Is the End Near for the Right-Wing's Vice Grip on U.S. Israeli Policy?
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest World headlines via email.
This week, retired Marine Corps Gen. Jim Jones, Barack Obama's national security adviser, will keynote the inaugural J Street Conference, billed as a gathering of "progressive pro-Israel, pro-peace" activists.
The event marks the emergence of the moderate Jewish advocacy group that aspires to be a counterweight to the voices of the traditionally hawkish "pro-Israel" lobby in Washington.
The White House's decision last week to send Jones to address the event was a small move that might have a significant impact on the overheated politics of the Middle East.
In the months before, a full-throated "swift boat" campaign had been launched against J Street in an attempt to vilify and delegitimize the group as belonging to the fringe, despite its advocacy of a moderate, or at most slightly left-of center, approach to U.S. policy in the Middle East.
The conservative media offered a steady drumbeat of dubious charges, and a campaign had been under way to warn members of Congress away from the event. And it appeared to be having some impact as several members of Congress pulled out of the conference in the weeks leading up to the event (a total of 10 reportedly dropped out, according to reports, but not all in response to outside pressure).
It was an attempt to nip J Street in the bud and preserve the hegemony established lobbying groups like American Israel Public Affairs Committee have long enjoyed in the halls of Congress.
At stake was not only the definition of what it means to be "pro-Israel" -- long synonymous with supporting the more hawkish end of Israel's political spectrum (despite American Jews' general tendency to lean left) -- but also, and more importantly, the ability of established lobbying groups to claim to speak for the American Jewish community as a whole.
It was a closely watched Washington fight, and when the White House announced that the head of Obama's National Security Council would headline the event, it sent a powerful message, legitimizing the 2-year-old group as a voice in U.S. foreign policy debates and providing cover for wavering lawmakers under pressure to skip the conference.
It signaled, to the media and other interested observers, that the J Street conference is decidedly within the mainstream.
It was also another small shot at the hawkish Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- a public rebuke of Israeli ambassador Michael Oren's high-profile decision to boycott the conference a week earlier -- a decision that may have been prompted by pressure from AIPAC (Israel said it had concerns for some of the group's positions but would send an "observer").
Indeed, the Washington Post framed the entire controversy surrounding the conference as a proxy war in a larger conflict between the White House and the Israeli government under right-wing Netanyahu.
In sending Jones, not only did the Obama administration help J Street take the old-school "Israel lobby's" best punches and come through standing on its feet, it did itself a service in the process.
Obama has long been dogged by warnings that he risks losing support among American Jews for a range of policies -- from attempts to reach out to the Islamic world, to negotiating with Iran and, perhaps most significantly, for confronting the Israeli government on the expansion of Israeli settlements.
His administration is leaning on a new generation of moderate-to-progressive Jewish activists, represented most visibly at the moment by J Street, to provide political cover for him in turn.

1. Whether a robust "public option" is adopted by Congress. If so, the road will be open to a more just social order in the US, eventually ending the dominance of big finance and big corporations in favour of real democracy.
2. Whether the US forces Israel genuinely to stop settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. If so the road will be open to an Israel Palestine settlement, the sine qua non for defusing the hatreds that give us Al Qaeda and Co and the whole deplorable "clash of civiliations)
We in Europe, who should be supporting Obama but lack a voice in the world, are watching in hope, but appalled by the extraordinary opposition this president is meeting even from those who elected him.

If the political state of Israel ever had the balls to tell its own citizens the truth, let alone others they'd have absolutely no clue where to begin.
Israel is so soul sick from its secrets and encrusted w/so many years of denial Freud himself couldn't cut it w/a chainsaw.
The fact that this pathology of deceit has infected America is so evident, so diabolic and ultimately so unnecessarily selfish - and that my friend either requires a catharsis or our little 60 year affair will come to blows.
Tragically it NEVER had to get like this, but for Israel, more is never enough.

I give the credit to Hillary, Obama's one good appointment.
Since the O-holes are sure to blame Hillary when Obama goes down in flames, I thought it well to give some credit where it's due for a change. :)
I wonder if the Bamantor will try appointing another Democrat to something--just to see what happens. Probably not. Glenn Beck might demur.

I just don’t think that occupation is the means for the Palestinians fight. I think it’s used as a veil to mask the real reasons for advocating the suicide of your own children.
It’s more of a war of Islam against Jews, not of occupation.
There has to come a point, when Palestinian leaders realize that they can’t defeat Israel, and conceding is the only answer to any future. In a sane society, that is what would happen. In a society that raises children to become suicide martyrs, it’s clear that it’s more about religion than occupation.
The children that are killed by Israeli shells are called martyrs, and Arabs weep. The children that become suicide bombers are called martyrs, and Arabs celebrate.
I don’t get it.

Interesting. This seems pretty un-American of these Jews. White Europeans overspread the north American continent, expropriating American Indians and the Mexicans. Americans are proud of their history. Perhaps American-Jews are not proud. White European interlopers - unlike the Israel's Jews - had no historic connection to this land and yet they did not blink an eye; in fact they strongly supported the expansion of the settlement movement, the buiding of outposts / forts on Indian lands and the further displacement and the ethnic cleansing of the American Indian. Again, Americans are proud of their history of conquest. What are American Jews thinking?
Joshua wrote: "56 percent believe that military action that kills Palestinian civilians -- even if it targets terrorists -- actually creates more terrorism instead of preventing terrorism," and while a majority supported Israel's "right" to launch last year's attack on the Gaza Strip, 60 percent of respondents said the campaign had either done nothing to enhance Israel's security or had in fact made the country less safe."
Should we not call this chutzpah to the extreme? How dare American Jews lecture Israel's Jews about security from the safety and the security of America! How dare you.

Why is it that any criticism of Israeli boorish behavior is considered anti-semitic, and yet the Palestinians who are being forcibly removed from lands they have lived on for years, and killed by the thousands is something that isn't talked about?! I wonder how many Americans being forcibly removed from their homes and lands would react under those conditions? And while "people" may complain, the fact is that Hamas was democratically voted into office by the Palestinian people! That "Hamas" was not the group of people that Israel wanted to deal with, is not legitimate enough for them to not even recognize that they are the leaders that the Palestinians wanted! I mean in 2004 the rest of the world was stunned and didn't want to deal with GWB in office again, especially after the previous 4 years of disaster, but the world didn't completely stop dealing with the United States!
It is past time that both Israel & both Hamas & Fatah reach a peace settlement. Yes it will be necessary for the President to bring force to bear on all parties! And yes the Israeli's must go back to the 1967 borders, and stop encroaching on Palestinian land. If Israel continues to throw obstacles to the peace process, then maybe the US should reconsider reducing the $10 million per day that they receive from US!

Obama uses the old verbiage calling it terrorism when when Palestinians fight, even though they're rounded up in an apartheid shooting gallery and even humanitarian groups can barely help through Israel's iron blockade. He never uses the term terrorism when Israel murders, and did help right wing groups sabotage the Dubin II conference on racism. He implies threat when he mentiones Iran, even though they have the same human right of self determination as other countries, and they are being held to a higher standard while he ignores the nuclear threat to them from Israel.
He ignores the racist beginning of the Afghanistan war, where we refused the rule of law and a country offering to turn over bin Laden if we would hand over evidence.
It may not be right wing by your definition, but it's a shallow one if you're just asking if democrats will put a nicer face on racist exploitation. We still, in our "credible MSM", have never admitted we've even fought one war for oil, and we're still enriching multinational corporations watered in blood. "Credible" media can't even ask the ridiculous question if global resources and profiteering enrichment has anything to do with the murder of so many, though it has through much of history and now is no different, including self-righteous lies we tell ourselves. By my definition, having democrats do it, pretty it up with better rhetoric, and get more people to support it by supporting them doesn't help the world any.

You mean, you don't know that all Jews ARE NOT Zionists and not ALL Zionists are Jews?
You mean, you think Zionism is identical with Judaism and Messianic Christianity, and you think ALL Conservatives are Zionists--even Constitutionalists who stand for Rule of Common and Natural [over coercive] Law?
Do you not know that Judaism is not a Semitic Religion; it's a political ideology?
Do you not know that "standing for governance BY CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED" is what Judaism was selected to DO--not stand for slavery and exploitation?
Do you think that the behavior of so-called "Ysrael" [which is nation operating as a Parliamentary Democracy] is absolutely opposed to governance by personal law-abiding consent?
I don't think you know very much about Judaism, natural Law, Constitutional governance or Hegelian Dialectics, which your article TITLE PROFFERS as its logic.

Ever wonder why Arab and other non democratic governments demonize Israel--maybe to distract from their authoritarian and fear based societies. Why Israel has been the most attacked nation ever in the United Nations by the very nations that have the worse human rights records.
J Street may applaud a settlement freeze even it it rewards Palestinians while they still incite hatred and threaten a 3rd intifada. J Street may have forgotten that Israel offered 96% of the territories to Arafat including a capital in east Jerusalem in 2000 and was rewarded with the 2nd Intifida. Israel unilaterally withdrew from Lebanon and got His- bol -allah, a war in 2006 and today 40,000 rockets ready to go. Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and got Hamas and 8,000 rockets, and war in 2009.
The Israel government was dumb enough to do this withdrawal thing two times without a peace partner but seems finally to recognize a pattern here, dah, withdraw from the west bank area and that 9 mile wasteline between the sea and the west bank with get blasted..
Maybe the folks involved in AIPAC recognize this isn't so simple and
pressuring Israel is dangerous until there is a viable peace partner ready to end the conflict forever. . Unfortunately, no current leadership in the arab world today will take the risks necessary to secure a better life for the Palestinian people and peace if not possible. Maybe J Street can focus on fighting Israel bashing, educate the world on the strong human rights record of Israel compared to any western nation, and maybe J Street can try to develop a new generation of Arab leadership willing to lead--so Israel will benefit by any future concessions.

Honestly!
