Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize: Now He Must Earn It

I woke up, read the New York Times website and thought I had come to The Onion instead. I hit refresh. Still there: "Obama Wins Nobel for Diplomacy." Maybe this is one of my weird work-related dreams, I thought. Maybe I am still drunk from last night's party. Better close my eyes and wake up again in the real world. Five minutes later ... and still no dice.
Yes, Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize. My first reaction is that this is going to be a test of how much crazier Orly Taitz and the Republican Anti-Christers can get. Not only does this prove that Obama is a socialist svengali -- because he got the Norwegians to vote for him, probably as part of some UN-takeover of America -- it also proves that Obama is piggy. Anti-Christs are so like that; they want everything right now (and losing the 2016 Olympics was just a red herring).
But back in reality, I'm still a little bewildered. It's as if the Nobel Committee gave Obama the award for behaving like a normal American president, instead of like a clueless corrupt cowboy.
The Committee insists this is not an aspirational prize, no carrot to make the United States and its president better neighbors. Thobjorn Jagland, the former prime minister of Norway who chaired this year's committee, insists that it's for work the president has already accomplished, for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
"We are not awarding the prize for what may happen in the future, but for what he has done in the previous year," Jagland said. The announcement, which takes special note of Obama's anti-nukes position, says that Obama has "created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play...thanks to Obama's initiative, the United States is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened."
These Nobel sentiments, however, are aspirational in my view. Obama doesn't deserve the prize, yet.
Yes, the president has said he wants a world free of nuclear weapons, but as Jonathan Schell wrote in our pages, he has a long way to go before that vision becomes reality. That path must include the U.S. Senate ratifying the comprehensive test ban treaty, and even a full court press from the White House can't guarantee that will happen this fall.
Then there's the matter of Obama's multilateralism and partnering with the UN. As Naomi Klein pointed out, the Obama administration, like its predecessor, boycotted the UN Durban anti-racism conference, using the flap over language on Israel-Palestine as an excuse to duck the actual issues about racial justice the conference cautiously raised. As for climate change, Obama has yet to commit to attending the December climate change conference in Copenhagen, and if that jaunt to Denmark is going to succeed in reducing carbon emissions, the US will have to bring a lot more to the table than it is currently offering.
I could go on: fully closing Gitmo and restoring civil liberties and compliance with the Geneva Conventions; negotiating with Iran in good faith; withdrawing from Iraq and, of course, withdrawal from Afghanistan. Escalation, or even maintaining the status quo there, would alone discredit this award in history's eyes.
Obama got a nice vote of confidence from the Norwegians for his promises. But now, he has to actually earn the Nobel with his deeds. That will be hard to do if his administration continues to send such mixed signals on international cooperation and diplomacy.

but Obama IS lobbying in Ottawa to bamboozle, drop massive funds & ensure the Canadians continue to suffer & die in Afghanistan...
while destroying Canadian social public infrastructure for PRIVATIZATION. Most Americans don't realize that Canada got suckered into *doing all the heavy lifting (aka, dirty work) for AmeriKKKa in Afghanistan's Helmand Province for the last 8 years...
not many people notice that in Michael Moore's latest film, the "Plutocracy report also mentions that CANADA is ripe for the fucking picking for American hegemony.
*gag*
But its nice to know that the US Politicians can wrangle another Peace Prize for SWEET FUCK ALL

I'm with Tariq Ali about others being more worthy of this award now. Perhaps in a year Mr. Obama will have actually earned this award. But there are still the issues of bombing Pakistan, surging Afghanistan and let us not forget Iraq. Until these issues have been resolved, I just can't see why he's getting this particular award. (Talk isn't the same as action.)

President Obama has done more in his short time--even during his campaigning--to make the change from saber rattling to diplomacy than any other politician in our history. That alone is the work of peace, and that alone deserves the Nobel recognition.
Bravo and congratulations, Mr. President!
Talk about hecklers like Jim DeMint and Joe Wilson, the crude ones from the gang of crude ones from S. Carolina, this is more of the non-stop, ugly ideological garbage from the Right that is now tormented with jealousy and resentment--all predictable--because their people have for so long done the opposite of anything to earn consideration for any peace award. I suppose they think that Bush/Cheney should have been awarded the Nobel for lying us into Iraq!

Obama has done a great deal to promote world peace by fostering rapproachment with countries that the G W Bush administration alienated, has convinced some countries to return to control of nuclear weapons, has carefully considered our choices in Afghanistan, as controversial as that situation is, has conferred with MidEast countries attempting to foster peace in that troubled and incendiary part of the world, and has concentrated on global initiatives since the beginning of the few months he had held the office.
It is odd that he is criticized by the media and others for "trying to do too much", while also criticized for not having not done enough. His actions have not been merely the customary duties of an American president; he has gone far beyong that. But it seems that he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
Criticism and dismissal by some quarters in the U. S. media and the Republicans, who speak out of mere spite, reeks of calumny, nit picking, and mere carping.
He's got the prize and he deserves it as much as anyone has in the past. Americans should appreciate the honor he has received, and the positive effects it will engender throughout the world.

How it works: the plug-in hybrid
Thanks largely to the market leading Toyota Prius we're all by now quite accustomed to hybrid cars and most of us probably know to one extent or another how they work. Well, the latest step on our path towards electric cars (or however we'll eventually achieve eco-friendly personal transport) is the plug-in hybrid.
Would you miss Ronaldo?
So would you miss them? Would, in your opinion, the tournament be reduced by their absence? Or are you so one-eyed in your affection for England the fewer obstacles in their way the better? The fact is, if things do not go their way over the next few days, there is a very real chance the World Cup will kick off next June without the participation of the two finest current protagonists in the world game

Desmond Tutu got the award for fighting apartheid, which went on for another ten years.
Tenzin Gyatso got the award for working for human rights in Tibet, which still has problems.
Aung San Suu Kyi got the award for her work in Burma; last time I looked, the place was still calling itself Myanmar.
Sadat & Begin and Arafat & Rabin got the award for working for peace in the Middle East.
Need I say more?

* Give hope to an entire nation in a time of deep darkness that it can rise beyond cycles of self-destruction and aspire to higher goals
* Lead that nation back from the brink of self-destruction and insanity to one of health and self-determination
* Shine a ray of light and put hope into the heart of millions of people whose lives have moved increasingly towards despair and darkness in recent times
* Bring together disparate groups of people not just in his own country but around the entire world and call on them to unite together to fulfill larger, common dreams that we all share
Are these small, insignificant things?
Have the critics forgotten the darkness and how bright and important that hope is that has shone into the lives of millions?
Have they forgotten the awe-inspiring speeches that Barack Obama gave even back when he was not the favored candidate, and the path that eventually led him to being elected President of the United States?
Have they forgotten that it was Barack Obama who said "I am running to do more than end a war in Iraq. I am running to change the mindset that got us into war." ?
