There Is No 'Noble Cause' For War

By Cindy Sheehan, TruthOut.org. Posted September 20, 2005.

Over 200 Iraqis have been killed this week alone. How much more blood are we going to allow them to spill before we demand an end to this war?

It has been one month, one week, and 4 days since I sat in a ditch in Crawford, Texas.

My request was very simple: I wanted to speak to the man who has sent over a million of our young people over to fight, kill, and die in a country that was absolutely no threat to the United States of America. I wanted to ask him: "What is the Noble Cause that you keep talking about?"

Well, we all know now that George Bush never came down the road to talk to me. Thank God! Many people have been saying that I am the "spark," "catalyst," "face of the anti-war movement," etc. I beg to differ.

George Bush and his arrogant advisers are the spark that lit the prairie fire of peace activism that has swept over America and the entire world. If he had met with me that fateful day in August it would not have been good for him (because I knew he was going to lie and I would have advertised that fact) but it would have had less of an impact on the peace movement if he had.

Upon reflection on the events of this past August, I have come up with two reasons why George could not meet with me: He is a coward, and there is no Noble Cause. If George had as much courage and integrity in his entire body as Casey had in his pinky, he would have met with me. But, ironically, if George had that much courage and integrity he never would have preemptively invaded a practically defenseless country. His syncophantic cabinet and hangers-on are also incontrovertible evidence that he is a coward. No one had better dare disagree with him. How dare a mom from Vacaville, California, have the nerve to contradict the emperor of Prairie Chapel Road!!??

All of the "Noble Cause" reasons that George has variously given for the invasion and continued illegal occupation of a sovereign nation are also patently false and ridiculous. He has been claiming recently (since he admitted a long time ago that Iraq had no WMDs or links to 9/11) that this occupation of Iraq is spreading "freedom and democracy" in the Middle East.

Really? Does he have any idea that the constitution that the Iraqi governing body is working on is based on Sharia and that it undermines the freedoms of women? Does he realize that for over 50 years women had equal rights with men in Iraq? Does George realize (of course he does) that the puppet government the US put in place in Iraq is comprised of the very same people who encouraged the invasion to line their own pockets? What kind of freedom and democracy is this?

If George is so hell bent on freedom and democracy for Iraq, then why doesn't he practice it here in America? Up to 62 percent of Americans believe that what George has done in Iraq is a mistake and we should begin to bring our troops home. Well, George, 62 percent is a clear majority and you should begin to listen to the people who pay your salary.

He has also claimed that what we are doing in Iraq is "making America safer." Another statement that is easier to disprove than the "freedom and democracy" baloney. To disprove this little bit of deception, all we have to do is look at the Gulf States. Ask the people of New Orleans, especially, if they feel safer. By misappropriating all of our personnel, equipment and pouring billions of dollars into the sands of Iraq, George has made our country more vulnerable to attack by outside forces.

Also, from the cold and callous statements of people like Michael Chertoff and George's own mama, the people of New Orleans seem to be "acceptable" collateral damage to the ruling elite of this country. It is my humble opinion that the only thing that will make America safer is to get George and his unfeeling and dangerously incompetent supporters out of our White House.

We all now know the reason that we are in Iraq. George told us so from a break he was taking from Crawford in San Diego on the same day that Katrina was hitting the Gulf States: it is for oil. It is so George, Dick, and their evil buddies can rape more profits from our children's flesh and blood.

This is not a Noble Cause -- as a matter of fact, it is the most ignoble cause for any war that has ever been waged. We as Americans knew either in the front of our brains, or in the back of our consciousness, that this war was to feed the corporations. 15 brave young Americans have been killed so far this month while our attention has been focused, and rightfully so, on the Gulf States. Over 200 innocent and unfortunate Iraqis have been killed in this week alone. How much more blood are we as Americans going to allow George, Congress, and the corporations to spill before we demand an end to this war and an accounting for the lives that have been needlessly ruined?

It is also time to stop hemorrhaging money in Iraq. I witnessed the abject poverty and sense of abandoment the less fortunate people of New Orleans were living in even before the levees broke. It is time to start pumping hope back into our own communities. It is time to start taking care of Americans. How many millions of our tax dollars are we going to allow George, Congress and the corporations to misuse and waste in Iraq?

Not one more drop of blood. Not one more life. Not one more penny for killing.

If you love our country and want to see a change for the better, come to DC on the 24th of this month and stand up and be counted for peace. The entire world is counting on you.

Most people think that our involvement in Iraq was caused by powerful corporations. Why then do we continue to permit corporations to control our government with campaign contributions? The cause and effect are clearly evident. The first step toward lasting peace is to take control of our government. Join the revolution

Thank you from the bottom of the hearts of Oppressed Americans all over this country. The "little guys" may not mean much to the rich men and corporations who started this war for profit, but I am forever grateful that you have the strength and time to dedicate to helping regular Americans like me, a single dad with two daughters. I do what I can, but I couldnt take the time to quit my job to make a constant stand such as you and others are doing. I salute you. Americans like you are what make this country great.

1. "Does George realize (of course he does) that the puppet government the US put in place in Iraq is comprised of the very same people who encouraged the invasion to line their own pockets?" Who the hell is she talking about? Is Jalal Talabani a corporate goon? Are there members of parliament who financially benefited from the overthrow of Sadam? That seems a bit unlikely.

2. "Also, from the cold and callous statements of people like Michael Chertoff and George's own mama, the people of New Orleans seem to be "acceptable" collateral damage to the ruling elite of this country". Okay, this is misleading. By putting the word "acceptable" in quotations she's making it look like Chertoff or Barbara Bush actually used that word when describing the deaths in LA, which they never did. In fact, given the huge aid package just approved by congress, it seems like the President and his supporters consider these deaths anything but acceptable.

3. "We all now know the reason that we are in Iraq. George told us so from a break he was taking from Crawford in San Diego on the same day that Katrina was hitting the Gulf States: it is for oil. It is so George, Dick, and their evil buddies can rape more profits from our children's flesh and blood." Okay, we've all heard this a million times. Is there any evidence (that doesn't come from Michael Moore) that this is true? For God's sake, oil prices have gone up steadily since the invasion.

4. "Not one more drop of blood. Not one more life. Not one more penny for killing" This is a question for anyone toting the "immediate withdrawal" mantra: What do you think is going to happen if the american military immediately pulls out? Coalition troops, while certainly undermanned, are the police . As bad is it is there right now, things will get much, much worse without them: there aren't nearly enough iraq security forces to keep the peace between the rival factions if we leave. That means increased bloodshed is an inevitable result of your thinking. So, if you're really so concerned with the preservation of life, the last thing you should be doing is advocating a policy that will necessarily result on the lose of more life.

Noble This !!

The consept of a 'Noble War' went out the window with the Crusades. Since that time wars have always been fought for the same reasons.....Greed and Plunder. If a person has even a 'passing' intrest in history you'll see that warfare has been a constant in the last 5,000 years of human history. When the last great Glaicers receeded 12,000 years ago,People began the stories of a 'Angry God',so wars were waged to get at other folks foods and goods of exchange and somehow appease this angry god. Since then every war was
'Ordained' by God. It was God's will that the Native Americans
were genocidally afflicted up until the 1970's. It was Gods will that we build weapons of mass destruction, and use them. God has sent us to Iraq. God's in the White House. To bad the Anti-Christ is sitting at the desk. If you think wars can be 'Noble Causes',check yourself, because you drank the Kool-aide.

There is no war in IRaq !

Lets remember that we won the war in IRaq a long time ago, by taking over the presidential palaces, toppling the statue, and taking custody of Sadam. What exists now is "resistance to the extremism violence"

Most of that would go away if the US left Iraq. The only reason they stay is to give protection to the multi national corporations, and enforce American diplomacy.
Train the soldiers, recruit them, and let them fight their own war now that it is a fair fight.

The war is over, we won... now get out

Cindy, my thoughts are with you on your plight to hear the truth about the loss of you son. I would not know that I would be so brave in your shoes - thank you from this mother at least.

I wish I could be there in DC but alas I cannot due to the fact that I have been largely unemployed since Bush took office and have not the means to travel there.

Mothers - speak out for your children because no one else will. They will take them and use them for their own means and toss them aside when done if you are not careful.

Peace and Love to all who will be there.

P.S. Anyone know of candlelight vigils to support those in DC on the 24th?

Why is it so hard to make the numb public understand that it has been lied to and deceived repeatedly by the Cheney Gang (W is just a puppet). Why is it so hard to expose them? I guess if you bully the corrupt corporate media hard enough, you can get away with murder. I think Dick Cheney is evil. He has a cold snake-like look. I am not surprised if a forked tongue comes flicking out of that face. He knows he got their blood all over his hands. There is no "noble cause" in dropping cluster bombs, napalm, and shells with depleted uranium on other human beings. It is anything but noble. How about EVIL!!!

Extreme times we are mothering in.

Mothers
I am considering bringing my 4 year old daughter. This would be her first protest. We will have to travel in a car pool. I wanted to post this because this is a hard decision to make. If any young single mothers out there have brought their young daughters to protests on their own, let me know. I would be interested to hear what your experience was. It would help me make my decision. Thanks.

Hey Cindy, I got news for you….. The 200 Iraqi’s that were
killed this week were not killed by the U.S. Military…. They were killed by the terrorists that we are trying to stop.
The car bombs at the markets or places of worship, the
suicide bombers at places of employment….yeah…..those are the terrorists… not George Bush, the Congress or the U.S.
Military … IT WAS THE TERRORISTS.
What I am trying to say is, not everything is black and
white. We need to look at ALL sides of the issue before
starting to point fingers.
Cindy, I understand the emotions that you are going
through…..I experience the pain everyday; the thought of
losing my son forever does not get any easier.
What I am asking you to do is this, think about what your son
believed in, would he agree with what you are doing?
Are you fighting for what you believe in or what you think HE
believed in?
State your facts, not your emotions.
I admire the fact that you fight for what you believe in, but
you better know what you believe in before you start the fight.

Respectfully, A Gold Star Father

I thought personl insults were forbiden on this blog. There are many good reasons why the President should not have met with you. First, you met with the President once and had your chance to discuss any issue that you felt strongly about. Second; It s quite obvious why your views have suddenly swerved so sharply to the left. Within the course of a month you have morphed from a patriotic proud greeving mother to a radical, vindictive, hateful mouthpiece of the anti-war movement. What changed? Follow the money.

The radicalization of Islam has been going on for 50 years. This war was as ineviable as the sun rise. Its not a war against the US its against all of the free, democratic, non-muslim world. The sooner the Arab world and the rest of the free worlds realize this the better.

We are not fighting for oil. We are fighting for a stable world. A world where I can practice my religion and teach my children the truth. Open your eyes.

Points of disagreement:

1. You speak of meeting with the president of the United States as such an easy appointment to come by. In ur words it was a "Simple Request", who are you to ask for an appointment with such a prestigious man; then insult him by calling hime a coward for not meeting with you. I am sorry to inform you that he has much better things to attend to.

2. Second of all you say that Iraq was absolutely no threat to the United States, yet again im sorry to tell you this but any country that deals with terrorists and has biological and chemical weapons is a threat to the United States.

3. I do you agree with your opinions about George Bush's reasons to justify the invasion of Iraq, they were completely unwarranted. We should of invaded Iraq in the sole purpose of protecting the Kurds. During the 80s Suddam
ordered the murder of 100,000 Kurds. Do you not think that this was reason enough for an invasion.

4. You talk about a withdrawl from Iraq starting very soon. You must take in account that a hasty withdrawl will be taken as a weekness possessed by the United States, and many more soldiers would die. For example, more U.S. soldiers were killed in the withdrawl from Vietnam then during the actual war itself.

I could go on and on about your article that i found absolutely sickening, but I believe i have said enough. This will probably get deleted because liberals do not like to look at the truthe they are much to optimistic and like to base their opinions on assumptions rather then facts. I am not a Bush backer, but i believe that the Americans should stick by their leader through both good and bad decisions.

Remember? It was BEFORE you saw dollar signs and you were content with the meeting! Before you began supporting the terrorists who murdered your son and thousands of other innocent people. The same terrorists who will murder the entire U.S. population, as well as others, unless we finish what we started in Iraq and Afghanistan. You certainly don't see suicide bombers in the U.S.

You've had 2 years of fame .... Why don't you allow Casey to finally rest in peace with the honor and dignity he deserves? Go be a part of your 3 OTHER CHILDREN'S lives ~ just a thought!
