Anti-War Voices from Montana

By Rose Aguilar, AlterNet. Posted September 26, 2005.

Missoula's Take Back Our Country march was a vibrant example of 'red state' Montana's progressive side.

Far from the steps of the White House, about 100 peace activists braved the cold and light rain Saturday night in Missoula, Montana to rally in conjunction with the anti-war march in Washington, D.C.

"It's important to remember that there are people everywhere in America who value peace and international cooperation, not just Washington D.C. and San Francisco," says Gerry Blackman, 65. "I don't think we can discount the numbers of these people everywhere in America."

Missoula's "Take Back Our Country, Bring Back Our Troops" rally was sponsored by the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center and Code Pink. Missoula, which is referred to by locals as the "liberal bastion" of Montana, gave John Kerry 52% of the vote in the 2004 presidential election.

"Missoula is the one place in Montana where a rally like this can happen on a fairly large scale," says Blackman, who recently returned from Uzbekistan as a Peace Corps volunteer. "I'm originally from Great Falls, Montana, which is a little different; maybe not so progressive. It's more content with the war because they support a military base. I've lived there most of my adult life. I've lived in Missoula about 17 years. This is a community that supports and mirrors my attitudes about peace and our international relations. It's a very special community in our state."

"This is the island," adds Jay Bostrom, a middle school teacher. "I spent a year in Helena, Montana and we tried to protest there, but the climate is extremely different. That's the capitol of the state, which is interesting because there is a pretty strong group of peace seekers in that area, but they stand alone and isolated. Standing on the corner with a sign there is a very different experience. At the last anti-war rally we had here, there were 1,000 people, whereas in Helena, there might be 50. Helena might be the second most progressive place in the state, which is not saying much."

While Montana is often referred to as a "red state," it has a much wider political spectrum than it gets credit for. Democratic Governor Brian Schweitzer won a closely watched, highly publicized race in November, making him the state's first Democratic governor since 1988. During that same election, 62 percent of Montana voters approved a medical marijuana initiative, the 11th state in the country -- and the ninth Western state -- to do so. The Schweitzer and medical marijuana victories came even as Montanans voted by wide margins to ban gay marriage and reelect George W. Bush for President.

The state's progressives are also proud of the fact that Jeannette Rankin, a Missoula, Montana native, was the first woman ever elected to Congress in 1916, four years before women nationwide won the right to vote. In 1917, Rankin joined a handful of representatives who voted against World War I, saying that the first time the first woman had a chance to say no against war she should say it." In 1941, Rankin was the only member of Congress to vote against World War II.

"Her (Rankin's) political integrity and voting record puts to shame the vast majority of congressmen and women today. She was immensely popular in this 'red state' despite her intractable anti-war and women's rights stances," says Bostrom. "Montana has nothing to be ashamed of politically. The seemingly incongruent and incoherent politics of this state are no worse than the unexplainable feat by the state of California to put Arnold in the Governor's office."

All of the people I interviewed at Saturday's rally are dedicated activists working for various causes both locally and internationally. Carel Schneider, 61, was at the rally representing Women in Black Missoula, a group she started on December 6, 2001. "After 2001, something was totally amiss in my whole energy field because of what we were doing. I had to stand up for what I believed in," she says. "I researched Women in Black, we started standing and we have been ever since."

Members of Women in Black Missoula stand on the town's visible bridge every Friday. "At first, we were called unpatriotic and un-American. When we went to war, people gave us the finger and yelled at us. There have been interims when they've honked in support, but we seem to be moving back into the hostile area," says Schneider. "I don't know why that's happening. It depends on the political arena. As long as we're there, they have to see us and we have to enter their heads. Somehow we're making a difference."

Just to let you guys know, even John Kerry had no trouble winning that area despite Bush's win in the state. Funny though that only Dukakis and Kerry in these past 20 years had ever crossed the 50% mark in that area. Clinton won that area but never crossed 50% and Gore got smashed there. After I saw the results of MT and SD from 1988 to 2004, I swear that given the closeness in 1988, those two states could have been made swing and potential more solid Democrat territory up north.

From uselectionatlas.org:

2004:

Kerry 51.4% 26,983
Bush 45.7% 23,989
Other 2.8% 1,482

2000:

Gore 37.0% 17,241
Bush 46.1% 21,474
Nader 15.0% 6,999
Other 1.9% 862

1996:

Clinton 49.3% 21,874
Dole 36.1% 16,034
Perot 12.6% 5,586
Other 2.0% 888

1992:

Clinton 47.0% 20,347
Bush 29.8% 12,898
Perot 22.5% 9,735
Other 0.7% 319

1988:

Dukakis 53.8% 19,178
Bush 44.8% 15,965
Other 1.5% 526

I find it fascinating that the "environmentalists" that joined those in D.C. over the weekend ALSO left a large mess on the Mall. And, so goes the "sincerity" angle of the whole affair.

The main reason that many "conservative" people don't show up to these rallies is that they have JOBS, families, and really DO "support the troops". While I can't say I've been "everywhere"...the following is generally true of those who say, "We support the Troops, not the War".

1. They themselves have never been IN the Military, nor would they EVER volunteer, let alone ASSOCIATE with those who are.

2. They'll show up to EVERY "anti-whatever" rally, but NEVER will you see them actually participate in any of the send off or welcome home events staged for our local Reservists or National Guardsmen.

3. Their "concern" is TOTALLY political in nature. If it were NOT, then where WERE they when Clinton said he'd "have the Troops back by Christmas..." and they're STILL there...??? In actuality, they support ANYTHING the UN does....but, can't see past their political bias here at home.

4. You'll NEVER catch them sending a "care package" to the Troops....NEVER find them sending a message of support....NEVER hear them reciting the Pledge of Allegiance....but,

They WILL donate, whine, chant, and parade to remove God from schools, abort INNOCENT fetuses, and save the three-legged newts or whatever species du jour will serve the purpose of eliminating access to Public Lands.

Check the INTELLECTUAL DISHONESTY METER...it pegs at those "concerned" rallies.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment about finding solutions and a positive message, rather than angry screams.

After reading a number of the "reasoned responses" from the LEFT....

I see that NONE of you have investigated Project SHAD/112 OR what I actually said.

The REASON you are squirming so is that I recognize the same sort of fervor driving your clearly juvenile fantasies as those brought about by the membership of the VVAW when John Effing Kerry was at the helm, circa 1972.

I HAD in fact survived being a HUMAN TEST RAT during Project SHAD...and had some misgivings....

HOWEVER, when I got wind [after attending precisely ONE "rally" protesting the mess that Vietnam had become by that time..and getting my photo in the Denver paper at the time] when I got wind that the "leadership" of the VVAW, while Kerry was at the helm, was planning to ASSASSINATE U.S. political figures to "make a point"...I readily BAILED....!!!

I didn't recognise that IDIOT's name [KERRY] until I read the VVAW connection.

Most ignorant Americans, like YOURSELF, refuse to see the TRUTH.

Not because they can't handle it...but, rather because it's not politically CONVENIENT.

I assure you I'm QUITE real...

Go to Google.com and insert THIS: "Project SHAD", J.B. Stone

I realize this is asking QUITE a bit...but,

GROW UP.

J.B. Stone is no doubt the type of conservative that echoes the kind of rightwing lies, spin, and propaganda that shows up from politicians like Bush and the conservatives and from rightwing media like Foxnews and Rush Limbaugh. J.B. Stone has gone through a few divorces and his fourth wife, not his last mind you, even visited Williston, ND where I'm from. Since he has no time to be part of the family because he's too busy defending the looney rightwing in his state even as Montana has had enough of Republican control, it should be no surprise that he can't keep faith in himself or with his family or what's left of it. And now because Rose was smart enough to point out that not all Montanans will stand for this rightwing nonsense, J.B. Stone cowardly tries to bash those who disagree with his favorite rightwing fascist(s) but finds himself drinking another bottle of vodka just to keep it going. Sorry Mr. Stone but you can't keep forcing people to accept your crap no matter how hard you try.

Cmon now... all you on the left have to admidt there is some truth to what JB Stone says.....YOu honestly do not see some of yourselves in his first statement? Really? I happen to think though that yeah he is a bit out there, but You have to admidt there are an awful lot of people that do fit into his assertions. I am not a huge fan of all that is going on, but Tell me what would happen if we were to pull out of Iraq today? We started the mess. We need to be there to iron out the power vaccum that exists there now.
I am not a huge fan of the current administration that is fully true, but I do respect the fact that there are those that do have the opinion that they are ok. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion no matter how f-ed up it is. You want respect and such from the right? Respect and actually LISTEN to them. HOW HARD IS IT TO DO THAT? When you are constantly yelling about this that and the other thing it almost seems as though you really are just concerned with the sound of your own voice. NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL WE REALLY LEARN TO WORK WITH EACH OTHER....This is advice I fully intend to give to the right as well. STOP THE BULLSHIT PLEASE.

NY is mostly republican

Upstate New York is mostly republican. Because there is such a large population in NY city the votes from the rest of the state don't count. This is the situation in several states. Maybe we should change the system to force the electoral college to caste votes by county. 1 vote per county or something like that. This might help a mend the problems we've be having.
