direction in which we wanted the United States to venture in this world.

Now, it just a matter of a couple of hundred years, we, the American public have become, too lazy to vote (let the other guy do that) , too lazy to keep informed about laws and changes made to our Constitution, too lazy to research the background of those running for election and we end up in this disgusting mess of corruption and lies from those that have been elected (by some Americans) to run our country.

This has all come about because of LAZINESS and the brainwashing of "you must vote for "YOUR" party (DEM/REP) because "that's how it's always been!". It's just so much easier to vote ALL one way of the other instead of using your common sense and voting for the best qualified person for the position.

Once you've elected our government leaders in place, and then later you find out that this was a MISTAKE, it then is almost impossible to correct until election time rolls around again.

In the meantime, our system of government has "gone down the tubes" to the point of disrespect. It's mindboggleing to see how the American public enabled this to happen. We now do nothing but complain about the degrading standards that's slowly bringing down what was a" MIGHTY NATION OF RESPECTED CITIZENS" to that of a Nation who's dispised by many of the world's populous. has been at this time.

We all had our chances during the last presidential elections, to vote out this inept administration that's creating havoc around the world. Laziness allowed it to remain.

Lessons learned, I hope. Vote for the BEST, QUALIFED, Person, forget about being Democrat/Republican make sure the runner is going to do his/her job that's required and not just want to be elected to boost their own ego and really do nothing for the American people.

We all are at fault for allowing our Nation to be caught up in this vicious circle of lies and deciet. FELLOW AMERICANS, "SMARTEN UP, VOTE WISELY"!!

President or Dictator?

That we have had so many presidents within my lifetime con the American public doesn't speak well for Democracy. It wasn't only the Republicans with Bush and Nixon but the Democrats had Kennedy and Johnson who lied about the Viet Nam war. Is it better to have elected leaders who only pretend to be governing in our interest or a dictator who honestly scorns the public.? We are ruled by the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned about. But now, it is richer and more powerful. It is no longer just the arms industry but the pharmaceutical, energy, insurance, and a host of other industries along with the corporate media that controls both parties. They are united by their common interest to make a profit at the expense of all of us. The people must recognize that our two political parties are working against us. We must take control of both parties. The way to do this is for each of us to tell both parties what issue is most important to him or her, and refuse to support a party that doesn't agree with him or her on this issue. Yes, Bush acted on inteligence that later turned out to be false, but he and most of the Democrats were misled (probably by Chabli). But it's over and done with. To pull the troops out prematurely would effectively mean surrender. And then the insurgency can take over Iraq and start sending their suicide bombers to America. But not to worry, we will then have our troups on U.S. soil to try to defend us like they are now trying to do in Iraq.

Most of the public realizes this. They think Bush is doing a terrible job but they support a responsible timetable.

The Democrats apparently think this is a big enough issue that they can use it to win the next election. I think they are wrong. If they keep pushing on it they will lose the next election because of it. They should be concentrating on an issue that resonates with the vast majority of the people: Our corrupt political system.

But they are a part of that and they don't want to give up the corporate cash any more than the Republicans do. But if they wash their hands of it, educate the public on what it's costing them in taxes (about $3000 annually per taxpayer), they stand a chance of being the majority once again.

As a Republican I'd like to see the Dems provide stiff competition in the next election. They are heading in the opposite direction.

We have no democracy here.

We are being led to believe that we have a democracy, but we do not. We have a government that allows a man to steal the presidency not once but twice. We vote on machines that distort all reality, yet they are still being used. We don't have instant runoff voting which is the only thing that can make things get back in working order -- well that and a few other things. We have a media that is owned by the corporate elite that continually puts out their propaganda and distorts all reality to suit their agenda. Our democracy has been stolen from us...and, truthfully, I don't know how we are going to get it back.

Dictators: I know them well

Dictators and bestial rulers, instituted corruption, underhanded public policy, vindictive and vengeful officialdom were among the reasons I emmigrated to the United States to live the rest of my life in a democratic society - the "land of the free and the brave." With this Bush II government it's deja-vu all over again for me. And worse: most Third World despotic leaders now openly brag about their heinous policies by touting the examples of American leadership. I'm thus resolved that I have no where else to run. I'll stay here and do my bit to expose the crooks we have running our lives. Perhaps a good start for others is to join the Impeachment bandwagon. By the way, why is that momentous movement so underreported? Why has it become our modern-day Underground Railroad? Is the Progressive media so cowed by this government. President Clinton lied about a fling his very wife forgave, yet we vociferously impeached him even though his actions spilled no American or foreign blood. This Bush II Administration has blatantly lied across board, and continues to use their cronies and ill-begotten wealth to veil and manipulate the truth. Thousands Americans have died in the process. So many more thousands have been maimed for life. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, most of them innocent children, have perished in the melieu of this cooked-up and senseless war. And worse, Americans living or traveling abroad, since Bush II must now disguise their once proud identity or risk being targets of scorn or bodily harm. How long will this charade thrive? Can we afford three more years of this? Or do we really think subsequent US Presidencies will have or garner the moral capacity to heal America's battered image in the world? I think the world will be more forgiving of our apparent complicity if we hold the Bush Administration accountable. Impeachment will be a good start.

There is no question that George W. and his fellow war criminals lied. There was reams of reliable information in the public domain which both the administration and the CIA should have studied that disputes the administrations claims about WMD.

In a report to the Security Council on Feb. 14/03, Hans Blix, Executive Director of UNMOVIC (second UN inspection team) stated that "Through the inspections conducted so far, we have obtained a good knowledge of...it's missile capability...access to sites has so far been without problems...UNMOVIC has not found any such weapons." Hans Blix also asked for a few more months to allow his inspectors to finish their job but apparently WMD were not a top priority given that Bush couldn't wait.

Scott Ritter, the head inspector of the first inspection team, UNSCOM, claimed categorically that the threat posed by Iraq was zero. Rahul Mahajan, head of the IAEA reported to the Security Council on March 27/99 that "there is no indication that Iraq possesses nuclear weapons."

The inspectors of these agencies had the best information about WMD in Iraq and yet, the administration was still warning the nation about the threat of WMD in Iraq.

You decide whose telling the truth.

There is nothing to "surrender"

I also question your use of the word "surrender" and your assumption that our leaving Iraq today would somehow mean more suicide bombers here in the US. Thanks to this Administration's total ineptitude in everything it has touched, (including not finishing the job in Afghanistan, which is now becoming another failed war and where our Special Forces are being decimated), every country on the planet that has Muslims is now a potential threat to us. In fact, I would argue that our leaving Iraq as quickly as possible would actually make us SAFER, because we would be taking away one of the biggest sources of "oxygen" that is fanning the flames of the insurgency - our very presence there.

It no longer matters HOW many troops or how much money we pump into Iraq. Remember the rhetoric about Vietnam -the "domino" theory - that if we pulled out of Vietnam, then all of Southeast Asia (and maybe ALL of Asia) would go Communist? More empty rhetoric and fearmongering that wasted American lives and money. Iraq has become Vietnam 2.0, and it's time the Republicans admitted it (and thankfully, some of them are starting to see the light).

Regardless of whether or not we can get Bush impeached, convicted of war crimes, or even to admit he was wrong, we need to withdraw today before we do any more damage. The argument that we need to fix things before we go is cruel. You don't fix a sore thumb with a hammer. All we'll ever do is create more and more hatred the longer we stay. This is the goal, to create an enemy where there was none.

In case you're not sure if what we do will cause hatred, follow this link to see some photos the corporate media has refused to show for over a year. Beware, this is gory, don't go there if you're not ready to feel it in your gut. http://dahrjamailiraq.com/gallery/

A current poll taken in Wisconsin shows some interesting results on the war and what to do now:

Do you think the US should keep our troops in Iraq until the situation has been stabilized or do you think we should set a timetable to bring them home in the near future

Keep them there until stabilized 45%

Timetable to bring them home 51%

Other (vol.) 2%

Not Sure 2%

Refused 0%

It took 50 tears for the truth about how we were flim-flammed into WW2 by the Roosevelt Administraion,in 2015
we'll get the goods on the Kennedy rub-out. Maybe by then we'll have the goods on Bush,9/11,and the 'real terrorists'
put on public display. The truth is the whole system is corrupted. Everyone of the the so-called representativesthat gave
the President all the power to use any means necessary just by calling someone a Terrorist, sold us all out. Endorsing the most draconian of ploicy while traumatized believing in well construded sound bites and enough limited information so as to 'guide' their actions in the direction
the administration wanted, makes them unfit for the job and human, they should have taken a standing 8 count. Now the Dems say their showing 'backbone' , sorry folks you are'nt. If that was the case they would'nt have let this go down. To say 'The Repubs have the votes to pass anything they want' and then sheepishly vote for it,is to be an asskisser. To later soapbox yourself as an opposing voice to act as the hearld is to be a hypocrite.
None of the people on the Hill want the truth of any kind told.
Far too many of them have very nasty skeletons they don't want out. When the VP is guilty of Treason stemming from Iran/Contra back in the 80's. When the WMD's the administration says it knows Iraq bought and used are for real, they're correct. We have the reciepts from selling them to him to use on Iran. Whom the VP sold weapons to 25 yrs back, that's the kind of stuff you don't want kept in the public eye. None of the elected ones deserve the jobs they have. If we believe any of the hornswaggle that comes out of any of the two parties then we deserve this tyranny as mush as anyone. If on the other hand you think these fools deserve to be rode out on a rail with a sound Tar and Feathering. That the Governance of the People should be by the People. That wealth does not mean power, but, responsibility. That to be 'Elected' is to be put in a position of 'Srevice' not Overlord.
Then we all have to stand up for the truth. We have been lied to for decades. Only now have we started to wake up. The newest lie is 'If we pull out now,we let the terrorists win'. Guess what, they did in 2000 and 2004 it won't matter what party 'wins' this war is directed by people that are'nt even elected. To stop them you have to go outside the farce of the two party system.

John Dean, a former Counsel to the President of the United States, wrote in FindLaw, “To put it bluntly, if Bush has taken Congress and the nation into war based on bogus information, he is cooked. Manipulation or deliberate misuse of national security intelligence data, if proven, could be ‘a ‘high crime’ under the Constitution's impeachment clause. It would also be a violation of federal criminal law, including the broad federal anti-conspiracy statute, which renders it a felony ‘to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose.’

Colonel Sam Gardiner (USAF, Ret.) has identified 50 false news stories created and leaked by a secretive White House propaganda apparatus.

Gardiner has credentials. He has taught at the National War College, the Air War College and the Naval Warfare College and was a visiting scholar at the Swedish Defense College.

According to Gardiner, "It was not bad intelligence" that lead to the quagmire in Iraq, "It was an orchestrated effort [that] began before the war" that was designed to mislead the public and the world. Gardiner's research lead him to conclude that the US and Britain had conspired at the highest levels to plant "stories of strategic influence" that were known to be false.

The Times of London described the $200-million-plus US operation as a "meticulously planned strategy to persuade the public, the Congress, and the allies of the need to confront the threat from Saddam Hussein."

The multimillion-dollar propaganda campaign run out of the White House and Defense Department was, in Gardiner's final assessment "irresponsible in parts" and "might have been illegal."

"Washington and London did not trust the peoples of their democracies to come to the right decisions," Gardiner explains. Consequently, "Truth became a casualty. When truth is a casualty, democracy receives collateral damage." For the first time in US history, "we allowed strategic psychological operations to become part of public affairs... [W]hat has happened is that information warfare, strategic influence, [and] strategic psychological operations pushed their way into the important process of informing the peoples of our two democracies."

Well, if it makes the President a liar for making statements based on the best intell at the time, then the rest of these illustrious leaders MUST bear the same taint.
STARTING IN 1998, they said the following publically:

-- President Bill Clinton: "[M]ark my words, [Saddam] will develop weapons of mass destruction. He will deploy them, and he will use them."
-- Vice President Al Gore: "Saddam's ability to produce and deliver weapons of mass destruction poses a grave threat ... to the security of the world."
-- Secretary Of State Madeleine Albright: "[W]e are concerned ... about [Saddam's] ability in the long run ... to threaten all of us with weapons of mass destruction."
-- National Security Adviser Sandy Berger: "[Saddam] will rebuild his arsenal of weapons of mass destruction, and someday, some way, I am certain, he will use that arsenal again."
-- U.N. Ambassador Bill Richardson: "Facts are facts. Iraq has been deceiving the international community with the weaponization of nerve gas. It's that simple."
-- Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.): "[Saddam] is too dangerous of a man to be given carte blanche with weapons of mass destruction."
-- Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.): "[Saddam's] chemical and biological weapons capabilities are frightening."

-- Former Vice President Al Gore: "We know that [Saddam] has stored away secret supplies of biological weapons and chemical weapons throughout his country."
-- Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.): "We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."
-- Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.): "Saddam's existing biological and chemical weapons capabilities pose real threats to America today, tomorrow."
-- Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.): "These weapons represent an unacceptable threat."
-- Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.): "Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capability to wage biological and chemical warfare and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."
